Yes, this is Fark where we love covering coverage of excessive coverage because Drew is a news addict and nobody is willing to stage an intervention.

Yeah, it was farcical. BBC1 & BBC 2 were simulcasting the same stuff for most of the day, then mixed it up a little with different hagiographies. BBC Scotland simulcasts BBC1 most of the time, but also got in on the action. BBC Alba is the Gaelic language channel, and I think it was broadcasting, but wall-to-wall Phillip. Didn't check if it was even in Gaelic. And BBC4, which is usually music documentaries and old Top of the Pops (but not those episodes) didn't even broadcast last night. Every TV news bulletin was all about it, and I don't think the BBC Scotland news even covered anything else but him in Scotland.

I guess the same held true for BBC Radio, but I only listen to the radio in the car, but Radio 2 and 6 Music were simulcasting Phillip at about 1500 yesterday.

I get why it's kinda important news, but there's no need to cancel all broadcasting and put the exact same programming on all channels. Take over BBC 1 and have half-hourly news updates on the BBC News channel to confirm he's still deid, same for Radio 4. But they've got plenty bandwidth, they could have shifted normal programming to a different channel and still had non-stop obituaries and hagiographies.

Radio 1 was kind of interesting with a few hours of "tasteful" instrumental versions of pop songs and no DJs.

cheap_thoughts: Pretty sure Mountbatten is German

Battenburg is German, changed to Mountbatten in WW1.   His mother Alice was born at Windsor castle.   She is also a "Righteous Among the Nations".

Phillip was also whatever the Russian royal family was.

His father's family were part of the Danish royal family, one of them got the be King of Greece (because apparently when Greece was looking for a king there were no Greek men available?),  They had had enough of the Bavarian one, and the Brits turned down the Greek request for one of their princes. So a 17 y/o Dane was elected to be king.

They do the same thing here when important people die, like when Bush and RGB died.

Here's a 6 hour live feed of a casket sitting in the capitol while we talk about the same things over and over again!
Then it gets really exciting when they switch to the live feed from a helicopter showing motorcades meandering around the streets of Washington at 10 mph.

Every station on cable TV was showing news. Except MTV where they instead ironically played music videos.

The way I found out about 9/11 was on MTV.  I fell asleep watching/listening to some MTV music channel.   Woke up to the towers falling and I was thinking to myself "That's a farked-up video".  It took a couple of seconds to realize what was happening.

Sure, but of all the broadcasters in the UK, every BBC channel was devoted to the same thing, often multicasting the same program on their different channels. Channel 4 switched back to a fairly normal schedule later in the evening, E4 and More 4 weren't affected. ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 ran as usual. Unless his zombie corpse has risen demanding brains, there's no cause for it to pre-empt the programming for every BBC channel.

That's also quite a bit more of an important event than the death of a guy who's almost 100.

No, it was MTV.   Not saying they carried it all day, but in the early morning on the west coast, they were broadcasting the towers falling.

What did they think would happen?  When they announced he was stepping back from his royal duties, they put the entire planet on alert hours before the announcement, and we thought either he or the Queen had died.  That's the protocol.

Long ago & far away: When President Kennedy died, the 3 US channels broadcast virtually the same programs & views, some from a common feed. I was 7. It lasted a week (8 days?). But, the shocking assassination of a youthful president is not the same as the expected death of an antiquated prince. He isn't as beloved as the late Queen Mother.

I wonder (but haven't seen) about the coverage in his ancestral Greece, Denmark & former petty principalities 8n Germany. Prince Phillip is descended from every dynastic family in Europe. I wonder if every place is looking for some tie to the local ruined castle or tourist Schloss? Are flags in Denmark at Half-Staff?

He did serve in the Royal Navy while his sister's were married to Nazis, something I always found interesting: I not only doubt I'd've gotten my Clearance if I had such family connections, I'd've probably found myself packing up for a prolonged stay at a "resort" for the duration of the War.

It really is a thing that there is no such thing as "news" unless there is a LOT of bad news.  Any time you see a story that is good news, it gets shuffled aside as a fluff piece on a slow news day.

From everything I have seen most people he talked to thought he was very down to Earth and the "foot in mouth" problem was mostly what regular Brits would view as good natured taking the piss out of each other. But for the Prince-consort they were considered gaffes.

He certainly had his faults but he did his duty for his adoptive country. Including putting himself in has way to kill fascists.

He will get a ton of coverage as the consort to the Queen, but also this is probably being seen as a bit of a trial run for the real deal when Elizabeth II passes away.

It was the 80s.  Neoliberalism, baby.  I just read something about that.  Neoliberalism is the belief that we don't need government supervision, we're all the masters of the universe, and the world order will be sorted out by our purchases.   No need to intervene in anything, we'll decide what is important by popularity.

WHOA.  See what that does?  No personal responsibility, no worries about the environment (which doesn't really even exist in this scheme), no Libby guilt about poor people or equality or you being a farking pig--nope, the market will decide, and the market is always right.

Then add a trillion dollars a year in marketing and advertising, just in case we forget our allegiance and start acting like normal human beings again, and you've bought your way to way cool neoliberal freedom, and I can piss off, since I have no respect for any of it.  But you have a trillion dollars in advertising to back you up.

And just look at how well it's worked.  You all just LOVE the market, right?  It sorts everything out, and you knew that guy wasn't worth a fark anyway--he doesn't have any money!

And that's why everything we see is trash now.  It gets worse all the time.  I'm not paying for it.  But somebody is.  Must be somebody who believes that helping create a lot of garbage is an honorable way to live.

Any volunteers?  Because you're all over Fark.

His job, accomplished donkeys ago, was to stand at stud for the Monarchy & provide the requisite "Heir & Spare." After that, he was technically surplus to needs. (Nice work if you can get it, eh?) There are more princes from mediatized dynastic houses (the "Royal Stud Farms of Europe") than available positions to (ahem) "fill." Now, the expectation is the Heir will find a wife from among the subjects to promote Nationalism & Patriotism: no foreigners. Starting with the late Queen Mother from Scotland, & then withth Diana & Katherine, the House of Windsor became more "English" each generation & less German.

My mother had a long-time subscription to Time magazine when I was young.  Also National Geographic.

One day I came home from college (It was about 1980)  and my mother had her latest issue of Time in her hand, and besides all the little subscription cards falling out if the magazine, she was ripping all the full-page ads out.  She was saying, what is this?  What's with all these ads?  Why is half the magazine ads now?  That was new.

And she let her subscription lapse, and National Geographic followed later.  Then she moved back to the U.P., where she came from, and she never had another magazine subscription again.

There's a lesson in there, but you don't get it.

I have a theory that when someone dies, Fark likes to focus on the negative as much as possible to skip out on mourning as much as possible. It really fits in with the "people who are cynical, comedic assholes to avoid getting emotionally hurt" mould that seems to fit the majority of Farkers.
