Wow!  Who would have thought that getting bashed in the head for the entertainment of the masses would make your brain want you to do stupid things?

The articles I've read all say that he shot himself. None said where the bullet went in.

I had a car accident and was in the hospital for months.
One Saturday morning my orthopedic guy came in, sat down on the chair in my room and was in tears.

I asked him what was going on.

He'd been there all night, trying to put kids back together who'd been injured playing football--for fun.

He said, "I just put a fifteen-year-old kid back together and he will not be in pain for the rest of his life."

"If your kids ever want to play football, bring them over here and I'll give them a tour of the wing and tell them why it is the stupidest idea ever."

I did.
None of my kids EVER played football.

We do. But the NFL and the rest of the multi-billion dollar football industry would like the public to be kept in the dark about how bad it is.
They'd like everyone to keep believing the comforting lies about safety gear and doctors monitoring player's health.
Every time you watch a football game, you're watching players damage their brains, repeatedly, for your entertainment.
You could be watching an alcoholic downing shot after shot, poisoning his brain, or watching someone eat lead paint chips - the effect would be roughly the same.
You're watching a group of young men, who have been lied to about what's happening to them, destroy their brains (and in many cases, their bodies) because you find it fun.
They banned watching people in mental hospitals, because it was harmful and dehumanising to the patients.
Freakshows are banned for the same reason.
Now we have full-contact sports (and reality TV).
What a wonderful world we live in, where we can watch people die for our entertainment, slowly, and tell ourselves it's ok.

2021-04-10 6:57:18 AM
There seems to be some real lack of speculation in the stories I've heard so far.

But it looks to me like this guy had some serious mental issues brought on by trauma from his playing days.  He blamed the doctor who was supposed to help him, and in doing so, shot him and anyone else that was nearby.

Does that about sum it up?

In sufficient control not to kill anyone - that we know of - for five years after his playing cereer ended, then killing five people at one house. But hey, he was a football star so he must have an excuse.

I recall one NFL player shot himself in the heart to leave his brain intact so they could see if it showed what made him depressed and suicidal.

Rugby puts about one UK schoolboy per year in a wheelchair for life and seriously injures many more. If it wasn't perceived as a posh sport for posh people[*], it would not be tolerated, but the upper classes like to toughen up their children.

I wouldn't expect a killer to have a social conscience, but Dave Duerson of the 1985 Super Bowl winning Chicago Bears shot himself in the chest that his brain was preserved for study.

It's the entertainment industry colliding with the safety paradox writ large. The more people think doing something is safe, the more risks they'll take and the more damage they'll do. You can shield against the easily visible damage, but the deeper hits still add up. But money talks, so...

It's so weird that such claims are political. I mean, of course at this stage no one can make any definitive claims about a crime that just happened.

What we do know is that quite a few players have murdered themselves while suffering from CTE. And that Belcher and Hernandez had it. It should at lead us to ask some questions, as 'liberals' or whatever understand that not all events are completely monocausal (i.e., the claim "CTE may possibly aggravate the violent tendencies of some people with psychotic tendencies" should not be confused with the claim "CTE definitely turns people into murderers, the end").

"While we know there are no answers that will satisfy the question 'why,' we are sure of one thing: we do not grieve as those without hope. Our hope is found in the promise of Jesus Christ, and we are enveloped by peace that surpasses all understanding," the statement said.

Do the families of victims honestly, sincerely mean it when they make statements like that? Each time the death of a family member gets publicized, it always seems they make a peaceful statement, as if they have no desire for revenge against the mothafocka who murdered/raped/violated their family member. Maybe they're just pretending to be peaceful, but deep inside, they really want the focker to burn in hell in the most horrible way.

A previous linked article mentioned it. I got the impression this was his doctor for a long time. Maybe even in childhood.

ABC reported it as "There is some word that he was once a patient of this doctor".

But I only heard it during that one initial broadcast.

Like I mentioned in a different sports thread, the only way to confirm CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy) is to conduct tests on the brain tissue after the person in question has died.

"Think of the old cliché about "the mind being an excellent servant but a terrible master."
This, like many clichés, so lame and unexciting on the surface, actually expresses a great and terrible truth. It is not the least bit coincidental that adults who commit suicide with firearms almost always shoot themselves in: the head. They shoot the terrible master."

My football injuries sustained over 11 seasons (pop Warner through high school):

Broken fingers (all)
Broken hands (both)
Broken wrists (both)
Broken collar bone
Broken ribs
Hyperextended elbow (farking ow)
Multiple concussions (wild card because nobody cared in the 80s and 90s)

Longer term
Arthritis in spine, shoulders, neck, hands, fingers
Sciatica
Unknowns (why I had to skip large sections of this article because I can't bring myself to read it)

My son will not have football as an option. I couldn't care less if that makes me unpopular for a few years.

Spesking from your comprehensive knowledge of the progression of his personality and behavior in the years leading up to this?  Surely you wouldn't emphasize the piece of shiat angle to minimize the possibility of a contribution from exogeneous brain trauma.  That would be disingenuous.

A person can have a suppressed tendency for a behavior that then gets triggered by something else.  Do you focus just on the tendency or the triggering element?

I had an acquaintance in college who was a hard-hitting football star. Very nice guy, very sharp, clever, funny. He went on to a career in the NFL and then as a big time assistant coach - getting jobs much ahead of his years. He wound up shooting himself after an armed standoff with police (he lived). I don't have connections to him any more to find out how he is doing.

But CTE sucks.

CTE does suck and I've heard other stories of significant personality changes. Most are like Jim McMahon and suffer without lashing out, but there have been way too many suicides to just dismiss the effects of CTE.
