Honest question:  What is wrong with requiring an ID to vote?

I need an ID for:

Driving
Seeeing a movie
Entering a bar
Flying on an airplane
Buying alcohol
Entering the military
Applying for a job
Going to a Dr's appointment
Getting a prescription
Renting a car
Checking in to a hotel
Etc.  Etc.  Etc.

Why wouldn't you require an ID for participating in this country's  most sacred activity, voting?

Oh yeah, that's right,, disingenuine "concern" for those you think are too incompetent  to procure an ID.

Racist hypocrites, the lot of you.

Nothing.

As long as it's an ID, and not what YOU WANT to be an ID.

In states that require an ID, a Driver's license, or a lease agreement, or a birth certificate, a passport, military ID, current college ID, all of these can serve as ID. If that's okay with you, then we're done here and we can go about our business.

If what you want is a special, state approved, NEW type of ID, then we have to keep arguing.

It's a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. In-person voter fraud, the only kind that can be caught through a Boter-ID system is SO RARE that it hardly ever happens.

Meanwhile, for actual numbers of people who are disenfranchised by Voter ID, a study was done on voters in Indiana after the 2006 election. Link to study (pdf)

Even among the people who voted on 2006, only 85.9% of people who voted had an ID that exactly matched their voter registration. 14.1% of the population did not. (They had a phone line though, and were able to respond to a telephone survey. Go figure)

Anyway, this has a disparate impact on the poor, the very young voters (18-35), very old (70+), minorities, lower income (<40K), etc.

If you're OK in stopping 14.1% of voters from voting to go after a practically non-existent issue, that says more about you.

(For 2006, that would be 14.1% of 2.05 million people who voted in Indiana (or roughly 295K people) who can't vote because of a non-problem.)

Despite voting being (almost) the only right, from the perspective of the person who can't start a job, drive, book a hotel room, rent a car, get a loan, buying a gun, join a gym, register a car, buy alcohol/medical marijuana, etc. etc., not being able to cast a ballot every 730 days is certainly the least impactful aspect of not having an ID they experience in life. It's also the only thing that Democrat politicians benefit from their being able to do so instead of focusing on getting everyone an ID so they can claw their way out of the underclass and participate in normal society, they pretend it's racist to expect people to show ID to vote. And idiots stumbling around in a fog groping for something to be outraged about eat it right up without any consideration for the bigger picture. It's amazing.

Dammit. If you are requiring it then YOU make sure everyone gets it to give them access to their constitutional right. And deliver it to the citizens, for free, and without making them travel to acquire that requirement. Anything less is a poll tax.

This. The fact that Georgia can effectively throw out the votes of the people to get the result they want in indefensible. The people pretending this is about voter ID are obvious liars. We know they are liars, they know they are liars. Let's get rid of the pretense and admit that Democrats wants to govern but Republicans want someone to rule them. They hate the will of the people and are trying to circumvent it.

ID is required.

Get a new schtick.

This is one of those things that, in theory, and to the average voter that doesn't pay a huge amount of attention, seems fine. "Who doesn't have an ID? Why would someone be against that?"

But they don't look at any of the nuance behind it. The reality is that once the ID is required, you can control who can vote by controlling what IDs are accepted and how easy it is to get said IDs.

College students vote for Democrats? Don't accept that photo ID - even if from a state institution. People with guns vote Republican? Accept a gun card. Close down the places (like DMVs) closest to those demographics you don't want voting, making it difficult or nearly impossible to obtain it (John Oliver did a story on this and pointed out one area in I think Wisconsin where Republicans change the local DMV such that it was only open on the 5th Wednesday of the month - and only a few months of the year even have a 5th Wednesday). They can make getting said ID require documentation that's hard to get, or has a fee to obtain, or (selectively) refuse to grant it for minor technical errors that shouldn't invalidate anything.

It baffles me that the law isn't that if a state wants to require an ID, then it must be incumbent on the state to make said ID 1. free (and not "Free if you jump through a large number of hoops to prove to our satisfaction you can't pay." Free period) and 2. Easy to obtain. That means the state has to go through the expense of getting documentation, of opening up extra offices and *staffing them*, of reaching out to every potential voter to try and get them said ID, etc.

Sadly, our current stacked court system essentially operates under a "You can enact blatantly racist laws with clear disparate impact based on race - that you, your opponents, and the courts know are all based on racist intent - as long as you can 'claim' there was some non-racist fig-leaf reason to enact them."

The courts do this wink wink "It's super unfortunate that the negative impact of this is largely on Black people, but it was enacted as a cost-saving measure in large populated areas, and the whole racist thing is just an oh shucky darn unfortunate impact." Infuriating.

They've made obtaining identification incredibly difficult for people that don't own real property or have bank accounts, neither of which are required by the Constitution and all of which require significant expenditures to obtain.  If you have to spend money to get something from the government, it's a tax, regardless of whether or not it is labeled such or if that tax is laundered through a private entity like a utility company or financial institution, neither of which have any business being in the business of identity verification.

According to PBS and the Washington Post since 2000 they found only 44 verifiable cases of attempted "voter fraud", as in someone showing up to the polls with the purpose of impersonating someone else to vote. The majority of those were people voting republican.

That's 44 cases out of over a billion votes over 20 years, or a rate of 0.0000044%
Chances of being struck by lightning in the US in a lifetime: 1 in 500,000, or 0.0002%

Seeeing a movie
Entering a bar
Flying on an airplane
Buying alcohol
Entering the military
Applying for a job
Going to a Dr's appointment
Getting a prescription
Renting a car
Checking in to a hotel
Etc.  Etc.  Etc.

Why wouldn't you require an ID for participating in this country's  most sacred activity, voting?

Oh yeah, that's right,, disingenuine "concern" for those you think are too incompetent  to procure an ID.

Racist hypocrites, the lot of you.

These things I do regularly without and ID:

Seeeing a movie(sic)
Entering a bar
Buying alcohol
Applying for a job
Getting a prescription

These things, when I was poor I never did, so your privilege is showing:

Driving
Flying on an airplane
Going to a Dr's appointment
Renting a car
Checking in to a hotel

This one is just silly:

Entering the military

The fact that you think all of these things require an ID or are all necessary parts of everyone's lives shows that you are profoundly ignorant and no one should give a goddamn what you have to say about this topic.

8 inches: Why wouldn't you require an ID for participating in this country's  most sacred activity, voting?

You don't lose free speech because you don't have a passport on you.  The government can't quarter soldiers in your home if you don't have a driver's license.  Police don't get to perform illegal searches and seizures if you don't have an ID.  If I want to keep arms in my home, I don't have to have a state ID in my pocket.

Your access to the basic rights of a citizen don't stop because you don't have state papers on you. End of story.

There's an easy solution to this, of course.  Automatic national voter registration at age 18.  No location restrictions, no state eligibility requirements, no re-registering to keep yourself on roles or updating where you move.  But the GOP hates that too, for obvious reasons.  They don't want people to vote.  The architects of Voter ID laws and the various bills presented now have OPENLY ADMITTED THIS.  It's 100% about voter suppression. And they're not even clever about it.
