This is the problem with conservative humor; they need to beat a joke to death in order for their viewers to understand that it was supposed to be funny.
All they had to do is superimpose Brian Williams next to the Ingenuity choppa and it could've been funny.

Yeah conservative humor has three parts.
1. The joke
2. Telling people its funny
3. Telling people why its funny.

Also any conservative skit humor is like an SNL skit that ran 9 minutes too long.

Conservatives are never funny. They engage in tone deaf, mean spirited gut punches, are never timely or hip. They were the guys in college who were way too serious and fanatical about their beliefs while everyone else said, "it's a party, shut up."

It's part of the reason why they're conservatives.

Political humor isn't about slandering those you dislike, it's about exposing wrongdoing. Conservatives can't do political humor because for any wrongdoer on the left, there is at least one wrongdoer on the right doing something similar yet far worse which conservatives refuse to acknowledge. Until they are willing to hold their own to the same standards they want others to follow, they can't do political humor.

All good comedy writing has a common element: creating or acknowledging a tension and then releasing that tension. The tension can take many forms such as raising a taboo subject or pointing out an uncomfortable situation. The important thing is there needs to be an underlying truth or universally shared experience at the heart of it. When realized or exposed it snaps that tension because the audience collectively understands the feeling of nervousness, angst, shame, or whatever other feelings, are common to the human experience and not worth worrying about. We're relieved to let go of those feelings.  A really good laugh is most often a shared realization which has a self-deprecating nature, to some degree, at its core.

Watch Big Bang Theorywithout a laugh track and it's just awkward people being mean to each other. Seinfeld without a laugh track (essentially Curb Your Enthusiasm) is still funny because of shared angst that everyone understands.

Conservative humor, like this show, either tries to get its laughs through cheap shot insults or by trying to artificially create shared experiences and universal truths that don't really exist. And even when they do hit on a shared belief held in the collective of the conservative unconscious, it's rooted in prejudice, anger, or hate. People don't want to let those feelings go as readily as angst or embarrassment. They aren't getting exposed to something which snaps the tension, but instead reinforces it. And without a laugh track to signal it's supposed to be humor, the conservative audience won't laugh at all-- because they'll actually think they're being informed. And we understand that to be the premise of the rest of Fox News: reinforcing those feelings of anger and hate.

It is not just beating a joke to death. That is the endpoint of their failure but not the beginning.

Look at Jon Stewart, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver and other successful political satirists. They almost always begin their segments or commentary with actual clips taken from the news. They then find a means of deriving humor from the clip itself. By contrast, Conservative attempts at political satire -- not just here but also in past efforts like the 1/2 Hour News Hour -- start with little more than a strawman. The Brian Williams "joke" was not just dated, it was without context to set it up. The CNN "spoof" did not refer to any specific exchange that occurred on the network; it was just presenting what conservatives like to broadly generalize happens on the channel.

Even SNL's Weekend Update, which is less commentary and more just straight up humor, starts its jokes with actual headlines. Colin Jost savagely attacked Matt Gaetz on the last SNL but all of his barbs were derived from real, specific, news headlines. What was the faux-CNN "You are racist" tirade supposed to reference, exactly?

Not white-knighting Dennis Miller here...

He'll fire off a half dozen of these obscure references, but the people who get the reference sometimes piss themselves laughing.

So you'll half the crowd politely laughing at his rant, and the other half is near someone who has pissed themselves laughing, making it look that he's funny overall.

But in reality, only a small minority laughs at each of his jokes...

I appreciated Dennis Miller's acerbic nature on 80s SNL 'Weekend Updates'.....but when he tried his live quips about Pliny and s*** on MNF, it was a total bomb - not the bomb. A bomb.

I think this is a big one. The Daily Show, for example, will make fun of anyone in/near the news, liberal leaders included, and a lot of what they make fun of is the newsmedia itself.

I'm starting to think there's a whole list of reasons why conservative humor shows always fail:

-That
-A lack of empathy needed for humor to work
-A lack of creativity needed for writing humor
-The racist stuff that they really want to do wouldn't be acceptable on TV
-Reality not conforming to their worldview enough, forcing them to write shiatty strawman parodies
-Being stuck in the past, forcing them to rarely be topical. See: The Brian Williams joke.
-Punching down just isn't as funny as punching up.

Conservatives can be funny.  Rick Wilson is funny, PJ O'Rourke is funny.

One of my comedian friends is a hard core Trumper and she's funny, I chose to book her on one of my shows.

Her style isn't sticking it to the libs, she makes fun of herself as an entitled Jewish American Princess, and yes it's funny.

The problem is comedy with an agenda, because when you put the agenda first, the comedy suffers.

John Stewart is a comedian who happens to be liberal.  Gutfield is a conservative trying to be funny.

The reason conservative humor doesn't work is because the goal of conservative humor isn't to make people laugh over something funny, it's to make people feel like they are clever and superior so they can smuggly smirk about it.

Actual smart comedy can be a commentary on political issues and poke fun at those *seemingly* below, but always adds an element of self-deprecation in order to show that the person making the joke isn't above the people they are poking at.

There's a reason Bill Barr can make comedy about post-modern feminism and cancel culture and other post-modern movements, because he always adds in the element that he's quite simply too dumb to "get it" beyond the perceived problems with it and adds in that those movements are correct despite their glaring problems.

There are good conservative comedians, Jeff Foxworthy is (or at least was) a good example of that. Though I would make the argument that he was a key player in making red-neck culture something to be proud of and something conservatives should aspire to... Bill Engvall is another genuinely funny conservative comedian. I laughed really hard at one of his latest Netflix shows, especially the story about him buying and taking weed for the first time. Even though weed has been legal in CA for over a decade, his story about going to a dispensory for medical MJ is hilarious because it clearly comes from a "Just Say No"/DARE conservative stance on drugs mindset while slowly coming to terms with the legality of weed and it's status in modern society.

But the key to being actually funny isn't about being cleverly insulting, it's about being relatable in some way. George Carlin used to tear the shiat out of both political parties while at the same time pointing out things that we all have in common. Yes, it's obvious when Carlin was on a soapbox and you could nod your head along when he says something intelligent that aligns with your point of view on things, and ignore him when he spoke against your side of things, but when he was truly being laugh out loud funny was when he was making us all connected. Talking about Bush and the first gulf war might have made you smile and nod your head, but you didn't start laughing until he started pointing out that guns and bullets were all shaped like dicks because the absurdity of war is all dick waving and everyone knows it.

Mad Canadian: whither_apophis: Just wait until they drag out Dennis Miller

"Grandpa Joe Biden negotiating with Putin will be as effective as when Emperor Dasharatha tried to subdue the Virasena the Gandharan"

It's like how a majority of Americans opposed the ACA (Obamacare) but about half opposed it because they wanted Medicare for all.

Fireproof: Bf+: Humorists care most about constructing a joke.  "Conservative Humorists" care only about the message.  The joke comes second, if at all.

Semi-addition:

-Too often uses the non-punchline of "the strawman lib got owned"/"the libs would be so mad if they ever saw this" even though most of us would just kind of shrug.

Groupon boob job: Conservative humor, like this show, either tries to get its laughs through cheap shot insults or by trying to artificially create shared experiences and universal truths that don't really exist. And even when they do hit on a shared belief held in the collective of the conservative unconscious, it's rooted in prejudice, anger, or hate.

So, the tension is from indirectly encountering the idea that out-groups in society might be people too, and the tension is released by assuring the viewer that those out-groups are merely scum?

They've actually figured out that they shouldn't say overtly racist things.  They've graduated on to mocking white people who object to racist language.  Sexism and homophobia are still OK, though.

John Stewart is a comedian who happens to be liberal.  Gutfield is a conservative trying to be funny.

I think you summed it up better than any of us ever could.

At least then they'd be honest about it.

I heard some fine specimen of the White True American Patriot Race complaining about cancel culture and political correctness a few months ago (I was stuck in line behind them at a gas station), and one of his friends said "You're just pissed they won't let you say (N-word) anymore".

Brockie himself wasn't conservative, he was quite left-leaning but he figured, hey, publicity is publicity! He was on Red Eye a LOT so I had to watch a bunch of interviews with him (elsewhere) before I realized he was a pro not a con. He kept his jokes surreal and not political.

Dave wrote about doing an entire segment with his balls hanging out because they wouldn't let him bring the Cuttlefish of Cthulhu on set.

So if a conservative comedy news show is nothing more than adding a laugh track to an otherwise normal conservative news show, why aren't they just doing that? This couldn't have been very expensive, but there's no way it was cheaper than splicing together a Fox News greatest hits reel with some canned laughs between clips.

Uggh, I could pull a better late night comedy show out of my a...  Hey Hey, kids!  Wasn't that great!

The safe dad jokes between this poor fellow and his fellow propaganda ministers was mildly amusing but so what?

The boycott clip's description of CEO's was actually a pretty good description of the former president.  If this was a veiled attempt to take a shot at him, good work.  But I kinda doubt that's the case.

And Brian Williams?  Really?  Saving the Benghazi material for sweeps week or something?
