Yeah, there is nothing more dangerous on the road than a tire or wheel that gets loose and starts going places on its own

Must have been a white wall tire.

I ran a tire shop for 20 years and this was my biggest fear, i used to tell the crew that it wasn't the fear of being fired for a "wheel off" but the fear that their mistake could kill someone. it was the one area of the job that we never joked about

A coworker of mine had his front left fall off. I drove past him moments after it happened. That tire traveled at least a quarter mile on its own... across a street with a median, two curbs and slightly uphill through brush and small trees before finally coming to rest. Luckily that is all that was in the path of the wayward tire.

When his car was struck by a front tire that flew off a Toyota Tundra, the California Highway Patrol reported. The tire hit the roof and windshield of McKee's Volvo S40. He suffered head injuries and died at the scene.

The driver of the Tundra wasn't hurt.

If responsible tire owners would spay/neuter their tires, we wouldn't have this epidemic of stray tires causing mayhem.

Never over torque lug nuts. Always retorque lugs after 100km anytime the nuts have been loosened.
Check your wheels and tires often.

Back in the eighties, I was walking to the liquor store.  I was almost done there when I heard a thud and this car tire kneecapped me from behind.

I got up and started walking again.  That liquor store wasn't going to walk to me.

Why do they always feel the need to mention the profession if the person is some type of first responder?  They don't tell us the profession of anyone else.  I just don't see the relevance if the person is not killed or injured while on the job.

My car was damaged twice by loose wheels. Once on the freeway, once in a parking lot. In both cases, it was entire wheels, including a piece of the axle, that came off of a trailer. Big and heavy.

In the parking lot incident, I got so see a surveillance camera footage. This wheel rolled 3/4 mile down a hill, and when it came into frame it was at least 20 feet off the ground. It hit a wall and then bounced off of my car, then it was spinning like a top in the parking lot for like 20 seconds. People were out there smoking, they could have been killed.

How can you NOT be injured when you're driving at hwy speeds and your front tire entirely comes off?   Wouldn't the Tundra have rolled at the very least?

I saw one like it a number of years ago. It didn't roll but spun around the axle as it ground into the pavement. It got hot enough to catch the brake fluid and the vehicle burnt to the ground.

Water hoses... how quaint. I tell ya if a mound of tires like that ever gets rolling just sit back and watch it burn cause you're not gonna put it out. The landfill here way back in the day has a tire mound catch and even after using bulldozers to cover them they were still on fire for days.
Tire rubber basically turns into a mix between kerosene and gasoline once it starts melting.

Nothing?  What about a giant electricity monster with hammers for hands, bashing and lightening-ing every car that comes within twenty yards of it.  I bet that's more dangerous.

I was in Little Rock for business once and I picked up a rental car.  Another rental customer and I left the rental place at the same time and got on the same highway.  After about a 1/4 mile his left front tire came off at about 60mph and started bouncing.  It managed to bounce on our side of the highway 3 times, over the median, and twice on the other side before it and went into the woods.  Luckily it didn't hit any cars and no accidents occurred because both sides were busy at the time.  He managed to get the car onto the shoulder and I gave him a ride back to the rental place.  He joked that he was glad he got the insurance while we were driving back.

Rim shot...

2021-03-31 9:37:22 AM
Was driving back to college with my roommate in his VW, another friend in the back, and my roomie's back strapped to the back.  We were about 25 miles from the college when we felt two big wobbles, and then the left rear tire came off, rim and all.  We were skidding on the brake drum, putting up a huge shower of sparks.

The tire passed us, made it over the left lane, then the median, then the two opposite lanes.  Traffic was pretty light, thankfully.

A large castellated nut, held in place by a cotter pin, is all that holds the rim on the axle.  The cotter pin had rusted away, allowing the nut to come off.  The brake drum was ground down about an inch, and both wheels of the bicycle managed to hit the ground, causing them to bend.

Could have been worse.  The Beetle was pretty heavily loaded, and losing a front vs a rear wheel would have been bad.

"After striking McKee's car, the tire bounced and was struck by another car. The driver got out but minutes later, he was struck by his own car after another vehicle rear-ended it, CHP Sgt. Jason Lopez told the Daily News."

Considering that icy roads are never a factor, L.A.'s reputation really is deserved.
