Maybe they can use some of that sweet Sony money to upgrade it a bit.

Sounds like it hasn't improved then.  Tried it for a week, never again.

With the lack of classics on Netflix and Amazon, I've actually started grabbing them on Blu-ray whenever they're on sale.

This was inevitable.  Back in the early 2000s, every anime publisher overextended themselves and licensed pretty much everything. Then nearly every one of those publishers went under or had to scale down drastically.  I'm not surprised that most of the distribution is now consolidated under one company that can afford to just run it as a small side hustle.

I'm looking forward to Anime Monopoly.  Because every time I play, I scream for a good 30 minutes. At least this way I can power up.

/Boardwalk with a hotel?. How much will that cost me? Over 9000?? AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

It would be a real tragedy if anime got monopolized because then it will all look the same and feature endlessly redundant storylines.

I know you're being sarcastic, but this is only about distribution, not production.

Yes and yes. Sarcasm aside, though, I feel like any bottleneck between creator and consumer usually results in a narrower gamut of product. I'm basing this partly on having seen the 90's comic distributor wars up close.

I thought when the old geezer died (thank you for bringing Robotech here now please move) we'd have movement on Shadow Chronicles 2, remakes, whatever...but no...nothing.

Now you have things like Nozomi Entertainment throwing everything up on youtube, or RetroCrush which is full of older content.

Harmony Gold is owned/controlled/embezzled from by the Agrama family. And they sold the Robotech franchise a year or so ago to Funimation. After Tatsunoko refused to re-up their licensing contract in 2020 and basically ran the SDF-1 over them multiple times in the renewed court case vs. FASA/HBS over the Unseen Mechs in Battletech, a couple years ago.

First, they didn't lose the license (dammit!): https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/the-robotechmacross-license-has-been-extended-exclusive/

And Funimation got the streaming rights from Harmony Gold once all their other deals expired (aka they don't own it, they can just stream/VOD it): https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/robotech-finds-new-home-at-funimation/

But don't let facts ruin a good posting...

Hadn't seen that. Mostly, I've been following the legal saga from the Battletech side (ironically enough). But, that article does clarify some things, like Harmony Gold agreeing that Big West owns character/mech designs; Harmony Gold licensed through Tatsunoko while FASA licensed through Big West.

Honestly, the who mess could be a full semester class in either business or law or both. Plus, it still keeps us from getting Macross legally here in the U.S. Luckily, I am not above other means to watch it.

Is it just currently that Macross can't be acquired legally? I remember buying subtitled DVDs from The Right Stuf back in the day.

I haven't tried retrocrush yet, maybe I will take a look later today. Looking at Crunchyroll and FUNimation however I am increasingly sad and I have no Outlet to watch anime from my youth.

This is not an onion on my belt statement, I fully accept that I am no longer the Target demographic for new releases. I am just disappointed that it is so difficult for me to find older titles to watch. I burned for the FUNimation catalog in about two or three weeks tops. Crunchyroll has nothing for me as it is almost entirely the new stuff that does not hold my interest at all.

@rummonkey - Between Retrocrush and, dare I say it, Hidive, you will likely find a pretty wide variety of "classic" stuff.  Depends on when "from my youth" was...

Both sites are shiat for usability, but manageable.  Ad blockers work on Retrocrush (I subscribed), can't speak to Hidive (subscribed there too)

There was a short period in the 90's where Harmony Gold kind of "took their eye off the ball" so to speak about Macross and a couple of things got released (Macross II, which was produced by Big West and Macross Plus, which is the current main timeline from Studio Nue). But because of the changes in mech designs, use of new characters, etc it most likely wasn't worth suing over and would have just mudded the waters even further. However, after that brief window, the rest of the series (7, Zero, Frontier & Delta) ended up back in "Don't even think about it" land as far as anyone getting a U.S. license for them.
