I would consider Kirk a male role model, when I was growing up Gen Z. It's funny that he is just as neurotic as I am.

You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME! I mean, how old are you people? What have you done with yourselves? You, you must be almost 30... have you ever kissed a girl?

I watched some Star Trek when it first came out in the 60s, but I didn't watch a lot of TV by then. When our daughter was small, the movie with the ear bug was on TV one morning while we were getting ready to take her to daycare and ourselves to work. It scared the shiat out of her. The End. I don't think Star Trek familiarity is all that widespread.

I dunno, acting is weird, and I get the sense that since the actor knows whats going on in the actors head during a scene to watch it back is basically an invitation to identify everything you did wrong all of the time.  Even if everyone else says its great, you're just sitting there obsessing over the fact that it could've been better and now will never be.

I've been to two Star Trek convention, one had William Shatner and the other had Jonathan Frakes. Shatner mostly talked about his days at McGill university, Frakes mostly talked about Star Trek.

Back then I attributed the two different styles to Shatner being tired of Star Trek but I felt he should not agree to participate in ST conventions if that was the case.

He's 90! He looks fantastic for pushing the century Mark and he's still riding horses and doing sitcoms. I want to be that active in my extreme old age!

Live to 120 In perfect health Bill Shatner, then may the greet bird of the galaxy fly you out into the cosmos.

Maybe, but probably not. More than a few actors really can't stand to watch themselves perform. I'm sure he saw some dailies from back in the day, but I believe him despite his being a huge ham.

Trik: OtherLittleGuy: He's lying or trolling.

Yeah, I don't believe him.

I believe him. Because if there is one thing i have noticed in his persona, he's not really into or very good at laughing at himself. Takes himself just a little too seriously to be able to look upon himself in a critical way without it upsetting him too much i figure.

consider it like this:
If he had been going back to review his own work, like how many professionals do to take toes and refine their performance. Then i'd be fairly sure over the 3 seasons of the show we would have likely be able to notice that.

One time when he was over-growing his girdle, the producers slapped together a dailies reel of as many unflattering fat-shots as they could find to shame him into going on a diet.  I can believe he never watched the show after that.

/he's also (nearly) on record as not watching TNG because his ego couldn't stand a Star Trek where he wasn't the captain

I'll bet she remembers that.  Either way, you have a specific moment you remember and can talk about.  That's widespread enough, I think.

Lots of shows are in the public consciousness.  I know I have never seen a SEINFELD or FRIENDS, but I know enough about them to describe them to people.  Other shows are completely forgotten by people.  Ever hear of CORONADO 9 or JOHNNY MIDNIGHT?  Those were 1960s shows that nobody knows.

Somehow, I don't believe him when he says he never saw an episode. By all accounts, he has an ego as big as the Mutara Nebula. I see him pulling up an episode, smiling and saying to himself: "Damn I was good."

or

He doesn't watch because he cannot stand to see the faults in his performance that everyone else might miss, which is a pretty common among actors.

I'm watching TOS on Prime and he's not wrong.  He's a terrible actor, he must be very easy for producers and directors to work with, he's had so many shows.

Star Trek, TJ Hooker, Rescue 911, Boston Legal.  I'm sure I'm missing something.

He's obviously had facial work done, it looks like his face still moves and he doesn't look anywhere near 90.

For the record, he is a very well trained stage actor. That doesn't necessarily translate to TV actor, but he isn't strictly a terrible actor. He definitely wasn't great in Star Trek TOS, but that doesn't make him a bad actor.

l remember Shatner being interviewed once by Howard Stern and being asked about Boston Legal. "...other than James Spader can you name another actor you worked with on the show?" Shatner laughed... still couldn't come up with an answer.

I'd believe that he never watched any Star Trek.

It shows in his direction of the Star Trek movies.

He only knew the scenes he was in, so had no farking idea how to direct most of the films.

Part of what happened with Star Trek is that they kept doing rewrites right up until filming, so Shat's head would be filled with a dozen different versions of the scene.  His trademark pauses....andsuddenrushes were him trying to remember what the fark he was supposed to say, and then trying to save the take.
