As far as gameplay goes you either get money or lose money the descriptions don't matter at all.

If you want to bend Monopoly to serve the cause of social justice, you need to do more than change a few cards.

The object of the game is to personally profit by sinking your neighbors into crushing poverty.

IIRC, I never played it where someone actually won by wiping everyone out....we would just call it quits and whoever had the most assets won.

The person who declined to buy it may also participate in the auction. It's not just the other players. It's a good way, if your opponents are cash-poor, to either force them to mortgage things to raise money, or for you to buy it on the cheap.

(It's not a great game, but it also isn't that long a game as long as it's played by the rules as written, and people are actually willing to make reasonably equitable trades).

The original version was The Land Lord's Game which had two sets of rules: one was playing collectively and everyone came out ahead, the other was basically what Monopoly is now and everyone lost.

When I lived in the UK, I learned that basically everyone else in the Commonwealth - AUS, NZ, SA, and a lot of Canadians - had grown up playing the UK version of Monopoly, with London place names, and thought of it as a UK game. I had significant difficulties convincing them that it was a US creation.

If you want play realistically, select one player at random and give them all of the properties and all of the money. Everyone else gets $1.

This rule is important to make the game fun, if you ask me.  I wish that you could call open auctions of your own property any time you wanted.  And that you can't do reserve auctions. You can orchestrate deals between multiple parties but not auctions.
I also find the rule that there is a limited number of houses frustrating when people who are not the same skill level are playing... the people with more experience will buy up all the houses and prevent them from developing on their land.

Also the best Monopoly games are when you have 5 or more people playing.

fzumrk: If you want play realistically, select one player at random and give them all of the properties and all of the money. Everyone else gets $1.

One of my professors used this as a great teaching tool.
For one class, we played monopoly. 4 players started with 4 turns. Then they quit, and 4 more people drew a number at random, and took over for those 4 players. This went on through the whole class.
At the end, 1 player had most of the money, another player had a bit, and the other 2 were barely hanging on.
The professor then used this as an analogy for generational wealth, income inequality, etc.
Basically to debunk the "hard work gets you ahead, and people who are rich probably worked hard for it", because by round 4, the wealth wasn't going anywhere, and if the poor players messed up, they lose, but if the rich player messed up, he might be down a bit for a turn, but then his advantages naturally earned that loss back.

/the hard one that pissed off the one conservative kid in class: "now, imagine that at the very beginning of this game, only white people are allowed to play, and the 2 black players in class have to come in on turn 20 of 24, with 1/4 of the starting money, and most of the property is already bought. See now how racism is baked into the system at this point?"

Makes the game go a lot faster this way as well.  Personally I hate Monopoly as people try and drag the game on way to long.  It shouldn't take you a minute to decide if you are buying or not.  Your turn should be no longer than 15 sec from start to finish.

my uncle and i would play double-board Monopoly. if you landed on go, you could switch over to the second board (and vice versa). the second board was "Las Vegas", where all the rents are doubled and you could build anything on any property you owned.

I've found that the only version of Monopoly that is fun is a computer version.  Playing that game with other humans does not qualify as fun in any way.
