By total coincidence I happened to watch the first Star Trek sketch SNL ever did last night. It's funny to me how Shatner himself would go on to host SNL so memorably, one of only a handful of hosts in 50 years that has been quoted and mentioned so extensively. I know he's got a bad reputation for his personality, but still...  he's Captain Kirk. Come on. If it wasn't for that role and what he brought to it, who knows if TOS would have made it to three seasons?

He is and will always be James T Kirk, Captain of the Enterprise.

Most of the very few in entertainment who can claim to have been such inspirations to generations were right there with him on the set.

Spock was everyone's favorite character, and Leonard Nimoy a better actor. Shatner's ego could never get over that.

The one time Shatner carried the day in Star Trek was "Voyage Home." Light-hearted comedy he could do well.

He's coming to Steel City Con (in Pittsburgh) this June.

I'd love to meet him but you're looking at like $200 for the opportunity!  Too much!

Meanwhile THIS guy ("two fighters against a star destroyer?") will carry your bags to your car for you!

Better director too. "Holy Matrimony" notwithstanding

Had Jeffrey Hunter stayed on I think it would've been just as good.  At least we'd get 'sabotage' pronounced properly :)

Glad this has been covered. Boston Legal was great fun and Shat fully embodied that role.

He's hosting "The UnXplained" on History Channel these days.  He does *not* look 90.  Happy Birthday, Captain!

He and George Takei both have great DNA.  Their minds are sharp and they appear healthy.

If you want a ridiculous comedy with Shatner, Eddie Murphy, and Robert De Niro, look no further than Showtime.

His latest show UnXplained is actually quite cool.  It's the latest in a long line of "In Search Of" type shows about esoteric things (and some a bit more grounded, like what makes a serial murderer.)

It would fall into the category of just another fringe documentary show, except for how perfect the hosting and narration by Shatner is.

Hey may be an asshole, but he is an international treasure.

I liked the one last season about the unusual buildings around the world.  The story of the Winchester House was really interesting (and strange)

If you're going to start it... at least finish it.  Even if it's 10 minutes later like a Shatner monologue.

That whole album is actually pretty good. Sure, it's different, but that's kind of the point of music, right?

But 'Common People' is absolutely awesome!

To this day one of my go to scenes to just throw on TV is the end spaceship duel from Wrath of Khan. All the acting was great in those final minutes and the effects still hold up. I don't think the overall stillness and quiet of that battle has been duplicated.

And then the music as the Enterprise rises up behind the Defiant.

If Wrath of Khan was newly released in the last decade there'd be tons of YouTube videos of people losing their minds cheering in the theater for that one moment.
