I don't get the whole lock down thing.  I mean the science and the experts tell us wear masks and stay 6 feet apart and as long as your not within 6 feet of somebody for more than 15 minutes it doesn't even count as being a "contact" of somebody.

I can't think of a single business that can't operate under those scientifically proven, expert recommended methods to prevent spread of the virus.

So why are lock downs needed?

They're just as dumb. They're not as loud, so they don't often get as much notice. It's down to the American belief that everyone has a God-given right to speak up and be heard, no matter how ignorant or hateful their views may be.

You have to give people some kind of socializing with mitigations, or they'll make their own, and won't give a fark about mitigations.

You can have businesses with distancing, taking names for contact tracing, setting up outdoor dining spaces, etc., or you can have underground parties and speakeasies. It's been a year, and all the goodwill of "just bear down for a few weeks" or "a few months" is gone.  The greater part of the population has run out of farks to give. Let off steam or blow up the boiler.

Nope, not in an ideal world and if you allowed a business to kick the ass of anyone who entered their (private)  property who didn't follow the rules it would only take a couple examples to get the antimaskers in line. Personally I think the free market will self-regulate as long as they respect protected demographics and refusing to wear a mask doesn't fit that requirement.

I don't know why everyone is so upset about being asked to stay home unless you really need to go to the grocery store or pharmacy.  This past year has been awesome for me working from home.  I haven't gotten sick once.  Not a cold.  Not a flu.  Nothing.   I always get my yearly flu shot but inevitably, because I work around people that have kids that go to school, I'll wind up catching something.  Not this past year.  This has been fantastic!  I hope when this is all over I can keep working from home.

Because some of us aren't introverted homebodies.

I've been doing a lot of hiking, biking, and kayaking and using the parks. They have been open and we've been encouraged to use them. Getting exercise and vitamin D from the sub had been shown to reduce the spread of Covid. It also helps keep weight down and obesity is a risk for Covid and a bunch of other health problems.

You know what's dumb? We've been told to wash our hands frequently. You know what's been locked up? The sinks. Yes, park users and the homeless can't use the bathrooms. Great plan.

Yeah, you might like to read a bit about Kary Mullis.

Even if you take the claim that he was solely responsible at face value, he was nuttier than squirrel shiat:
A New York Times article listed Mullis as one of several scientists who, after success in their area of research, go on to make unfounded, sometimes bizarre statements in other areas.[41] In his 1998 humorous autobiography proclaiming his maverick viewpoint, Mullis expressed disagreement with the scientific evidence supporting climate change and ozone depletion, the evidence that HIV causes AIDS, and asserted his belief in astrology.[18][42] Mullis claimed climate change and HIV/AIDS theories were promulgated as a form of racketeering by environmentalists, government agencies, and scientists attempting to preserve their careers and earn money, rather than scientific evidence.

So, yeah, I'd listen to Fauci over that kook any day of the week.

Dammit, I'm agreeing with Iron again. Can this month get any worse?

Sometimes some people can be brilliant in one area but be loonies in others. Isaac Newton was a genius who developed the theory of gravity and motion, a brilliant mathematician and astronomer. But he also believed in alchemy, and in his entire career as an MP his only speech in Parliament was asking if the windows could be closed because it was cold.

Mullis also died the year before the Covid pandemic, so his comments clearly cannot refer specifically to the current situation. His criticism was that "Fauci thinks you can spot a virus with an electron microscope". Did he actually say that?

A few generations since WWII have enjoyed extended periods of relative geopolitical stability.

In a free society, one of the inevitable consequences of that stability is entitlement.  People who are ignorant of larger situations will protest being told what to do, no matter what the context.  Ignorance doesn't always mean stupidity, but they're close cousins.

It's kind of like death and taxes - reliable occurrences that need to be dealt with.

I honestly don't know why they're protesting.  Half of their adult population is vaccinated already.  That's an incredible achievement.
