I disagree with this decision. We need more unfunny conservatives to limit their bullshiat to one unfunny cartoon instead of one inane editorial per day.

I loathed Mallard Fillmore when the St. Louis Post-Dispatch carried it.  They put it on a separate page with Doonesbury as some sort of political 'balance', and when it came time for the readers to vote on which comics to keep and which to drop, they didn't include it.

After Mallard Fillmore approved of Dr. Tillar's murder, I refused to even glance at it anymore.

Twenty-seven years is a long run for any comic strip, let alone a political one. Doonesbury has been around longer, but hasn't been worth reading for about forty years.

I'm actually shocked by this.

They still print newspapers?

EdgeRunner: I'm actually shocked by this.

A small stack of tomorrow's USA Today was dropped off here a half hour ago.

COVID did make a lot of papers go online-only.

Who is this person who joined a sports team and caused such controversy?

A newspapery friend of mine once opined that it was nigh impossible to cancel a comic strip, because no matter how lousy it was, someone was going to complain when it wasn't there in the paper anymore. And consequently, there was no way to shake out the bad strips and replace them with any new ones that might come along.

When I was a kid reading the comics page, I thought I was just too young to get Mallard Fillmore. As I grew up, I realized it just wasn't funny.

I admit I actually liked Garfield at one point. If a strip can't clear that low bar, it's rubbish.

Sometimes I wonder if I outgrew it or it got lame...it's hard to tell with some things.

It probably got lame

and also the infamous "stopped being relevant".

I dunno, I haven't read it in years.

Wise invisible hand of the free market, I guess. Though I won't rule out seeing some state legislature morons floating a patently unconstitutional law that would try to force Gannett to keep the strip.

Mallard Fillmore: the only comic worse than Cathy.

You know what doesn't get canceled?  Popular comic strips.
It's only 27 years old?  I thought it was from the 1950s or 60s and it was published as a legacy strip.

ArcadianRefugee: Mallard Fillmore: the only comic worse than Cathy.

I always felt that Cathy wasn't written for me, as a male, but it had its moments.

I remember one where Cathy spent about 5 panels using all kinds of scented sprays and shampoos, getting ready for her big date, and after a quick stop for gas on the way to him, he only smells unleaded gasoline.

Garfield is just the Simpsons on a slower timeline. Once he realized it just prints money, it became the smooth jazz produce aisle music of comic strips. If you never got a chance to read the collections, it is frighteningly uncanny how the first 8 years were classic newspaper funny and maybe a bit edgy. Then it just became the Garfield movie from then on.

My college paper dropped the Boondocks around '06 when some hayseed townie complained about it and the spineless chumps never answered my emails calling them out.

I'll admit to being dumbfounded and confused and offended by The Boondocks when I first saw it on Adult Swim (never seen the comic). I mean c'mon man, every other word was n-word. But eventually caught on a bit and could enjoy the message.

Robert Klein was a comedian all over the place in the 70s and I thought the same of him then I revisited him as an adult and realized that my 10 year old self was correct that he was farking terrible.

It wasn't his skills.

So I guess...imagine being so bad, that they were actually able to can you.  I'd see that strip and it was obvious troll bait 90% of the time.

again?  i'm all for this stupid 'comic' to be cancelled again and again, but at least make sure it's not the same cancellation repeated

2021-03-09 7:48:46 AM
The comments section are filled with people declaring their cancelling their newspaper subscription bc of this.

So they were ok with Gannett gutting their local paper and reducing it to a page or two of news with a USA Today insert, but cancelling a lousy comic strip is reason to bring out the torches and pitchforks?

This is why we can't have nice things in this country.

Another example of "Why aren't there more conservative comedians?"

MF used to stink up our local paper.  Every cartoon was the same.  "Hey, Mallard, why did the chicken cross the road?"  "Because liberals suck."

Mallard Fillmore is the most joyless comic ever printed.  It's all bile and rancor.  I doubt even the most fascist of conservatives ever cracked a smile reading it.
