Maybe detroit style sucks. Maybe detroit doesn't even deserve its own style because the decayed husk of a town sucks.

I've never had real Detroit "pizza", much less Pizza Hut's imitation, but c'mon, this is an ad for a ripoff of a regional specialty that probably annoyes Detroiters as much as it gives them some recognition.
It's not something that inspires widespread hatred, like "Pineapple on a Pizza".

Yeah, they're really tasty casseroles, served in a bread bowl. They're not pizza, but what's not to like about them?
(I also actually like pineapple on pizzas, but even before I was a vegetarian, ham with them never seemed right, or even Canadian bacon which was more the original.)

To be fair, this is Pizza Hut the article is talking about and it is using posts from social media as their "data".  Saying there is unanimous agreement that Detroit style pizza sucks based on what Pizza Hut offers is akin to saying everyone hates gyros based on what Arby's sells that purports to be gyros.  And to be extra fair, I have not had either Pizza Hut Detroit style pizza or Arby's gyros.  Why would I as I can get good pizza and gyros where I live?

Good point.  I blame my lack of reading comprehension on my drunken state, but that is an easy excuse.  The only Detroit style pizza I tried was from a chain called Jet's.  It was good, but I was not enamored with it.  And I do not even know if that adequately represents the style (not about to drive to Detroit to find out).  Does anyone know if Jet's is a fair representation of Detroit style?

Jets:Detroit as Uno:Chicago
That is an ok mass market approximation of the real deal. It's good enough for when you can't get to the city of origin for the real deal.

I've actually been craving some Jets but they close at 9pm and pizza is usually my I had to work late and don't have energy to cook meal so I'm usually thinking about it just before my 9pm call with our team in Asia.

Be polite walk on the right: [townsquare.media image 850x637]

Just had this last night. We're staying at a friend's cabin by the lake and we're checking out the few restaurants open in the off season. We tried a small pizza, got home, and it was so good that I called up immediately after finishing it and ordered another.

Of course, the key is to use a meat with more flavor than ham and a good, slightly spicy sauce.

I always notice that the pineapple haters never have an actual reason for that attitude beyond 'It sucks, dude!' while the people who like it actually describe what they like and why. It's almost like the haters just grab popular memes off the internet...

You are wrong, at least for Detroit style, they cook the cheese with the bread to a well done but still pillowy texture and then put the warmed sauce on top, generally with a little bit of parm. In many ways it's like a bruschetta on cheesy garlic bread, only with cooked tomato sauce instead of fresh (and you can add additional ingredients if you like, personally since they put the pepperoni under the cheese due to the high heat I leave it off and just get a cheese).

Great, now I want some Chicago deep dish pizza, but nothing available around here. When I used to work in Illinois, but lived in Chicago, I'd puck up a deep dish but have them half bake it. Take it home and finish baking it at home. Fed us for the weekend. Also, put deep dish pizza box flat and level on the floor. Do not put it on your seat. The sauce will spill over the side, find its way out of the box, and puddle on your seat.

I wouldn't have it every time for pizza, but sometimes it really hits the spot.

I was complaining because it wasn't pineapple rings -- you lay the rings out properly before putting it into the oven and then the cutting lines on the pizza are clealrly defined.

That's how we leaned Calculus, you learn how to calculate witch cut angles' produce 8 slices all with the same amount of pineapple on them

I didn't hate the Detroit Style from Pizza Hut.  They just need to call it something other than pizza.  It kind of felt like a lasagna with no noodles.

What I do hate is Pizza Hut's pineapple specifically.  Over 20 years working for them at several stores across several States, and the pineapple still has the same smell as a tuna sub from Subway when you open a pouch or can of it.  Blergh.

I mean I mostly dislike it because I dislike Spongebob, and think it would be genuinely funny for him to be homeless.

But also, the sweetness of quality pineapple is unneeded with how much sugar is in the sauce (and the dough).  The meal is not supposed to be satisfying your sweet tooth or giving you Wilford Brimley Disease.  The decadent chocolate covered chocolate dessert is supposed to do that.  Additionally, pizza doesn't benefit from additional "wet" ingredients.  Nobody ever is upset their pizza is too dry if it's cooked properly, but too much moisture will cause the slice to flop when held, and that is a problem.

Which works, because tomato is a fruit.

I seriously do not understand the tomato pie thing around here. Fortunately, due to the lack of large gatherings over the past year I haven't even seen over that time.

As for the Detroit style, I never gave it much thought until I saw Kenji's recipe. Haven't made it yet, but plan to eventually.

OK, counterpoint. You need a good not-sweet sauce and tangy meat, such as pepperoni. Those give you the sweet and sour type effect. And a place that knows what they're doing doesn't put on so much pineapple that it makes the pizza soggy. They put it on top of the cheese, where it has a couple of layers before it contacts either the sauce or the crust. The moisture evaporates, or at least it does so more than making the pizza soggy.

But that's the most well thought out answer I've ever heard from a "Pineapple-Bad!" person before, so thank you.

I like diced pineapple better because I hate trying to bite thru the ring and not pull the whole thing off. Sometimes pineapple has tough spots. Doesn't even ruin things if you cut thru one. 😁
