One of the things I've always appreciated about Boulder is the willingness to inspire creativity in the student body by escalating conflicts through use of organized force against parties.  You never saw a line of cops in riot gear in any other party district but the Hill. Now that the government has been gifting used military vehicles to the police, CU grads will be able to respond to life situations like open insurrection and food riots better than graduates from other state institutions.  Except Colorado School of Mines, because those peeps bring it, hard.

I remember massive parties this big or bigger where I went (obviously we didn't have plagues back then just VD). They never sent a single swat team to break them up. What is that shiat. Usually they just let it burn out, when the kegs and fridges ran dry people went home. There was big deal after I was out that then sent in buses of officers in riot gear and rubber bulleted, roughed up and CS gassed a shiat ton of people; plus students started to set shiat on fire. That resulted in a lot of lawsuits and cost the city/state. Obviously you can't have huge gatherings with covid, but in normal times I don't know what you do in these sort of situations. Fence off an area and say have at it but don't drive out of here? Every moran videos everything stupid they do now so I guess go for court cases on property damage after the fact.

orbister: The students were stupid, but the police were creepy. Why the hell would you need a "light armoured patrol vehicle" to deal with a bunch of drunk students?

Considering the amount of damage the vehicle sustained, I'd say that was a good choice. They should have sent a larger force however. 800 people is a shiatload of people and to claim they were innocent because they are "just drunken college students" is a bullshiat excuse. They are a violent mob that should have been forcibly dispersed and arrested. Each and everyone one of those farkers. We are in the middle of a pandemic and what they are doing, outside of the aggressive actions to outside forces, is endangering the lives of countless individuals and is not just putting their own health at risk.

2021-03-08 1:01:47 PM
I should also add from what I remember a lot of problems in college are caused by people who don't even go to the college. Friends visit or locals just come and get wasted and trash shiat. It ain't their school. I bet half of that CU party problem crowd was the same.

lifeslammer: Shoulda loaded the cops up with paintball guns filled with the same paint they use in money bags that wont wash off and told them to fire at will

Back in my college town, the police got their APV's out and formed a line.  They fired gas and locked shields and marched on the party.  It got plenty of views, and resulted in the police department losing all of their APVs and their shields, and several people were fired.  The videos showed the kids were not disruptive, there was no COVID back then, and there was no history of injuries or fights breaking out.  Multiple angles of the video existed, and the cops were screwed on that one.

Then the kids ruined a year later by rioting, looting, and burning things when one student in a dorm shot their roommate.  So the police got ALL of their toys back, and got extra people and body armor, too.

Though ... I'll admit the police were always very anti-student.  I got stopped several times for no reason except that I was the wrong age.  They'd search for drugs, search for guns, search for alcohol, and never found anything so sometimes they'd make things up.  I got a ticket for not having FLARES, once.  So ... I'm torn on that town's issues.  The students need limitations, and the police force needs limits, as well.  But everyone on both sides is doing whatever they can to remove limitations for their side, and escalate the hell out of things.

Mutually assured annihilation may be the only solution.  I propose allowing each side to have a few nukes.

I'm not a cop nor an expert on crowd control. BUT, showing up ready for war typically leads to war.

How about they try this first:

Uniformed officers arrive (lights and sirens, be seen ).
Uniformed officer with bullhorn CALMY tells the crowd that the gathering is illegal and to disperse.
After waiting..... they probably don't leave....
Uniformed officers start arresting people one at a time.
Eventually people start to leave to avoid arrest.

That's funny, because that's awfully close to what they did.

1:30 p.m.: BPD responds to residence
Officers arrived at residences located at 12th and 13th streets for reports of parties. BPD said they issued warnings for violations of the public health order and said those present were receptive. BPD said these individuals are separate from the disturbance later on.

Just before 5 p.m.: Reports of a large party
BPD said they began receiving calls about a large party happening on 10th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and College Avenue.
Officers that regularly patrol that neighborhood, BPD's Neighborhood Impact Team, went to the gathering in an attempt to break it up.

5:40 p.m.: Crowd becomes violent
BPD said the group began pelting officers with glass bottles and grew in size.

5:48 p.m.: SWAT activated
Boulder county activated SWAT. Officers said they set up an incident command post and sent out officers in plain clothes to monitor the situation.
Longmont Police and Colorado State Patrol assisted later in dispersing the crowds.

8:01 p.m.: CU Boulder Alert
Students who attend CU Boulder received an alert about the disturbance.

8:22 p.m.: Crowd asked to leave
Those gathered were asked to disperse their unlawful assembly due to the conditions. BPD said these announcements were made three times in the area of 10th Street and College Avenue.

8:42 p.m.: Some people leave, but more violence ensues
Reports of large groups of students moving toward campus came in. Back at the site of the disturbance, while officers made announcements, people began assaulting them with rocks and bottles.
BPD said at least three SWAT officers were struck with rocks, some the size of softballs.
It was then that law enforcement deployed pepper ball projectiles directed at the ground and two canisters of smoke and one of tear gas. BPD said due to the wind; the gas was not effective.
Given the number of people at the event, BPD said the officers were pulled and told to observe crowd actions. Using a "toned warble noise" from the Long Range Acoustical Device to clear the crowd from in front of their vehicle, officers left the area. The windshield to the armored vehicle was shattered at this time.

8:45 - 9:00 p.m.: Crowd starts to disperse
BPD said people finally began to leave the area.

9:13 p.m.: Second alert from CU Boulder
Another alert sent to CU Boulder students read that people in the area could be subject to arrest and CU sanctions, warning them to avoid the Hill until further notice. Individuals jumped on a Boulder Fire Rescue engine that drove through, causing damage.

You really have not been paying attention.

Mr. Breeze: orbister: The students were stupid, but the police were creepy. Why the hell would you need a "light armoured patrol vehicle" to deal with a bunch of drunk students?

Replace "bunch of drunk students" with "drunken mob."

I mean honestly though, what were the cops supposed to do in this situation? The students weren't exactly innocent here.

Are you kidding me? Did you even see how white they are?

the money is in the banana stand: SpectroBoy: the money is in the banana stand: SpectroBoy: Cops: You know what would really bring a peaceful end to this large crowd of drunk people!?!? We should send the SWAT team armed for war. That should de-escalate it nicely.

Other Cop: Brilliant!

Because politely asking them to disperse in plain clothes would be better?

Please explain what a better approach would have been that would have had the massive gathering dispersed without violence from either side? I'll wait.

The solutions are so simple.  It takes an outsider to really see the possibilities.

Cruel and unusual...also possibly a war crime.

You're out-of-sync with the narrative on this one. This time, it's "Police caused this problem by not suppressing the event hard enough when they showed up."

Dinodork: I love how I'm getting (relatively) local news on Fark from the UK.

Are you implying TFA may not be entirely accurate?

God Is My Co-Pirate: I'm on the CU mailing list and we just got a letter from the president of the university about how disappointed he is in everyone, and how "there may be consequences"

Damn straight there will be consequences. That is a party school and everyone knows it. How they deal with this has long term implications.

They can't kick out 800 students which means any student who is expelled will argue they were unfairly targeted. Since the space wasn't university owned, they don't have any way that won't involve rich kids suing and winning.

Now throw in the fact that the Dept of Ed has an odd program where they will take back student loans from the university and one in 25 students were involved.  Enough cash is involved that there are going to be some serious consequences for the university administration, city leaders and landlords who love the cash but don't want to deal with the kids.

Okay. Where did they get the mortar from? I know people have fireworks stashes, maybe some black cats, bottle rockets, but a mortar? That isn't just something you keep in your firework stash

Yeah pretty sure that would not work out as planned. You know how I know you have never been in a large party that turns to a mob?

Simon Phoenix! Put down the gun...or else!!

Well, if the students do not face consequences, then the next group of loons will see that the students got away with it and will attempt the same.

The same applies for the administration and town.  I thought that school was the go to place for rich kids that couldn't get in to Harvard even if their fathers name was on the law building. When those schools far, they fall hard and fast. Nobody wants to go to a party school that isn't fun.
