Perhaps someone can enlighten me. I was under the impression they gave up their titles. Why are they still referred to as duke and duchess?

There were definitely quite a few bombshells, but it was more painful to watch at the start, especially the "Meghan Made Kate Cry/No, Kate Made Meghan Cry" segment. For ten minutes, it was like:

That was an one-hour interview stretched to two with more awkward pauses and commercials than a Seacrest American Idol episode.
But when you got to the bombshells.... Hole. Lee. Shiat.

I'd  like to think the continued negative press would turn people off from the monarchy & they'd lose their royal status but that's unlikely, given they are the original reality show.

Confiscate most of their wealth & properties & make them get civil service jobs. Do some good with the money instead of pampering useless rich fops who contribute nothing to society with their existence.

They're removed from their royal posts and the succession, but the former prince possesses his own title as an individual separate from the authority of the crown.

This is precedented for this kind of abdication, insofar as it's how the king whose abdication gave us Elizabeth in the first place was handled. You keep you status as a noble, and are given a new title and house if needed.

Obviously the entirely of British law since the 1300s has been solely dedicated to securing the property of the aristocracy against the crown's grubby little mitts, so there's no way for the crown to strip noble status entirely and only some effectively impossible ways for even parliament to do it.

Harry and Archie are still in the line of succession. It would take an act of parliament to remove them, and that hasn't happened as far as I'm aware.

But legally he is still in the line of succession which is set out by Act of Parliament. It will take an AoP to remove him.

I'd be done with them.

There was a really good article about Harry a while back in May or June. It deep dived over the course of his life: his mother dying and his service and him and Meghan.

I'm mixed race, my child is mixed race, and if a family member "worried" about the skin tone of said child I'd be absolutely infuriated. I'm infuriated on their behalf and I think they're rich wankers.

No good billionaires. No good royalty. Having that much concentrated power farks you in the head and makes your humanity leave.

I think it's funny how the biggest, most negative weasels around here are the same ones who think that everyone else is trying to lie to them. It's fine when Amazon and Elon Musk lie to you, you wuv them, but everyone you know of personally is a thief. You're not even in touch with reality. You've made yourself into a victim who can do anything you want, because everyone is out to get you. Theyre all lying, so who cares if you took $4000 from the company bank account? Everyone else is like that too.

What kind of mindset do you have to have to feel like everyone on earth is a con artist, and your only defense is to tear them down first? Only people who like to go around attacking others. If you're looking for it, you'll find it, Zimmy.

Pretty sure that doesn't apply to their Duke and Duchess titles, just his honorary military titles (Colonel-in-Chief) and their roles as royal patrons of various charities and other similar organisations.

I got rid of Facebook years ago but there was a personal benefit to family drama (or at least certain family members individually acting like idiots on there) being aired on it. Every once in awhile someone would grouse "why hasn't Killer Cars spoken to so-and-so in a long time?" and if my parents or siblings asked me about it, I'd send them a screengrab of "so-and-so's" FB wall or postings and be like "yeah, this is why I want nothing to do with that f*cking idiot".

I'm usually ambivalent when it comes to the British royal family, but taking away their security, especially after they moved here to the States, seems unusually cold.

There's a lot of politically motivated nutjobs that would love to get their hands on that family. Seems like reckless endangerment.

Yeah, much as I don't want to think it, I've been wondering too if it was William. Harry has said that William talked to him early in his and Meghan's relationship expressing concern that they were moving too fast. I could see this following, in like you say, a practical sense (because he knows what tabloids could do with it) and not fully thinking about the connotations of what he was saying. And that's a hard one for me, too, because he and Kate have done tremendous work in bringing awareness to mental health.

Or Charles, since I think Charles is likely the one who denied Meghan getting help when she was having suicidal thoughts.

Oprah apparently said today that Harry told her it wasn't the Queen or Prince Philip.

Cardinal Ximenez: would turn people off from the monarchy & they'd lose their royal status but that's unlikely

The trick to the whole thing is that they own half the country. Countries, I suppose, if we're being nasty about it. It'd be an incredibly messy divorce to separate the financial pieces of what is owned by the royal family, what is owned by the state, what the royal family has indefinitely leased to the state in lieu of funding the state from their coffers, etc. Even though the crown is largely ceremonial in affairs of state, in the day-to-day financing of the government, they're a linchpin which sorta holds the whole thing together.

(It's all a tedious shiatshow)

Yeah exactly.

People contain multitudes. Real life is messy. Having your brother blurt out some insensitive racist shiat doesn't instantly make him a monster. But I wouldn't be able to get over that, especially if the institution itself protects and reaffirmed his viewpoint.

"We need to talk about what we're going to do if the baby is dark skinned" is the most charitable sentence I can come up with and it makes my skin crawl.

My grandmother married my grandpa that was at least 1/4 Native American, and he looked liked it too. He wasn't part of his tribe, because his mother refused to have any dealings with them. She never told us what tribe she is from either, she was that ashamed. My great grandmother was afraid that my grandmother was going to have a dark skin baby. Not because of the racism, but on how society was going to treat them. My great grandmother got pregnant at 18 by a married man, was disowned by her family, and had my grandmother on a farm to hide it. It really farked her up, and she didn't want the same for my grandmother. She was relieved my mom came out white. Her other siblings not so much. I am kind of shocked that the newer generations in the royal family are being racist, when the older ones do not give a fark.
