"I tell ya...something's going on with the Skipper. You don't get that fat from eating coconuts!"

Back in the '80s I went to college for a year at Xavier Univeristy in Cincinnati, and there was a local band at the time called Jonas Grumby.

Combustion: "I tell ya...something's going on with the Skipper. You don't get that fat from eating coconuts!"

Well originally it was 50 passengers set sail that day, but the Skipper told us they all died in the wreck.  We'd hear funny sounds from the caves down at the south end of the island sometimes.  Almost like screams they were.  But isolation does funny things to your mind, and the Skipper was kind enough to give his coconut ration to those of us that were still hungry.  He had that smile, you just didn't ask.  Best not to think about it.

Desk Sergeant : Calling all cars. Calling all cars. Be on the look out for... now listen to this: Dangerously and accomplices dressed as nuns driving a sedan covered with... oh you'll love this... duckies and bunnies.
Calling all cars. Calling all cars. Come to Dooley's bar and grill. I'm buyin'.

He owned a restaurant in LA/West Hollywood near my grandparents in the late 70s/early 80s, grandpa took me there and I got to meet him.  Really nice guy to a 7 or 8 year old me.

20 years ago on Halloween I went as the Skipper in a Gilligan's entourage. Had to use a pillow for girth.

Now I'd need a corset.

Apart from Gilligans Island, he's also fondly remembered from that time he guest starred on Growing Pains as Ben's guardian angel for some sort of "It's A Wonderful Life" thing.

CSB: I was listening to Gilbert's podcast last week and they talked about Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel.
But to see it was just a tossed orange slice from Cesar Romero's joint........

Can I assume Danny Thomas' House of Glass Top Tables was just the block?

The fun part of that was seeing his medallion listing him as Jonas Grumby.

Let's not forget all the other captains he played...

Like when he was the port captain on that episode of McMillan & Wife.

Or when he was Captain Burke on that episode of The Lucy Show.

Or that time he was Captain Butcher on Adventures in Paradise.

Sheesh, typecasting much?

There are roles you're locked into for life, and you embrace it, and if you're fortunate enough, you can roll with it the rest of your life.

However, if you check out later-day pictures of Donna Douglas, she dressed as Elly May meets Baby Jane. *shudder*
