"For crying out loud, if we could be a little more prudent for 30 more days or 45 more days or whatever it took for us to get on rock-solid ground, that's the approach West Virginia is going to take," the governor added.

We've come a loooong way from Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you...." speech.

So West Virginia now has more sense than Texas? Even with the rampant inbreeding and tooth decay?

The first four seasons were crazy, but I figured with a new writing staff we were going to be getting away from the arbitrarily stupid plot lines. I guess we kept some of the same writing staff on..

How about a federally enforced mask mandate?

States that don't comply get to lose access to FEMA relief for the duration of the pandemic and two years after.

Call it the Abandon Malarkey Act.

Remember that the only reason West Virginia exists is that they had the good sense to get out of the Confederacy when they could.

I consider WV as a far right wing state, but with some iota of common sense - unlike TX, MS, or AL, they don't suffer from the delusion that they are temporarily embarrassed millionaires or feel the need to stiggit to the libs out of pure reflex. After all, they (and ironically MS) had been the only two states for a while to have mandatory vaccinations, with NO opt out based on religious beliefs.

To sum it up, if Trump told TX to eat shiat and call it steak, they would do it with a smile on their face. If Trump told WV to do the same, they'd at least tell him to back off.

Imagine such self-identified tough, bootstrappy, "I have red, white and blue flowing through my veins!" patriots crumple like a bunch of thin skin, whiny, spoiled, self-entitled pathetic little shiats over something as simple as wearing a mask.

Wear a farking mask.  On no, such a sacrifice to your freedums!  Assholes.

Next week's headline:
West Virginia's governor to be censured by his own party

2021-03-08 10:29:01 AM
It says a lot about the country when the state that dragged its feet, kicking and screaming, to avoid testing anyone, so they could deny there were any cases in the state for as long as possible, is now one of the voices of sensibility.

I'm not sure how many West Virginians there are on here, but I'll try translating what the governor is saying anyway: We made mistakes early on with our attitude and approach. We've learned and now let's do these things to keep people as healthy as we can.

Good job WV.

The mask is just a foot in the door.  Once that sort of shiat is socialized and accepted, the government starts harvesting your organs and precious bodily fluids to give to undocumented immigrants.

Most conservative states with democratic governors are using the state legislature to strip the governors power. Wonder if that will happen here. And I wonder if that won't later bite those states asses if a republican gets elected in.

Big Jim has handled things pretty well out here all things considered once WV realized we couldn't just ignore it. He lifted the ban on bars at one point over the summer but then as soon as a bunch of photos popped up on social media from Morgantown (home of WVU) showing unmasked kids packing into bars he shut them down again. He did change the states color coded map to get high school football games in. But once WV started testing he's been consistent, Wear a mask, get your shot, WV is not a healthy state so don't be stupid.

The Reps now have super majorities in the legislature but they have mostly focused on punishing teachers this session.

He's also trying to get rid of the income tax in WV but its early in the process and it doesn't look like he going to go full Kansas, they're just going to raise taxes that impact the poors more, so you know typical republican policies.

The governor also seemed to say, "Follow the @#%#ing guidelines" but blamed it on audio issues with his live stream.

Give them a choice to comply and receive help thanks to participation in America's wellbeing or throw it all away.

I'm convinced Rebekah Jones is the last good person in Florida and the rest pose an eminent threat. It's going to disgust me to see less conditions tied to use of FEMA bailouts for these irresponsible terrorists next hurricane than there are for medical marijuana patients.

That big, fat turd was never a Democrat. NEVER. He ran 5 years ago calling himself a Democrat because there were REAL republicans running. He's a coal mine owner and they are always republicans. He publicly switched parties after trump won and used trump to stay popular.

He may have a conscience but I've never seen anything that told me he was smart enough to recognize he was having a crisis.

Florida got rid of its mask mandate long ago, and its covid death rate is...average.  Texas has long mandated masks, and is...average.  Now that they have dropped the mandate it looks like they will...continue to be average.

I love these governors. Of course, I'm all for natural selection. I get that these idiots can be infecting people who are trying to be cautious which is why I stay home and avoid people. A large decrease in the population of Southern states can only help this country...

2021-03-08 12:48:03 PM
Factors other than masks:

1. How connected is your city/state with the rest of the world?  IE, NYC is the center of the world and therefore had lots of people traveling overseas and therefore got hit hard.

2. Is your city/state dense or rural?  Obviously, rural areas got hit later (although crowded places in rural areas, like meat packing plants, some churches, and things like Sturgis could be super spreaders).

3. What percentage of your population is non-white?  Whites seem to do better against the virus for whatever reason.

Etc.

Those other factors make doing a straight state by state comparison impossible.

Good for Minnesota.  However New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Louisiana, Alabama, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Mexico, Michigan, and Nevada also have mask mandates but have higher covid fatality rates than both Texas and Florida.  We have plenty of reasons to make fun of Florida; this just isn't one of them.

I'd argue that distinction makes little difference when they keep voting for conservatives, nearly all of whom are Republicans.

My mom is in NE Tennessee, and she's lost multiple "friends" over this. She's a cancer patient, and they're mad that she won't let them in her house to visit.

Most of them refuse to wear masks at all, even in her house. One of them is willing to wear a mask to come visit, but won't wear one anywhere else. That one posted maskless pics all over Facebook when she visited Gatlinburg at the height of the pandemic last year.

People on both sides like to conveniently ignore evidence to the contrary once they've made up their mind.  Usually it's republicans, but here it's liberals.  Lockdowns and masks are two things where everywhere I look, there's examples of lockdowns and masks working well and others where it didn't seem to do crap.  Other places that eschewed them (like say Florida and Sweden, amongst many others)... some did very poorly, others did just fine.  There's absolutely no consistency.  Which means they probably had little effect.

There's a LOT of factors going on that attribute to spread and if there's one thing it's shown over the past year is that we have ZERO ideas on how to stop the spread of covid.

Instead of trying to continually figure out better ways to stop it... it was just a year of 'Lockdown!  Mask Up!' despite not really any evidence they work.  And that's why we got to such a bad place.  Suck it up, admit you're wrong, and try and figure out something better instead of whining and stomping your feet.

/Hell, Florida it should've been the absolute worst because of the high concentration of old people and year-round constant air conditioning... two major factors for spread and mortality... yet somehow the situation never really got bad in Florida despite doing next to nothing.  Why?  I doubt anyone knows.

Yep. It's like everything else.  We elect politicians who can't seem to think their way to a compromise that makes sense

If people simply wear masks all the time indoors and dine outdoors, the risk is hugely mitigated. But all or nothing, the extremes rule the day.

The masks work.
In some areas, people wore them regardless of a mandate.  Where they didnt, like California in some places last year, caseloads spiked.

Wear the damn mask. Mask mandates only save lives if they induce more people to wear them.
