Author shiatting on Trading Places.  I'll say the blackface and interspecies rape may not have aged well, but you got one of the sharpest comedies ever made right here.  Quit huffing your own farts, AV Club.

As a huge 80's Eddie fan and also someone who appreciates John Landis movies I have to think that Eddie was the lesser of two dicks. Sure Murphy has had a weird career, and I'm sure his ego is off the charts but it's impossible to argue he's not an iconic, hilarious talent. Not sure the same could be said of Landis. Really,  John Landis's career seems like he got lucky with great stars and scripts. And he spawned Max Landis who from all accounts is an entitled, spoiled brat, sociopathic coont. Which just tells a lot about who John Landis is as a father and person.

H31N0US: Landis spoke about the accident in a 1996 interview: "There was absolutely no good aspect about this whole story. The tragedy, which I think about every day, had an enormous impact on my career, from which it may possibly never recover."

Two little girls died under a helicopter as Landis yelled at the pilot to go lower. And his career never recovered - poor guy.

Dude crashed one of the funerals and without asking for permission gave a eulogy blathering on how he'd finish his shiatty film as a tribute to their memory. He's lucky he didn't get his ass beat by the family.

Landis seems to do his best work when working conditions are less than pleasant.

Animal House, he had to deal with the co-writer who was the head of the National Lampoon and a raging cokehead.

Blues Brothers, he had to put up with Dan Aykroyd's crazy ass and John Belushi starting to play with needles.

then Trading Places and Coming to America, where he butted heads with Eddie Murphy.

Conflict among talented people is a blessing. I can't count how many stories and commentary tracks I've heard where everyone talks about what a blast they were having on set, but the end result turned out to range from average to garbage.

Chris Crude: To anyone that has not seen Coming 2 America, I highly suggest watching the original first. Very many running jokes paid off that I never would have remembered if I hadn't watched the original right before the sequel.

I plan on watching it soon but I always thought it would be funny if the original woman that was supposed to marry him is still hopping on one leg and making a sound like an orangutan because technically he never told her to stop

But if I'm right, don't tell me, because I plan on watching it

The_Sponge: Beverly Hills Cop III absolutely sucks.

/Glad that the 15 year old me saw Speed instead when I had to make a choice at the box office.

I am the biggest Beverly Hills Cop fan you are likely to find, and I can confirm that the third go around was a misguided, terrible, horrendous piece of shiat. It never should've been made. Eddie Murphy didn't want to make Beverly Hills Cop III. He was contractually obligated to make it. Just like Roy Scheider was when they made him do Jaws 2. Those multi-picture deals can be bullshiat.

beakerxf: My biggest quibble with Coming 2 America is that in the first one he's searching the world for a woman that's his equal. He finds one that is co-running a business and clearly capable.

Yet in the second one, his attitude is that women can't be leaders, not even the daughter that he's trained. Nope, he has to give an unemployed stranger a 2 week try-out because he has a penis.

He told Marc Marin the plot originally entailed him wanting to take additional wives and people talked him out of that. Which makes me wonder if he remembered the heart of the original.

It's really a subdued performance on the part of everyone involved. Not a complaint on my part but I could see it not being what people expected.

I can't really see any other valid complaint about it.

The author thinks the climax of Trading Places takes part at the stock exchange in NYC. AV Club, where the editors are as bad as the writers.

I confess, I'm generally a fan of the AV Club, despite their frequent eye-stinging pretentiousness.  A lot of their features are fun, and their film/TV criticism is routinely insightful and sharp.  I know I'm not always gonna agree with every opinion (to wit, I'm a fan of the movie Falling Down, which the AV Club dismisses entirely as entitled white-male apologism, which I think is a superficial reading of the movie).

Spice Must Flow: So during the opening credits, it's simply a shot of some silk fabric with the words over it. But the folds in the fabric looked like the letters S-E-X, and I pointed that out. My roommates said Nuh uh. So I went up to the tv and traced the letters, but they refused to see it. I'll see if I can find a screenshot.

Perhaps it is subjective, but somebody got paid to arrange that fabric. Lighting was set up, film was shot. They didn't just flop down some fabric and start filming.

The left side is doubly-curved similar to an S, and the right side has two straight lines intersecting almost perpendicularly. Does that X look like an accidental arrangement of fabric draping itself?
