"the empty cup or check gives us an out-a critical conversation-ending crutch."

Except for those utterly uncivilised bastards who don't go away like they should after one cup, but insist on imbibing a second on each visit.

People, they really are a terrible invention.

Have a guy at work that doesn't understand "end of conversation" phrases.

Tim: ok. Alright. I'll let you go then. I was just wondering about that--

When I was young, I had a big mouth and talked way, way too much. I got punched a lot.

I have developed a bad habit of thinking that nobody hears me, like I"m talking and they can't hear. All right, I have some issues, but this is new. I was working in a crowded environment for a while, and combined with working with stupid people--or to be fair, people that had nothing in common with me, and I had nothing to talk to them about--I started feeling like I could talk all day long, and nobody would hear it.

They don't notice what's going on around them. They don't notice the news. They don't notice interesting people. They don't have opinions about anything except food, or movies. They don't look up in the sky. They believe really stupid things that just make me say, What? while getting that smirk on my face, which they notice. There's just nothing to say.

"So you might as well leave at the first time it seems appropriate, because it's better to be left wanting more than less."

If you see someone running away from you after 3 sentences, that would be me.
People think that I'm really weird.
No, you just bore me.

"The burgeoning science of conversation needs rigorous descriptive papers like this one, but we also need causal experiments to test strategies that might help us navigate the important and pervasive challenges of conversation," says Alison Wood Brooks, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, who was not involved in the study. "I think it's pretty wild that we can put rovers on Mars, and yet we're just beginning to rigorously understand how people talk to each other."

"Takes all kinds."

I'd prefer the flies. Flies don't care if I go away and do something else.

Seriously, time is something you can never get back, and it's totally wasted in listening to some people.

Conversations are easy. First, state your purpose in talking to someone. Can they help you achieve this purpose? Continue the conversation either until they have, or they have signaled that they cannot. Remember to thank them for their time.
