"It's really a tragedy that many people have to leave their houses and to go to live somewhere else," she says.

No photographer - the tragedy was that this town was a notorious GULAG administration for 132 forced labor camps that were the reason for its existence.  It was a name that struck fear in  dissidents when they heard it whispered as a destination.   Those that populated the city after the 1960's were largely ex-prisoners and their descendants that had their internal passports marked to prevent them from leaving.

Just because the snow looks pretty and covers up  the coal dust doesn't mean it should be your ticket to your  15 mins.

Kadykchan says "hi" from about 2250 miles away. That was another infamous Gulag settlement that's now completely abandoned.

There would probably be quite a bit fewer of these if the USSR had taken the money they spent on the KGB, gulags, ideological enforcement, and vengeance, and instead spent it on making the country a better place to live. But, as always, east or west, capitalist or communist, we just can't have nice things, because greedy farks.

2wolves: Photograph 10/10, on the right side, shows a plowed road with what appears to be cars driving on it.  Someone is traveling there.

The "article" was only a few paragraphs long, where multiple times they say that some folks still live there.

Saw that movie on TV as a kid. It's the only scene I remember.
