I'd rather have $100 million than a job in Utah.

Do you really blame them? Think about, In December, Salt Lake City or Miami?

OTOH, $100 million can buy a lot of wives.

Where else can you simultaneously have three pregnant wives all under the age of 19?

/not really certain that qualifies as a perk since like 1872

Well let's see it's not in a major market, and you are in a cold, snowy area. That would scare away a lot of people.

Now you know how Ohio teams feel.   Manny went to Boston after they offered him the same money Cleveland did, but with a little more upfront for his agent to skim.

Have you ever been in Salt Lake City after 9pm?

The sidewalks have been rolled up, everything is closed - even the Alberto's.

And Wendover is 100 minutes away.

Yeah, sign me up...

If I'm a young man with lots of expendable income and a taste for the things many young men enjoy, I'm looking for something with more options than SLC.

Utah is a beautiful places, subby. It isn't all Salt Lake City.

If someone had paid for me to move to SLC as a young, single guy, I probably would have jumped at it. But that's probably because I love hiking, climbing, and snowboarding. Not many places in the US you can do all that in close proximity without huge costs/crowds/distances.

Denver can't attract top free agents either and I think we're a slightly more friendly city for professional athletes than SLC.  Good for their respective fan-bases the teams seem to know how to scout and draft.

I remember a story about Karl Malone after getting to Salt Lake and after a while he'd talk to any black person he saw on the street because in the city was like finding a 4-leaf clover.

That might have play a role as well.

They got lucky with Malone, he actually liked outdoorsy living, animals, big cabin house, etc.
