No, a fear of large objects is unreasonable. It simply means the person is an extreme negative nancy who only thinks of the worst possible outcomes

2021-03-07 6:33:58 AM
So, they have an extremely rare, completely treatable mental illness, and their solution is for companies to rewrite games and censor out all large objects and creatures, and the rest of us to deal with games crippled by their exotic irrational fear? Well, at least until someone afraid of 'small objects and creatures' (also a phobia) freaks out and wants those gone too, right?
How do we deal with gamers afraid of being outside and those afraid of being inside? Or of water? Or fire?

The abstraction of video games helps deal with phobias.   Up until a few years ago, I had pretty severe arachnophobia.  Believe it or not, I credit Skyrim as being at least partly responsible for helping me get past it (that and moving out to the country where you're never more than 5 feet away from at least a dozen spiders at any one time).

Oh, the writer suffers from Zackerie syndrome. Their head is Zackerie like their ass.

Oh noes! People pathologically frightened of big things will be unable to enjoy big things! Well I guess if they can't play Breath of the Wild or Majora's Mask they might as well die because while that may seem like living, brother, it ain't.

Ok, so they did mention Shadow of the Colossus.

And yes, that article was terrible.  It also appeared to have just ended mid-thought.  Did the author accidentally submit it unfinished and it somehow got published

You could have used the mod that changed the spiders to bears.

/In that game that's basically Honey I Shrunk the Kids, there's settings to make the spiders blobs, so people don't have to confront their arachnophobia

Once I was spending an hour just trying to get a good shot at a dragon's horn so I could get a new hat, I realized I was done with Breath of the Wild. Game was incredible, unparalleled, but I'd reached the point where it just stopped being fun.

It's fairly common. I went to school with someone with a peanut allergy and she freaked out at all 600 students because she saw a sandwich in the hall and viewed it as a threat.
People wanted trigger warnings on the rape cases in law school.
Went through PC training at work and they said I can't say the word "crazy" because it stigmatizes mental illness.

I have a phobia of average sized monsters in videogames. Unless the monster is of cartoonishly large proportions the game just feels too real and I can't play it without hyperventilating.

I tried the Sims just once but it was too much.

I'm not sure I ate for anything but resists and stamina. I probably did a few times, but not often. And I got clothes for resists as early as I could to avoid having to do more cooking.

I am very much I'm the school of thought that I shouldn't need potions and food and such in games so I generally don't do it, not as a moral stance, just usually don't need to do over the decades it's just part of how I play.

\I haven't played Bloodborne or the Souls games, but I'm led to understand the majority of those games is pattern memorization and pot spamming

Hell no, I ran away until I was strong enough, then I found two totally viable strats. Generally, I would get weapons from Hinoxes...Hinoxii? Usually using two handers with the spin... then It's hunt the Lionels.

Using those good weapons, plus fairy upgraded armor, you fall from the sky with your glider onto their backs and pound away. When you get tossed off, you shoot them in the face with a bow, then climb on their back again. You can also use the lightning instead of a bow, but that only works twice in a fight. Once you learn their timing, the other strat is to let them charge you then you dodge and frenzy.

I'm not trying to claim I'm a God gamer, just that I didn't like cooking, so I found other strategies.

Think of it like driving out of my way to avoid traffic. I like the feeling of control, and feel more relaxed doing it my way.

I didn't like trying to find cooking pots and I didn't like not having in game recipes to basically do one click coming instead of having to hand choose ingredients and look them manually in a pot.

Different folks play different ways, and accommodating different playstyles is one thing that makes games like BOTW great.

This is actually a thing. As games get more and more detailed, if you're looking for items the field gets cluttered with more highly detailed visual noise. You're examining the world through a narrow a window. Being able to make important details visually distinct becomes harder.

Thank you.  This is why I stopped playing Outer Wilds.  I have a 50 inch 4k tv and the text was so small I couldnt read it unless I was right against the screen.

And it's not like they don't have space.  It could be 3x larger and it wouldn't affect your view at all.

First time I ran into this thing, I saw something big above, heard the roars, but ran out of air at the bottom and surfaced fast.  Just as I surfaced, it hit and flipped me in the air (just missing me I guess).  Then as I got oriented underwater, it circled and came back for me again.  Farkballs, that was like being the cautionary tale at the beginning of a Jaws movie.  DID NOT LIKE.  Somehow it missed me, and I bailed - full speed.

But man, that was wild.  That game gets more claustrophobic the deeper you go.  More mysterious.  More dangerous and amazing.  It is quite a rare game.  I was bored at the start, wondering what I was missing - then realized I had to build and research, then explore a bit, and that would lead me where I needed to go.  My absolute favorite was the Strider Leviathans.  I need to go back and just hang with them again, someday.

The ending was an absolute blast.
