I have a 5-CD set of Jump Blues called "Ham Hocks and Cornbread".  Every song, nearly 100 of them, pre-dates 'Rocket 88' and every song is gritty, driving, dirty, sweaty rock and roll.

Rock and Roll arrived gradually.  There is no single progenitor record.

It's probably Rocket 88 but you can find some stuff that predates it that sounds an awful lot like rock and roll

I briefly considered getting an "88" tattoo years ago, BC of this song, and my birthplace/love of the blues, also 88 keys on a piano. Thought it would be a cool, obscure tattoo. Boy am I glad I didn't go through with it.

The question isn't, "when was 'rock and roll' invented?", it's "when did 'rock and roll' pass for 'white'?"

I'm glad you asked.

If that isn't it, then Roll 'Em Pete is definitely it. Just a year later.

This is big news. You should let Rolling Stone and the rest know that they're wrong.

It's pretty widely accepted that Rolling Stone has been wrong since approximately 1973 or so. Just peruse the old Record Guides, they were almost comically bad.

Im gonna go with Les Paul and Mary Ford's "How High the Moon."

Not because it was the invention of rock and roll, but because it was the invention of modern multitrack recording techniques.

Elmore James always played for a dance audience and he made the people jump. "Bobby's Rock" was at that time one of the favorite numbers with the crowd and Elmore used to play [it] for fifteen minutes and more. You just couldn't stand that hysteric sound coming down on you. The place was rocking, swinging!

It's shocking how persistent the cultural "need" to mark off a single artist or even song as the origin of rock and roll is. And it's shocking how persistently Haley or Elvis are lionized as the originators of rock. I mean, I like both and they made important contributions to the genre, but that narrative is so transparently a whitewashing of rock history that it would be funny if it weren't for how many people actually believe it. I remember in high school a friend of mine almost started a fight with me when I laughed after he said that Elvis invented rock and roll. He was outright angry when I told him that rock and roll was created by African American blues artists. He and several other kids in my class wouldn't even hear it.

Indeed.
