I'm happy* to let it function as a lane following cruise control, but nothing more

I'm willing to trust my driving over the computer, yes. A 100 times yes.

/not sure what other drivers have to do with this

Sorry I should have given an example. I live in a place with lots of roundabouts. I understand roundabouts.

The car....sometimes gets the concept. And sometimes doesn't.

Because while the ultimate goal is getting zero accidents, getting things safer than then are now is a step along the way.

Of course, I'm sure your driving is perfect, and everyone else in the road is an idiot.

As someone who rides my bicycle and walks frequently, I would feel safer if every single car on the road were using Tesla autopilot over having human beings behind the wheels.

Even though Tesla forbids and discourages drivers to NOT do that, it's their fault that someone ignored them and did whatever they felt like doing.

You know. Except for all the warnings they bombard you with about the software not being a replacement for attentive driving and to always be alert with your hands on the wheel.

Other than that

As someone who actually enjoys driving I just fail to see the appeal of auto pilot. I wouldn't be able to fully trust it and at that point I would rather just be in control of the vehicle. To me it feels like this tech is for those who view their vehicles the same as a microwave or fridge. It's an appliance that gets you from point A to B. Might as well just paint them all beige and call it a day.

I used to love cars. I used to argue with Doug DeMuro about cars every day at school. I knew all the specs, I drove all kinds of different cool and weird cars, and I never really minded driving long distances. Then I became an adult with a commute. I live in a rural area and there's only like 4 lights on my whole 50km commute. Twisty mountain roads with beautiful mountains, no traffic, and not a cop in sight. Should be a dream, right? That shiat ruined my love of cars in less than a year.

I'd pay through the nose to reclaim that time every day. I think Tesla will win the full self driving race, but I don't particularly care who gets there first. Whoever it is gets my money.

Whether the driver was awake or not is irrelevant. Let's keep the goalposts firmly in place. It was the autopilot who killed the pedestrian, contrary to the original claim above.

Nah. If you misuse the equipment, you're squarely at fault.

Autopilot =/= self drive. Honestly I think you know this by now, it's been repeated so many times, I think tesla bashers are copying the trump playbook and hoping if they repeat the lie enough it'll become a fact.

This story is about self drive cars which have killed 0 so far.

The hell's the point in having autopilot if you still have to watch the road and pay attention all the time, though?

It's a glorified lane-keep assist. The full self driving software is unfinished. That's what this article is about. They're expanding the beta program. It's pretty good. If you're at all interested, the YouTuber Dirty Tesla has lots of videos of the beta.

Yes. Because no one has fallen asleep at the wheel before. And if this horrible thing ever does happen I am sure that a normal non-AP vehicle will handle it better.
