I sat my kids down to watch Pacific Rim and told them, "it's a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters." They were interested enough to join in. Popcorn may have been a factor.

15 minutes in, one of them asked, "why are the monsters fighting the robots?"

"IT'S GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!"  I think about the time the giant robot beat the shiat out of a giant monster with shipping freighter, one of my kids high-fived me.

I hope their doing ok with their mother and she's not rotting their brains with shiat like The Crown.

I really enjoyed the first one even though they picked the least interesting character to focus on in Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh.

The second one was a bit Power Rangersy, but, I'm totally giving this new show a try.

All I remember about the first movie is that his character wouldn't stop shouting.

And the completely ripped off ending.

It's... aight, still, there's some annoying things with the characters doing stupid shiat just to move the story. I hope it doesn't become the template for the duration.
Oh, mom and dad? HORRIBLE PARENTS

I'd actually assumed they were based off a manga or anime to begin with.

He's basically the dollar store version of Joel Kinnaman.

Netflix apparently has a business model of taking 3rd party live action show properties, and making anime-ish stuff based on the franchise, and also taking 3rd part anime properties and making live action versions

Sometimes they end up running both versions, like Kakegurui

So is anyone surprised?

Moma has had his moments.  His Kahl Drogo  "tear down their stone houses" monolog in GoT was fantastic, especially given it was in a completely fictional language.

Hunnan has some OK moments, but has never been great in anything.  And he is responsible for the thousands of Hell's Accountants wobbling around the roads on their butt jewelry.

I was under the impression that it only got made because Del Toro is a mecha anime fan and essentialy said "screw y'all I'm making a movie where giant robots fight monsters."

The anime itself? Kinda average at best. Nothing really stands  out about it, and this whole cell shaded cgi deal is getting old

When I saw the phrase "Hell's Accountants wobbling around the roads on their butt jewelry", I thought it was a reference to Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

It isn't.

I actually prefer that movie, partly out of nostalgia, of course, but also because you can FEEL the people trying to make it more than you can feel any sort of creative fingerprints on Pacific Rim.

It can't try to pretend to be anything other than it is.  It's why The Expendables was so good at what it was.

Their Harley-Davidsons that only sit in the garage until they get put on the trailer and towed to wherever their Accountant rally is, or ridden half a mile to the bar to hang with his "bros."   And then dropped on the way back.

Came here for this. Tried to watch the first episode, as they transformed Pacific Rim into "disaffected young teen fun fight time" anime. The plot holes behind Pacific Rim were bad enough without having to toss in ridiculously bad parents, incredibly foolish teens, and poorly-written moments like the "oooh, discovered Giant Robot Ultraman Voltron Symbiotic Titan Atlas Destroyer" bit we've all friggin' seen, over & over again, for the last 50 goddamned years.

I loved the first one so much.  My description of the plot of the movie to my wife has actually become sort of a inside joke between the two of us.  The second one was godawful and killed any further interest in the franchise unless I see the words "Directed by Guillermo del Toro" again.

I'm convinced that those movies were the result of an Evangelion adaptation bouncing around Hollywood for two decades, like a dog eating its own sick and turds over and over. (Please don't assume from my statement that the source material is good because it isn't. But the end result is even worse in every facet.)

Guiermo really likes kaiju movies, as all decent people do, and Pacific Rim was his homage to all of them. Eva almost certainly influenced some choices, but so did so many other things.

The kaiju themselves are modeled in cgi, but they are designed to look like a rubber suit with a guy in it internationally.

One way to go wrong is to skimp on the giant robots fighting giant monsters scenes. Another way is to film the scenes so it's not easy to see the giant robots or giant monsters fighting, like having the scene set at night in the rain.

I don't care if it looks fake in the cold light of day, show me the action goddammit! I consider it a well made giant robots fighting giant monsters movie if, when it's over, I think to myself "I wish they had included a bit more of the human stories and cut back on the fighting scenes".

Stephen King once described the movie The Car this way "It's the kind of movie where you can get up and go get popcorn because you know the car isn't going to show up again for ten or fifteen minutes". A successful giant robots fighting giant monsters movie is one where once the first fight starts you can't get up to go to the snack bar anymore because there will be no ten minute gap between scenes of giant robots fighting giant monsters until the movie is over.
