SNS has been heading steadily downhill since Bilgari bought them.

never heard of this chain. is this a southern thing? is it like fire flies and only exists east of the Mississippi River? I like steaks and shakes so it isn't like I would ignore it for doing something disgusting like wrapping fried chicken in a waffle.
I guess I could google it. *sigh*

Yeah, the general public is not competent to operate self-serve kiosks. Evidence: every time I have seen people try to use self-service kiosks.

edmo: SNS has been heading steadily downhill since Bilgari bought them.

I've heard of them over the past few years, but it's hard to get too excited. One thing Utah has is a ton of local chains that serve 30 or 40 flavors of milkshakes, and real ones, nothing that comes from a machine. And I have a Freddy's Steakburgers place already.

So I'm not sure if this is a place worth getting excited about when I travel for work.

I agree to the point, as evidence from my limited time in grocery stores: The difference is that you only need one supervisor to take care of six machines and the idiots that use them, rather than hiring six flesh-and-blood cashiers.

Either we need to make family planning and abortion freely available, or we need to start with Universal Basic Income, because if you think service workers are farked now, just you wait.

"empower our guests to place and pick up their own orders."

Haha! You've empowered your guests to avoid you by getting rid of the one thing they actually wanted. Old folks won't be picking up their own orders at Cracker Barrel, either. Bilgari? fark you, biatch. This world really needs a reset on what is moral for business to do/get away with.

it was a mainstay for us in college from 99-02.  Late night food & smoking section, it was where it was at.

Until it was no longer where it was at, aka the steak and shake of today.  Truth be told i'd never be mad if someone wanted to go there, but theres an awful lot of good options for a 10 dollar better burger & fries out there.  for garbage food to me its still five guys on "F the diet"days, and the fact that it costs a bit more is overridden by all them quality fixins & those cajun fries.

but kiosks? seriously are you kidding me right now? the only thing that comes a very distant second to anti-maskers who creep incrementally closer behind me in the checkout line, are morans who have clue negative-twenty of how to use the self-serve terminals. I'M SORRY ARE YOU FROM THE PAST.

I always use to double take whenever I'd see mention that Steak and Shake was table service, I was like, "Wait they have table service there?"  Now I don't have to.

So now they're Chipotle.  Whoopee.  Never seemed like a table service place to me.

I agree with those who say their quality has gone way downhill.  I used to eat there pretty frequently, now i can't stomach the thought of it.  Around the time that they stopped publishing coupons was the time I figured out it just wasn't worth it.

There's a couple of Freddy's locations in my area now, which is the same thing but much better (costs more, tho).

A Culver's is being built in my area, once it opens and the burn-in period ends I'll have to check it out.

2021-03-06 6:26:01 AM
We had one locally that went t*ts up like 10 years ago.

The food was fine. The fries were honestly the best item on the menu. Overall; they were average.

I've said it in other threads about burgers/chains, and I'll say it again: Culvers FTW.

As long as it's staffed and managed correctly (nearly every one I have been to has), I can almost guarantee you that you won't be disappointed with their food.

The one downside for me is their fries -- they use crinkle cut, which I am not a fan of. I opt for cheese curds, like a fat kid, instead.

You jest, but online ordering is pretty much the only way I have been successful in NOT getting my dish covered in so much mayo that the mayo outweighs the sandwich by volume. Plus you can do some oddball customizations that will either get a blank stare or an "ok" followed by, you guessed it, a sandwich whose mayo exceeds the volume of the sandwich by net volume.

Either people are stupid and don't know how to use a display or people are stupid. Choose one.

They tried

2021-03-06 10:36:58 AM
Steak and Shake in the Chicago suburbs is still great.  Went to one near downtown(UIC area, on Halsted)  and they had no drive-thru, no parking lot, no table service and no clue.  I asked for a large Caffeine-Free Diet Coke and they were like "I don't think we have that" and I had to point to the fountain that clearly said "Caffeine-Free Diet Coke".  That and the having to pay to park will keep me away from that particular location in the future.

When have you ever turned on a faucet and gotten instant hot water? Even if the heater was under the table, by the time the water got hot enough for tea you would have filled several cups. I doubt they would put P.O.U. heaters under each table.

The staff had a large traffic cone in the back. To let off steam, people would go in the back and beat the shiat out of it.

It could be a hot water recirculating loop.

Never seen it done for tap water, but its common in hyronic heating.

Would be much cheaper than operating a bunch of POU tankless water heaters. A recirculating pump takes less energy than heating elements in a POU.

Biglari also said the change is a way to embrace efficiency and transitioning the service model to empower our guests to place and pick up their own orders.

That's a lot of words to say "save money on labor costs."

That makes sense, but there should be something under the faucet to catch spills. Some sort of sink-like apparatus, perhaps?

The picture is extremely pixilated. No fine detail. But it looks like a small gap in the wall paneling and the desk.

I would assume it's a low pressure faucet (cause tea) and it might be slightly sloped to a trough.

Can run the trough through multiple rooms until it hits a pvc pipe. The the pvc has an air gap above a trapped sewage branch.

Hey I'm just throwing out ideas and how I would do it on the fly. It's workable.

Could be as simple as an engineer doesn't expect people to spill and did not account for a drain. Cause engineers do things... weird things... and they dislike it when I point out they farked up.

/actually might go back to school for mechanical engineering at 34

//I'm you're man for troubleshooting and proving in the field in all things mechanical.

///seriously... it really might not have been thought out and no drainage, literally just saying how I'd do it.

That is true. But we all expected that.

What made us angry was the other customers being assholes and stiffing or insulting us. That seemed to happen at Steak 'n' Shake more than anywhere else. But I can only speak for the location where I worked.

Half the problem is that there are so many flavor options available that it takes people too long to decide which one.
