That's all well and good, but I think the aura of menace mostly came from the fact that he was a man-mountain of muscle that hit like a wrecking ball and had mad boxing skillz.

He would crazy trash talk at the weigh-in and then after the match, would gush to his opponent about it was an honor to fight him and how much he loved the guy.

That last part is called a eulogy.  It's traditional.

Yes someone who might chew your ear off or rape you can seem quite menacing.

I'm not sure any athlete at their peak in my lifetime was as dominant as Tyson was in his.  Maybe peak Pedro?

In combat sports, the only guys I can think of are Money Mayweather and maybe Anderson Silva.

Tyson was incredible, it's too bad that King and others basically used him up and spat him out.

Tough one with boxing.  There you know your opponent far in advance and can train for them specifically.  But that also means Tyson's opponents had that same benefit and it helped them not one bit.  Serena Williams peak was pretty damn dominant.

But did anyone else have a funny song written about them like Tyson?

No robe, no socks, and no music is how I do my business too.

Myk-House of El: Serena Williams peak was pretty damn dominant.

Definitely a decent comparison. Ones that also crossed my mind before I kept it specific to combat sports:

- Schumacher
- Brady
- Rinaldo
- Tiger
- Lebron

Technically that was in my lifetime, but I don't really remember his peak in the late 80's and early 90's. I was all of 7 in 1990.

Add Hamilton and Fangio. And Gretzky and Jordan. Hockey and American Football could be considered combat sports, but not for Brady or Gretzky.

He was my favorite boxed on ESPN back when.   Early on, big guys would come out and think that going toe-to-to-toe with him was a good strategy.   Finally, Bonecrusher Smith realized that tying him up and hanging on for dear life was the way to go.

He never fought Butterbean ... the true champion

Roy Jones Jr. was pretty damned dominant for a long time. He should have never moved up to heavyweight.

Anderson Silva over Fedor Emelianenko? I can see the argument, at least.

After this thread I went out and watched this. I didn't realize that early in his career Mike was fighting every 2 or 3 weeks. In 1985 and 1986 he had 27 fights!
