Just watched it. Why have I never seen it?

And it's less impressive than what I imagined from the trajectories. Looney Tunes physics has ruined my sense of reality.

I was 14 at the time and really into dirt bikes and motorcycles in general, so I paid attention to this event. It seemed overhyped to begin with and I wasn't surprised at the outcome.

Knievel claimed that the force of the launch knocked him out and that he was at the mercy of the guidance system of his vehicle when it crashed. Others have posited that this outcome was the result of the bellyfull of pills and beer ingested preflight by Mr Knievel. Who are you going believe?

Haha.  And the dashed red line on that graph is a gross exaggeration of his trajectory.  What actually happened is that Mr. Knievel knew he didn't have a hope in hell of making the jump and pulled the parachute cord the moment he cleared the launcher.

There's a wide line between a stunt biker and an astronaut.

He appears to have abandoned his personal vehicle is bureaucratic speak for he intentionally left his bike at the parking lot. It also says something different than "it appears the victim was viewing the canyon from the rim and fell"  which is the kind of thing you typically see when it's an accident or stupidity that caused the fall.

The bike and his body were found in the canyon. Personal vehicle seems to mean he was either towing the bike or had it in the bed of a truck.

The article said he was taken out by helicopter. Personally, I think he was taken out by the canyon floor.

There's no 'jump spot' there that I can see - was he drunk or a giant optimist ?

I was about 14 or 15 when he did it. There was weeks and months of hype beforehand. I have an Evel button around here somewhere I bought at a local department store before the "jump." In my mind, it was all part of the 70s sillness of pet rocks and disco.

So why does it say this in TFA?

That's what happens when you fall 45+ stories.
Physics tells me he took 5 seconds to fall and was going 109 mph when he hit.
Looked up terminal velocity for a human body and it's 150-180 mph, though I think hitting rock at 109 will do the trick.
5 seconds is long enough to watch your life flash before your eyes several times.

I had the 'stunt cycle'.

Loved that thing, used to sit and wind it up and when you stopped (or before if you slowed down) it would be off. Worked great until it never worked again and went in the bin.

Had the drag car too with the parachute that never worked properly.
