Ten years ago, one of the Caturday regulars - AlienNarrr! - was dealing with cancer and had mentioned her  desire to travel just in case her health did not improve. So a few of us hatched a plan to fly her down to the US (she lives in Canada) and have her escort a shelter cat to her new home. (Of course there was a cat involved!)

Caturday regulars and lurkers alike generously donated all the funds necessary to make this invasion happen. So we brought her to Binghamton, NY where we held possibly the first ever Caturday Fark Party. Much hilarity ensued, much alcohol was consumed, and we all had a blast.

She then flew Vanna the cat to her new home in Texas, and from there embarked with an escort and proceeded to drive all over the eastern half of the US, stopping to meet dozens of Caturday people along the way. And that is what the 2011 Alien Invasion Tour was all about.

I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy and safe this week.  It's been eventful here with the refugees going back to Texas.  And then, under consultation with my son's therapist, the House of Furmaggedon has grown once again.  So welcome to Caturday Abed.  The son is on a serious Community binge right now.

He's 8 weeks, has some Bengal in him, and is absolutely fearless with all of his step brothers.  If I can get him to sit still for more than a few seconds, I'll get some more pictures of him on here.  Stay healthy and safe this weekend everyone.

Caught these two boys in the parking garage at work about a month ago. They survived getting snipped and vaccinated at the vet. Of course, they would tell you otherwise.

A few weeks ago at the vet...

This is Wabbit, not because he sorta looks like a rabbit, but because before getting snipped, he was trying hump everything.

Good news/bad news for Henna the foster cat.

The good news is she left for her "forever" home on Wednesday. Seemed like a nice couple although I had some sense it was more her idea.

The bad news: less than 24 hours later, we had Henna back. Apparently she was "stalking" the husband and did not like him. She got along fine with the other cat who was adopted from the same shelter just a few weeks back. I don't know, I wasn't there, but this is one of the nicest cats I have ever met in 50+ years of being around kitties. It's hard to imagine.

That said, we once had a cat that was an excellent judge of character and made his opinion known of a few people.

She was a little subdued when we got home so we kept a close eye on her. She seems fine.

She's gonna be a great companion for some nice woman who likes having a cat nearby at all times, preferably on the lap or right next to her.

Meanwhile, we get her for a while longer.

We went by the foster and let Goober Pea have a look and pick her new sister out, and in two weeks, we will welcome a new Monkey to the SpaceMonkey family!   Shes the one in the left, the one with the black tail.  Her name will be Trixie, so we will have Chis named Tulip and Trixie.

We have to wait two weeks so she can get her second round of puppy shots, but we are guaranteed her because we went on ahead and put up they adoption fees.  We are getting her from the same adoption agency we got Goober Pea from.

Hola, El Gato Amigos! Or however you say that.

I am back from  hospital - have been for a few days - and  am slowly improving. For those who are unaware, things turned out much better than expected. All visible cancer was able to be removed, which is the exact  opposite of what I was told would happen before surgery. yay! Ophelia is DEAD and GONE!

I still have to do chemo when I'm more recovered from surgery to make sure she's gone-gone rather than engaged a cloaking device of some sort, but things are looking much better than we thought  they would, so  I am pleased!

Due to the recurrent nature of my kind of cancer, I still have  a better chance at long term survival if I can have gene therapy. I have my first appointment with the genetic counselor in one week. We know Opehlia will have offspring coming for me, we just don't know when. Even if I am not a good candidate for gene therapy, the longer I can go before my first recurrence of cancer the better my long term chances. We'll make a plan no matter what the genetic testing shows and  try to stay in front of it, in other words.

I'm still not back all the way of course. I'm sleeping a lot, still in pain (though it's getting  better all the time) and generally just tired of it all in addition to being physically unwell. But OH, WELL. I am alive, and that gives me the happiez!

I remember the Alien Invasion - I was lurking, couldn't remember my login to say "oh, hai!" and didn't feel like making a new one yet - and it will be interesting/fun to see the old crowd raising what I'm sure was super polite hell  across the American Southeast.

K. I'm going to get a coffee and try to sloooowly catch up wif you guize. If I suddenly vanish, it just means I fell asleep. Again. lol

groppet: Wow I think that was right before I started coming in on a regular basis but Isaac and the roommate were living with me at the time. Wow where did the last ten years go? Well now I feel old and I am going to go cry now.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: As I'll most likely only be working part time when I go back to work, I need to keep things cheap, but I also need decompression space. I'm gathering information right now, so hopefully I'll get it figured out, eventually.

*Waves*

I'm here in Half Moon Bay. We have parking, guest bedroom, 5m walk to the beach, two cats, jigsaw puzzles, fireplace, and even a back porch w/ fire pit, grill, and pellet smoker. (And cable TV, internets, and a pretty wicked gaming 'puter connected to the big screen.) My wife is an excellent cook, and I can grill a few specialties (and make decent pastries and sourdough bread). She also went through a similar cancer situation, about 10 years ago, so hopefully there's some sympathy / suggestions for you, too!

We'd love to have you stay for a day or three. =) Just let me know!

As to decompression -- I spend all day in one of the spare rooms as my "work from home office", and Jenn has her own office room (and sometimes still has to head into work, maybe 30-40% of the time?). So lots of time to relax, wander down to the beach if you have energy (happy to drive you to nearest access, too), and some nice local eating (dunno about distance nor covid status, TBH, but we can always fetch / get delivery, and enjoy at home!)

And did I mention cats? Raphael and Athena are neglected, and require many pettin's. They'll be the first to tell you so.

Let me know! Bold me in this thread, or email me at tkil[nospam-﹫-backwards]krafartlu*com or SMS me at +1 650 296 9563 -- put "caturday" in the text somewhere!

My offer of random house retrofitting still stands. If nothing else, I've substantially upped the creepy quotient with this invite, so... win?

Regardless, it's great news that you're doing so well after the surgery. I know you have some rough times ahead of you, but it seems like a pretty good outcome compared to what we were thinking would happen 2-3 months ago!

And now, it's time for adventures in what did you do, Milady?

Milady is very good at running through doors when they're open for only a split second. We know this and should be on the lookout for it, but it doesn't always work that way. Just now, Milady was locked in the bedroom. We don't know who she got past. What we do know is that she was wet and there were wet spots on the bed when we opened the door a short while later. Fiancé had left a bucket of water in the bedroom that he was using on the orchids. We think Milady had a run in with the bucket, somehow soaking her lower half, but not actually tipping the bucket over. Good job, Milady!

She was briefly sitting on the radiator, but I think it's been turned way down, so she's gone to cuddle with Gustav for comfort.

akimbotoo: Bathia_Mapes: The Ice Queen: For some reason, I was thinking the cat she was escorting was Delta.
I wonder how Delta and Vanna are doing post Invasion tour?

Maybe I'm confused, but I thought Delta was one of the kittens in cretinbob and domari's care.

I remember Delta as being special needs and they were going to keep her.  Vanna was her mom.

That's right, Vanna arrived at Little Mews malnourished and very pregnant. She ended up giving birth to 8 kittens, 4 stillborn, the other 3 too small to survive very long. We fought to keep Delta going, but was never quite right.

Vanna went off to Texas, Delta stayed with us.  Delta was so adorable, quirky, she remained small and had issues but she was very much loved by everyone who saw her. Especially here on Caturday. She had her own calendar, Christmas ornaments, and "Flat Delta" had a lot of adventures!

A couple years ago, Delta started to go downhill fast, we had to send her off to the bridge. :(  It was sad to let her go, but she was with us longer than we thought she would be.

Delta will remain be in our hearts forever.

So Earl is acting like she *might* feel a little better today. She got out of bed, ate a little food, sat on top of her tree and is doing the "sit so I can sit on you" thing.

I guess I'll see if she takes her morning meds/drinks her broth and how she acts afterwards. I don't want to traumatize her with a vet visit if it's not necessary, but at the same time I don't want to blow off anything that requires intervention.

You guys already know the struggle. So what I really mean is Earl is doing slightly better but maybe much better I dunno yet and so we're at that "wut do?!" gray area that we all hate so much.

Gods bless it. 😒

Maybe turkey dinner tonight, just to be sure? Earl is smol. We can totally share a turkey breast and have plenty. 🙂

Dermatologist vets office just called.   The fungal test came back for Ellie.  FUDGE.  Ringworm.  I just ordered the script from chewy

Vet tech suggested keeping Ellie separated from the other pets and me.  I said she hates them all and does not hang out with them.  She said YOU might get it.  I said I'll deal with it.  And then I said 'I dealt with someone with Alzheimer's who wanted to kill me, I can deal with this.;'.  She said she liked how I deal with things.

Good times.  Med wasn't horribly expensive.  52ml for $53.  1 ml per day for 7 days, then off for 7 days and repeat.  She will have to go back for recheck

I return my loaner car tomorrow.  My car is done.  It is $800 less than expected.  Hopefully it starts happily and the exhaust no longer rattles.

Oh and Ellie is already feeling better so the oral med will really eradicate the evil stuff

Well, I've been busy.  Mrs. Aardvark and I had a kid since my last post.  He's now 2, and the cats alternate between indifference and terror of him.  Except for Josie, who would really like to like him, but he just hasn't quite figured out how to pet her yet.  But she does think that his changing pad is a great bed.

Fark user imageView Full Size

Josie herself had some health issues last year (just before covid hit), and needed surgery to remove some very large bladder stones.  She had a rough few months before the vet was able to figure out her issue, with a lot of peeing in inappropriate places, but once the reason was discovered, she recovered quickly, and is now back to tormenting dwennie.

Earl is acting lethargic - I noticed it last night, she's still just BLAH today - and she isn't really eating or even drinking all of her broths today, so I think I'll settle into bed with her for a post-breakfast nap. She's going  straight to the vet when they open tomorrow, tho. One of her eyes is all weepy, too. I'm hoping it's just a kitty cold of some sort. My poor baby! She's been through so much lately! This cancer BS is hard on my whole family, but especially Earl because she doesn't understand why things are different or what's going on or anything. She doesn't need her own sick to deal with , too. My poor baby!  She's my bestest friend and I love her so much! I just want her to be healthy and happy and feel OK. ♥

paleryder69: Real Women Drink Akvavit: Morning! I am actually hungry today, so I gotta get on that whole  eating thing, too. I just finished my first  bottle of Soylent that Paleryder69 sent my way. (Thank you again!) I tried the banana flavored one first. It was not my favorite thing, but it was not terrible, it was actually tolerable and I drank it all, just like I promised!  I may now commence with the eating of things and worry slightly less about my nutrients!

the banana reminded me of that candy called a banana bike... yellow square candy of my youth. I think they used the same flavorings. the mint chocolate and the plain are the flavors I like but since taste is such a personal thing, I make no judgements on what others like or dislike.  They even sell a powder you can mix yourself with the liquid of your choice (milk works great) and what ever flavoring like swiss miss or hersheys chocolate syrup (not an option for me since I am sugar sensitive) I use a little hand mixer so I dont mess up a blender jar. the soylents may not start out being the yummiest, however the flavor grows on you. But in your case I think the nutrition outweighs any taste issues. oh and 5 of those will give you everything your body needs to live one day. people have lived on that stuff for 30 days with no ill effects other than missing chewing. It even includes fiber so that you poop correctly.

[external-content.duckduckgo.com image 430x200]

Soylent is the best of the supplements/meal replacements, as far as taste goes, for sure. I've tried a lot of them at this point and the chemo sensitivities combined with my natural pickiness have made them intolerable. Some have even made me physically ill. My natural pickiness can usually be overcome when it's important. I just slam it  down like a really big, unpleasant snap of cheap tequila. I don't know if it's the chemo side effects or that supplements are just really that bad, but I wasn't able to do that with most of them.

I hope the other Soylent flavors hold up to the promise of the banana, because if they do that won't  be an issue at all. I can just do what I did today - drink the Soylent, then reward myself with a treat I can eat! Today it was an apple variety called a "Nikita" (taste - good. a sweet/tart variety, but not kick you in the face big flavor, so rather mild. texture - a wee bit  too soft, but still OK. I'll eat this kind again.) and a cheese souffle from Panera. I ate half of each, cuz the Soylent filled me up but I still wanted foods.  I will eat the other half around lunch time or for breakfast tomorrow.  Last time I had cheese souffle and apple, I also ate half right away but didn't have the Soylent to help with nutrition as  well, so I think this is a "win". yay!

Now I'm *definitely* exhausted and need a nap. Cheese souffle and apple is the BOMB, you guys. Everyone should eat that kind of food at least once in a while. (and then get a nap!)

Teriyaki chicken, roasted butternut squash, and cilantro lime rice. Given all 4 carnivores in the CAT-5 arrayed around my seat during dinner... it smelled good. Tasted great. With a lattice apple pie for dessert

Ellie is NOT happy with me.  I just used one of the anti-fungal wipes on her chin, nose, cheeks, forehead and ears.  I could not get her pill in her this morning for the staph infection so I will do it later today and switch time to that time of day...supposed to be every 24 hours.  I did get her to eat some food...but had to push the plate under the bed using a yardstick....and then she ate about 1/2 of it (which was a full can of fancy feast)  I take that as a win

Mississippi roast in the crock pot.  Sourdough was fed so I will be making rustic sourdough bread soonish.

And my car, my car, IS HOME!!!!  Do you have any idea how wonderful it is to step on the gas and have the car go?  And to start the car and not freak out?  All Four O2 sensors failed....I was running on fumes!!!  And the catalytic converter was also causing some problems so it was replaced.  And a slew of consumer product safety things done.  Fuel induction service was also performed.

I got in and the car is relatively quiet (no rattle from the back, Catalytic converter).  And when I stepped on the gas, it went, no sputter or anything     I felt relief when I started it back up after my short trip to one of the PetSmart's (there are 3 of them within a 3 mile radius of my house)....I got some new dog/cat beds for my bedroom so the furkids have some new beds to fight over.  One of the nasty ones went in the trash this morning, it was being held together with safety pins.

I got my corona virus vaccination this week.  I'm so happy that I live in a time of such quick medical advances.  I was thinking about my grandmothers this week, whose children would have been some of the first to get the polo vaccine, and how hard it must have been for everyone in past epidemics and pandemics who could only watch infections rip through communities.  What a difference 100 years makes.

I'm glad to hear of all the Caturdayers' health improvements and housing improvements too.  I hope everyone has a good day today 😊.  And it has been interesting to read about your alien party memories.

ProcrastinationStation: I still like the name Flat Akvavit  :)

Y'all, I think its Caturday MAGIC that the anniversary of the Alien Tour happens right as RWDA is recovering from her own cancer battles.

What better encouragement to recover than seeing the fun that Caturday can put together?
We've (well *you*, I wasn't active then) have done it once.... who's to day we can't do it again?

Akvavit across the country mabye?

Actually, I *am* planning on traveling and seeing and doing and finding new, interesting places to drink coffee and chill (and talk to people I do not know and ask them "but why?" with an open heart and mind, as I tend to do) I am going to attempt to visit some of the places Flatvavit has been. She's forward recon, a term I use to make our  ex-military types happy cuz that tells them I do pay attention. :-)

When I am well enough to hit the road and just GO, I'll start with short trips, close to home. As I improve and my financial situation starts to get better, but hopefully before I have any recurrence of my cancer (if I am indeed declared NED/remission), I will make it further away and for longer periods of time.

The reality is that even if I am NED (no evidence of disease) by summer, my lifespan has most likely been dramatically shortened. For this reason I am not entirely sure it is worth my time to go back to working two jobs - I am pretty sure it is NOT - when there is still so much to go and see and experience. I'll be working one job, perhaps even only part time (OMGs! that is a hell of a  change for me!) and focusing my energy and my time on having those experiences.

I may also figure out how to throw something online so everyone can come with me. I know nothing about blogs or websites and whatnot, but I do know it's more fun to have adventures if you can share them with others!

Would I make a good travel writer? No. Could I make a halfway decent experience writer? You betcha! So let's go have some experiences and whatnot while we can! At least that's my thinking at this point in time.

Time really is our most precious  resource. Mine has been undervalued for decades. I  refuse to undervalue my remaining time, no matter how long it may be. It is MINE, I get to use it however I please - so I will. :-)

Timid Goddess: A small windfall means we will have shelter from when we have to leave the house til we have a new place.  Spouse has been busy arranging a foster or new home for the two cats as well as transport there.  Still a LOT of uncertainty...

I remember the Invasion, wanted to meet Alien, but she didn't stop close enough.  I might have still been lurking much of the time back then.

I was thinking about you the other  day! I'm glad things are moving in a positive direction even if they are far from ideal. I totally get the uncertainty thing - I HATE uncertainty if I have no control over anything. I can scarcely imagine how hard it must  be even with help. I'd be losing my damn mind on an hourly basis, at least.

Letting of the things we can't control really is hard. For some reason phrasing it that way never really worked for me at all. Then I learned about stoicism and the Stoic philosphers and for some unfathomable reason, that helped. The deal there is that while I may not be able to control some things going on around me or that directly impact me and my life, I can control how I react to them. So that's what I try to do.

It's not easy. It's not fun, because UNCERTAINTY SUCKS. But I do try to manage my reactions to uncertainty, to find if not a positive, then a tolerable - and then run with it, even if it makes me look like a damn loon. I already feel like one a lot of the time, so why not go for the full look too, right? ;-)

I wish there was something I could do to help you guys in a real, meaningful way. I truly do. I hope that when I am well enough to travel again that if I make it out near you I have the opportunity to bring a little housewarming gift, because everything got better and you're well settled. I hope that's reality sooner rather than later.

Squishy hugz all around! Be sure and give some to the Little Gas Molecule for us! She's pretty tough to be going through all this so gracefully. She deserves mad props for it - as you do for giving her the support to handle it so well. Good job, everybuddy! ♥

Ratbat! Man, she was a good girl. Poor thing was abandoned at a pet store, because she was "too old" for the owners. The store was going to euthanize her, because putting her in a cage between a doorbell and a parrot and right at the door... Then reaching into the cage and trying to rip her out led to her biting someone. Go freakin' figure. I said "If I can get her to my car, can I have her?" and ended up spending about a year getting her to trust me. Had her for about 7 years. She couldn't meow. Just go "Aaah!"

[Fark user image image 425x566]

We went by the foster and let Goober Pea have a look and pick her new sister out, and in two weeks, we will welcome a new Monkey to the SpaceMonkey family!   Shes the one in the left, the one with the black tail.  Her name will be Trixie, so we will have Chis named Tulip and Trixie.

We have to wait two weeks so she can get her second round of puppy shots, but we are guaranteed her because we went on ahead and put up they adoption fees.  We are getting her from the same adoption agency we got Goober Pea from.

Gaaaahhhhh!!! So cute!!!! I can't wait to see pictures of Trixie and Goober Pea together! They're gonna be such a pair!!!

I should have taken pics of them facing off and chasing each other around the room.  Then the little pup promptly jumped in my lap and stayed there.  I don't  talk this way often, but my heart melted into a puddle.....🥰🕉

Nope, not yet anyway!  The current mess is caused by a series of hard calendar deadlines because this year there are supposed to be NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments.  The company needs a bunch of special-purpose software to be working before these tournaments start.  Fortunately, it's almost all OK thanks to a number of late nights.  "I just uploaded stuff and the entire website stopped working!" is not something you want to hear at 4pm on a Friday.  We fixed it, but it took a while.

Okay, so something kindof cool just happened. My landlord has had a '69 vette for many years (not this one) that has been parked in the carport out back. I've lived here 19 years, and it was pretty much rotting into the ground then. He originally was saving it for his grandson in hopes that they could restore it, but the kid was never interested, and pretty much forgot about it.

He recently found a guy that wanted it to restore it for his Dad that has MS, and used to have the same year car when he was younger. He and Don got the paperwork finished today, and the tow truck just finished pulling it out, and loading it up! So, the 'vette is gone! It's going to be weird having that big empty space out there, but I can clean it up now. I told Don we should put in a dance floor. :)

The Little Gas Molecule trusts Daddy when he says everything will be fine... eventually.  We are seeing the stress in the "clingyness", aways with Daddy, Mommy or both.  Then there is being quicker to frustration than "normal".  Not that any of us are what would be considered within "normal" by typical people.

I tend toward complete denial even though I am aware of it to minimize my stress/distress levels.  Which is why I am waking up once or twice a night when I'm not taking antihistamines in the evening.  Taking an hour or more to fall asleep is "normal", well for me and the LGM, at any rate.

We will make it through this... somehow.

*I believe that "normal" is a myth perpetrated by the majority of individuals with "normal", aka typical, neurochemistry.

You're right about "normal".

I have a book around here somewhere called "Neurotribes" that was really good. It's basically all "hey - we're all different/ neurodiverse, so let's deal" while leaning heavily into autism to educate and enlighten. I highly recommend it to everyone and if I ever find it again and you want to read it, let me know. I'll happily bundle it up and send it out.

Ten years, damn, time flies way too fast.
We did have a hell of a time while it lasted, great memories.

I'm trying to find some photos. My previous hard drive ate up many years of my life in photos but I think I can dig up some.

I still have all the emails that were sent when we were planning this. After I talked to Sherpa last night, I read through many of them and laughed until I cried.

One thing I'll never forget is how so many people from all over the US and other countries, got together on this crazy website, opened their hearts, gave love, blessings, best wishes, virtual hugs and kisses, then donated $$, to make it all happen. It was amazing. Not one person outside of Caturday had any clue of what I was talking about when I told them what was going on.

I wish Q J was still here to join us today.

I'll see if I can find some photos.

Yes, you can microwave them, but they come out tough and chewy. I've found that a simple toaster oven is superior (but even then, after reading the cooking directions, drop the recommended temperature about 50°, and reduce the cooking time by about 2 minutes. Don't forget to turn them halfway through. Otherwise they will go splat and the filling will drool all over pan and you will have empty crusts).

Yes, I DO love my pizza rolls ☺

Had an email from one of our newbies this morning asking what was up.  I nearly cried when I opened the document and saw what happened.

I had a backup on my own drive though and this time I added it to the network as a PDF.

F*cking numptys I work with.

So you're good though, right?

As in, THANKS TO YOU, you guys are good?!?!

Yep.
I had a backup THANK ALL THE GODS.

and this time what i put in the shared network is a PDF so hopefuly the chuckleheads can't do it again.

I totally sent an email to staff that was all "um, can we all be careful with save when using the shared training documents?  Something happened Friday and the manual got wiped out"

GRRR

I would be asking why nobody noticed this earlier? Not noticing = not doing it in my book.

It happened friday afternoon.  the other staffer emailed me late friday after I'd clocked out.
I remedied it before 8am on Monday.

There wasn't much earlier it could be noticed or fixed.

I just looked them up and they are stupid expensive through Amazon. We're talking twice the price of buying them at the store! All of my local Walmarts carry them and they are covered by Food Stamps, so it's really best if I pick them up myself - once I figure out which ones  I like, of course!

Thank you, though. I just cringe at the huge markup Amazon has on those. Damn near gave myself a heart attack looking at it.  You'd THINK they'd be able to afford to give their employees a thriving wage or at least an adequate pee break once in a while, but there we'd go with our 'thinking' again.

We have a similar situation at my job.

A coworker is being pressured to come back in,  yet her dept isn't real following the proper protocols.  She's has my and another coworkers assistance drafting emails asking for clear guidance on Covid policy etc and it falls on deaf ears.

Coworker told me the other day there was talk about disciplinary action against her.  Which would TOTALLY blow up on their faces with her (our) union as she has carefully documented everything.

Sigh.

I think this where all of my problems are heading to. My boss says we can not come in if we feel uneasy, but then absolutely runs off the rails when I explain why I needed to stay home one day a couple of Mondays back: bad weather forecasted that day, our workplace under a one week mandatory lock down due to a Covid surge, nobody but staff allowed into the building, so much time needed for me to prep for an instructional three hour Zoom meeting that afternoon. I thought my request was prudent and reasonable. Not my boss. Next day he sends out a long email about taking off, letting him know  (I did! The Saturday before!) no time off will be given unless pre-approved, we have to find our replacement to cover our hours (I have one other co-worker. Plus, that is your job), etc. What a bunch of BS.

I have no clue yet...

Morning, everbuddy!  Bacon (BACON!) bits and cheese scramble, hash brown pattie, and chocolate syrup coffee.

And a fresh pack of mint-flavored Oreos!

Morning!

I'm thinking Panera's cheese souffle and some apple slices. I am looking for an excuse to leave the house, if only for a moment, so I shall go and discover which apple varieties they have at the market near my house right now and then hit the Panera drive thru!

yay! Breakfast time!

Well I never was tested for it, even though I was in forced quarantine from work just after Thanksgiving.  I still haven't felt horribly sick, and I'm thankful for that.
That being said, I just received my first vaccine dose (Pfizer) 3 hours ago.  I feel a little run down, but nothing bad yet.  For the most part, it was similar to the flu shot I get every year.  Not a bad experience at all so far.  Ill be fine as long as my boys take care of me.

Got it! They all look safe for me, too! I was reading the labels and realized that a single one of these probably has more nutrients than I usually (but not always) get all day. Even if I don't live them, I'll pretend they're Super Juice!!! or something and drink at least one per day.

I put the banana flavor and the mocha flavor in the fridge, so I can try one of those first. Mocha has caffeine in it, too. Nice! That might be  breakfast. 😁

bobug: SpaceMonkey-66: Well, its been another crazy week, hope everyone is doing well.  Hard to have emergency eye surgery for two retinal tears monday.  Was hosting a zoom presentation last friday, we are ditching Solarwinds for our IT shop and an replacing it with Microsoft SCOM.  About halfway through, in my right eye, I saw exactly what you'd see if you dropped a drop of ink into a glass.  But, it was blood from a burst blood vessel.  As mentioned, my retina tore in two places.  Should heal though and the beaucoup specks/floaters in my eye should go away in a few weeks.  Something ✝🕉 told me to get it checked out fast, glad I did.

Bertha. (The F100, if u don't know) is getting her side pipes removed today as one of them blew a baffle straight out the back.  End of an era, they've been on there since 1976.  Decided to drop in MagnaFlows and exiting in front of rear wheels with multiple chrome tips per side.  Should look pretty good.  Nice that it looks like the stim checks we are getting next week should cover it.

Wow. So glad they could fix it. Any idea why your eye shredded? Solar winds isn't that bad!

The eye, I asked the doc about it and he told me that it comes with growing older.  Wasnt anything i did or didn't do to cause it (shrug).  Considering that my fav hobby is rc helis, I was pretty worried about loss of eyesight.  But, it should heal fine.

As for Solarwinds, it wasnt a bad product overall, but their Support wasnt for shiat.  The decision came down from our Security team anyway.  SCOM does far better monitoring DFS Replication backlogs, etc anyway.  That's important as we use virtual desktops extensively.

Verified today from HR that im retiring in 21 months (Dec 27, 2022)!!!!!!  There's a light at the end of the tunnel, and its not an oncoming train....

Greetings, Caturday friends! This week has sucked so bad, work-wise, that I had a meeting with my boss yesterday and she's backing me up 100%. Going to shift some projects around so I can focus on the important stuff without missing any smaller deadlines or going crazy (lately, it's been both).

I did manage to pop into Woofday and saw Riche had posted good news there. I'm glad things are easing up a bit, even if they're not completely solved.

funny thing about soylent, when it first started it was just powder then they started doing the plain bottles then started adding flavors. They sell it from the website, soylent.com  .  Also it is sold at amazon, wallys store and 7-11 amongst others. on subscription its around 2.65 for the plain and the flavored is a bit more. I personally buy 36 bottles a month or 3 cases of 12 and 7 packages of the powder.( roomie just likes the plain so he gets the bottles I do the powder so its like half a cup to 8 oz water/milk more or less. so that is 400 calories per container and 1/5th of everything you need to live. oh gawd I sound like an influencer!!! so its not cheaper than eating, however for me, my diabetes and other issues, it helps maintain my nutrition without blowing my calories out of the water and I dont have to cook one meal a day.

[Fark user image 600x315]

At this point, you'd think that the higher-ups in organizations would have clear protocols established about things such as this. Perhaps I am oversimplifying things. But sheesh, Covid-19 prevention has been part of our lexicon for a year, and it seems like ensuring safety issues in the work place would be part of SOP.
I hope you don't have to deal with any of the slobs up close any time soon.

I've come to the realization that each department here is more or less on their own and even with clearly issued guidelines, protocols and supplies at the ready, enforcement is where we lose the battle. Since nobody has my back and assumptions have been made about my willingness to put myself at risk, I have no choice but to start saying "NO" and backing it up with the very guidelines nobody wants to follow. Talk about protecting my shell........

after my last heart attack they did a stress test of my heart, essentially I just laid there and they used a sonogram and EKG to monitor my heart and injected me with Atropine to speed up my heart. well it worked but I had a rare side effect. I began to shake uncontrollably, I could have doubled for a paint shaker. freaked the doctor and the nurses that were monitoring me. at first they thought I was scared but I was calm as could be and told em so. they stopped the test and made sure I was ok and had stopped trembling before sending me home. I have weird reactions to certain things, nerves not quite where they are supposed to be and reactions to things you are not supposed to react to. I keep telling the doctors that, they dont believe me until it happens.

I usually do the steam/braise/boil thing (season the water with garlic and onion and whatever) and then dip in melted butter or mayo (one of the few ways I'll eat mayo). However, these guys are JUMBO jumbo and I don't want us to get tired of them before mom and I - but mostly just I can nom them. I thought we'd ask for ideas to maybe switch it up a little. So like post-cooking things/serving suggestions, I guess.

Gracias!

/they were on sale for $1.50 each and  are JUMBO JUMBO GINORMOUS Jumbo!
//they're about 3 or 4 "hungry RWDA" sized servings each! 😲
/// that's a lot of yummy nommy to try to not get tired of eating

SpaceMonkey-66: Well, its been another crazy week, hope everyone is doing well.

Got Bertha back about a half hour ago, sure looks different and sounds great.  We want with the Flowmasters.  Has a nice throaty growl that sounds really nice.  The double tips whistle a tad at low rpm, but that'll go away as time progresses.   Mrs SM-66 really loves it, we don't have to shout anymore to hear each other. ✝☮🕉

Real Women Drink Akvavit: Timid Goddess: A small windfall means we will have shelter from when we have to leave the house til we have a new place.

She deserves mad props for it - as you do for giving ...

Check thrift stores for bread makers. I see them clogging up the top shelves all the time, usually for about $25. Should be about time in the kitchen trend cycle for  sous vide immersion wands to start popping up in thrift stores too, if you ever wanted to try sous vide cooking. I'd not be surprised to see Ninja products any time now, too.

ProcrastinationStation: Very much hoping that RWDA is feeling well enough to come play with us this Caturday....

In the meanwhile, she posted an update to her page:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/sylvia039s-cancer-survival-fund

She's loving the food gift cards, and working hard to get her nutrition (and weight) up...

And as expected,  she's impatient with recovery and wants to be up and running, like NOW.

I'm trying - with everything! Weight for me is just weird. I can go from crazy skinny to crazy chunky and back again all in less than a month. Nutrition is HARD though. I mean REALLY hard. I have food allergies, dietary no-nos and then of course I am incredibly fussy so even if it's something I generally like I won't always eat it because "OMGs. There was a piece of fat in that. *gag*" or "something was chewy. I don't like this to be chewy" or "It looks weird" or "something smelled funny on the freeway last week" or any other number of things that will put me off of a particular item for days or weeks. Pieces of fat in meat have driven me to vegetarianism for months at a time in the past. I have no idea why I am that way, but I am - and there's not a whole hell of a lot I can do about it.

I usually have to 'trick' myself into eating something that is  good for me/high nutritional value that I am rather iffy about by pairing it with something horrifically unhealthy that I love. It's hardly noticeable to most people  because I've dealt with it for so long. They just  think I've got an especially odd diet.  Which I guess I do.

Difficulty: chemo made me even weirder about food, especially since some of the side effects related to taste  never went away. o.0 Maybe some day? That everything tasting like salty plastic thing that I get can be hard to work around when it's really bad. :-(

Just eating is exhausting, especially  right now (understandable), though usually it's preparing the food and then trying to eat it that really knocks me down. I can't always do both and I don't always know what I can and cannot eat anyway, so it's easier to just have more coffee - though I sometimes use coffee shop trips to "trick" myself into eating some of their more nutritious offerings of food.

This is why the gift cards help so much. It gives me a lot to choose from and I don't have to worry about having the energy/health to make the food as well as eat the food, once I figure out what I actually can tolerate that day. It also feels like a treat, so I am building myself up psychologically to eat something, even if I don't want to eat at all. I've even said I'm going for  "treats" here, when  most people would just call it "lunch".

I'm pretty sure I've been battling an especially odd eating disorder most of my life and now I've got sickness adding to the problem. It will take some effort to get my nutrition under control and back where it needs to be, but if I can stay awake long enough, it can be done! lol

I was eating an apple and a Panera cheese souffle (again! my new favorite thing for the week!) earlier while trying to catch up. I ate half of each, carefully put the other half away for lunch - and then fell asleep because I ate. lol But the apple was good for me, so yay! Nutritional baby step achieved!

Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Happy Carturday everbuddy!

I remember the Alien/Vanna tour!  It was the weekend of the Binghamton St Patrick's Parade.  Arrived at the motel around two in the afternoon half in the bag, and left at two or three AM in the same condition.

It was Domari, Cretin Bob, me, Alien, and one or two local lurkers I think.  Best damn time I had in BungnTurd, even if I did pass out at the Ground Round!

Alien?  If you're reading this, please know that I forgive you guys.  Even though you DID stick me with the check!!

sherpa18: Ten years ago, one of the Caturday regulars - AlienNarrr!

I remember that!
I think I was still lurking then...

And by gone, I mean the bossman told everyone they had to do a mandatory training by the end of the month and everyone decided friday afternoon was the day to do it.  Someone saved over the entire manual!

Had an email from one of our newbies this morning asking what was up.  I nearly cried when I opened the document and saw what happened.

I had a backup on my own drive though and this time I added it to the network as a PDF.

I would be asking why nobody noticed this earlier? Not noticing = not doing it in my book.

It happened friday afternoon.  the other staffer emailed me late friday after I'd clocked out.
I remedied it before 8am on Monday.

2 things to know ahead of time. It has slow release sugars so no spiking and the second there is nothing natural about this. it is NOT organic by any measuring stick. but I drink my dinner, used to do it for breakfast, dinner works better as it actually lets me feel full till I got to bed with maybe a light snack and I am good till morning. and I have been waking up to blood sugars in the 90 to 110 range consistantly.  part of that is using ozempic. that causes your digestion to slow down = eating less. lost 10 lbs. YMMV at least its consistant in its calories and effects.

Wait, I thought he was the one who lived with the neighbors?

no...thats orange boy Sylvester who lives with the on and off again couple next door...they are on again and I saw her bring home and carry in several boxes today....I'm guessing the same boxes she carried out when they split up in January...

dennishiding: Timid Goddess: Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Timid Goddess: Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Question - is there such a thing as Brussels Sprouts soup?

Immediately thought A) NO!
and B) Ruhlman's Cream of Anything soup, simmer 1 cup of anything, in this case Brussels sprouts in 1 cup of broth or water.  Add 1 cup dairy and a slurry of 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, blend and/or strain if desired.

That actually sounds good, gonna have to try it.

If it turns out good, will have to patent recipe.  I'll cut you in for 60%.

As long as you don't try to give me 60% of the soup.  Mom kinda ruined the idea of even trying them by frequently cooking them in vinegar, not a scent I found appetizing at all!  I am not certain I have the slurry right, might be a teaspoon or a tablespoon per two cups of cooked soup.  Too much cornstarch, it will be pudding, not enough will be too thin to be a good cream of soup.

Obviously, taste and adjust until delicious.

Hmmm, I'll never really catch up.   I confess that I originally was a bit unsympathetic toward this soup request.   I mean vegetable soup.... microwave vegetables, heat up water, add to ramen noodles let sit, add seasoning packet... tada soup.    Not really a favorite but sometimes fancy it up with some of April's chicken or tuna left over from Autumns tuna water.   Might even start by saute onions and then add whatever other vegetable is on hand.

Then again, maybe I've been living on my own too long to offer cooking advice. :)

(Thought I typed this once already, so sorry if its a duplicate.)

It is! I've seen it before, and Paleryder69 has used  it for some time now to support his nutrition so I've heard good things about it. He sent me six different flavors to try, so I'll be adding the best ones to my standard shopping list.

I've got some cancer nutrition books, cancer nutrition cookbooks, offers of nutritional support counseling and whatnot. None of it  works if I can't actually eat the stuff either due to my allergies, chemo side effects or just me having my weird problems with food. Soylent can help fill that gap as I  seem to be OK with at least one of the flavors so far. I also find the name somewhat amusing. :-)

I should try and snake the tub but it is deeper than 20 feet. Probably one of my hairy neighbors clogging the drain.

F-that! Went that route a year or two ago. Had to pull the basement toilet (no other way to do it) and ran the Home Depot auger out to the street or the end of the coil. I don't know which came first, but it worked.

But good on you for taking care of yourself in the face of what sounds like laziness.

I spent yesterday out galavanting to fabric stores, so now I am going to have to catch up with my chores. So, laundry, piggy cage cleaning and prepping his cart for return, grocery shopping, (we are out of bread!!) and some meal planning for next week, in case the 2nd covid shot makes me sick.

That's classic cat behavior right there.  Most of the cats my family's had would do exactly that.

In a slightly odd turn of events, a tvtropes editor wrote an entry that referenced a thing I wrote about 22 years ago. (Open the "Video Games" entry in that page and then search for "Zangband" to find it.)  I have created and written a large number of things, but the Zangband copy I have written has more legs than any code or copy I've written for commercial products.  *shrug*

Real Women Drink Akvavit: I have two jumbo artichokes! Mom is going to help me prepare them, if necessary. So how do you guys like fresh artichokes?

I usually do the steam/braise/boil thing (season the water with garlic and onion and whatever) and then dip in melted butter or mayo (one of the few ways I'll eat mayo). However, these guys are JUMBO jumbo and I don't want us to get tired of them before mom and I - but mostly just I can nom them. I thought we'd ask for ideas to maybe switch it up a little. So like post-cooking things/serving suggestions, I guess.

Gracias!

We use artichoke hearts in a lamb stew that is tomato based. I like to serve it on Orzo. You could also make your own "italian dressing" and marinate some of it!

paleryder69: lol they put it on the table with the little rug on it underneath bathia's envelope!! this is sooo fun to see things like this happen!!

For some reason when I'd put "please leave on small table near front door and ring video doorbell" in the notes for food deliveries, most of them would ring the bell and then just .... stand there. Holding the food. Looking for the table that was right there.

Since my mom put that little rug out to air dry, they're all suddenly putting deliveries on the little table.  That little rug may have to stay right there. Apparently the little table is invisible without it!

CrankyAndi: Ellie is NOT happy with me.

[Fark user image image 850x1133]

YAY! At the car stuff, ELLIE! Mommy is trying to help you! at the Ellie stuff. I wish we could get them to accept that and then let us do that.

When I first got home my mom was trying to give Earl her meds, but at evening med time I was sleeping and Earl was not about to leave my side. She missed a couple of days of her evening dose because of that, which no one told me at the time or I would have done my part by making sure I was awake at Earl's evening med time. 🙄

Silly cats! We ALL need to take our meds and eat our foods! It's how we stay (or get) healthy!

/what is Mississippi roast?

mtpalms: Still CUOTT, 4 moar pages to go.....

RWDA, you would make a swell travel writer, because you would write about the experience and journey, not the place. There could even be a little $$$ in it, I know I would subscribe! I live near a popular national park about 2 hours east of LA, so maybe that is close enough for a short trip? And living 10 minutes from the entrance, I can 'camp' in the comfort of my own bed. :-)

I am so looking forward to being on the SOAS tour!!!

Happy Caturday Everybuddy! (Because I most likely won't have time to post again today)

When I was first falling ill in a way that I felt rather strongly, but was stubbornly still pushing myself, I had to cut my  work travel down to about 2,000 miles per month. In other words - if 2,000 miles per month of driving is a "cut" from normal to me, then it's a safe assumption that if it's in California it is "close enough" for me. :-D

Some parts of Nevada are pretty close in RWDA miles, too. I am only about 2-3 hours away from Reno, ya know.

I have a friend who lives near Yosemite that is just dying to show me around the park, so I am def heading that way for one of my first, if not my very first non-day/multi-day trip. I'm currently trying  to find a good FB page or website or two or ten or whatever with robust hostel information - so not 'brand specific' (like Hosteling International and  whatnot). Hostels tend to be cheaper than hotels/motels and you meet more people. As I'll most likely only be working part time when I go back to work, I need to keep things cheap, but I also need decompression space. I'm gathering information right now, so hopefully I'll get it figured out, eventually. Until then, I can take day trips to San Francisco and wine country and whatnot and see if I am well enough and/or build my stamina so that I can determine *when* I can start taking longer trips like up to Oregon and Washington and eventually down to Arizona and then the South like Oklahoma and Texas and whatnot.

And you're right - the getting there is just as important if not more important to me than my actual destination much of the time. I like being able to stop and say "Hi" to any horses or goats or whatever that happen to be leaning on fences near rural freeways and byways and check out farmer's markets and small towns. I like just grabbing a snack and a coffee or iced  tea and sitting on a curb or a porch and chatting up the locals. I like just going out and ~being~ and ~seeing~.  Just letting my own humanity gently guide me on a grand adventure, even if I don't make it any great distance as far as a map is concerned.

I  want to figure out how to set up a blog or site or something with a "tip jar" (or ask someone else to do it/help me with it) so I have somewhere to share my travels and maybe help fund them as well. I know I want to share the things I see and people that I meet. I think a lot of people have forgotten that we're all human beings and while  we can all believe and act in  very different ways, we're really not all that  different when it comes to our basic concerns and wants and needs. Just getting out and talking to people with an open heart and open mind, with no intention to change theirs about anything - just listening, learning and making sure that other person knows you recognize their basic humanity is just as precious as your own - well, can you imagine if everyone did that?

It can be super scary to talk to people openly, kindly, gently. Especially if it's with people you've been conditioned to fear or mistrust or view as 'beneath' you. I don't see how you can even recognize the humanity of someone  you view as flawed in such a serious way that they need some sort of 'help' so they'll view things the  "right" way - which is of course 'my way' for so many people (and I see that last bit a lot! it is absolutely shocking how much I bump into that attitude). But! - if I can do  it, so can someone else. Of course I want to share what happens when you recognize your fellow humans as humans first and simply let them *be* and *believe* differently than you, even if it doesn't go so well every time. I hope that others can learn from my mistakes (of which there will be many, I'm sure. lol) but most of all learn, accept and then *act* on the fact that we are ALL human  beings, including the people we may not like  very much. Not agreeing with someone, not liking someone - these do not remove any part of their humanity. I really wish more people could understand and accept that. The world is much more full, more beautiful and more hopeful when you do.

So, yeah - the road trip end destination is really just a bonus sometimes. :-)

Here, have some exploratory kittens!

My sourdough starter had a baby, it is all grown up now it's name is Sue. Does anybody think they would like to try out some homemade sourdough? As long as it is less than a three day shipping and it's not freezing where it's cool I get should be fine. I would need whoever wants it to pay for shipping, I'm sorry we are very broke :-(

You can actually dry some starter out on a piece of parchment paper, crumble it up, pop it in a plastic bag and then mail it off that way.  The recipient just needs to rehydrate it and then start feeding the starter.

I'd forgotten about it because it's been a while, but you should check out The Fresh Loaf. Last time I was hanging around the  joint there were a lot of  zero waste bakers floating around and plenty of ideas and recipes for sourdough discard. It's definitely full of bread enthusiasts who love themselves some .... well, bread. lol
