Dammit, I forgot about this.

I kinda wonder if that's why Deanston switched over to Vanilla Oak? Maybe that was a low-selling variant that had already been imported?

I don't know about Deanston specifically, but I learned a few years ago that Bushmills was looking into alternative sources of barrels, as the port barrels they've traditionally used were becoming difficult to source in large enough numbers.  I suspect the supply issue was related to Brexit, but the Bushmills employee I spoke to would neither confirm nor deny that.

I know that they have been experiencing with barrels used for sherry and for various California wines (which are often aged in oak barrels with naturally-occurring vanilla-like flavor compounds), but for the foreseeable future, you'll probably only be able to purchase any of those experimental whiskeys at their tasting room in Northern Ireland.

The US and the EU are still in the middle of a decades-long argument over tax subsidies for aircraft manufacturers.

Basically Boeing v. Airbus.

Airbus gets explicit money from the EU. Boeing says this is not fair. Airbus points out all the government contracts. Boeing says that's not the same. Airbus disagrees.

I was told the Mexican Chinese Scots were going to pay the tariff, which isn't a tax at all because Congress has to approve taxes (otherwise it would be useless, I'm told).

W00t!  I'd forgotten all about this. And I'm out of Irish whiskey.  Guess I should wait a few weeks for the price differences to percolate through; I can get by with tequila and rum and Scotch and homebrew beer until then.

I dunno how long Bushmills is aged but someone would have to be very psychic to know Brexit was about to happen 6-8 years ago when that Deanston started to get aged.

/Also I just discovered it's "virgin oak" not vanilla.

The conglomeration of all the aerospace companies down into entities that essentially don't compete with each other has made the world a much more boring place.

Bring back british aerospace and the avro arrow!

Real American will still drink Fireball.

Fireball was "lets drop a piece a candy into shiatty whiskey" marketing ploy.

Nothing seeing all the big men MAGATS at the bar doing chilled Fireball shots and Mich Ultralight.

You see better drinking in gay bars.

As well it should. Trumps tariff war was a real loser by a realloser for a bunch of real losers, apparently

2021-03-04 4:55:44 PM
I'm sure the price will inch down as old inventory sells off.  I'm sure, because there's so much charity in selling a product that figures into so much pain and death and hangovers and family aberrations.  Trump's dad owned saloons and brothels.  Couldn't ask for a nicer guy.

That's kinda funny. My wife and I don't drink but many times over the last few years we've both uttered, "this (non-alcoholic beverage) doesn't have enough (alcohol of some type) in it" and I've considered keeping a bottle of scotch or whiskey on hand.

/ why's all the rum gone ?

pacified: Unrelated but Airbus is the worst name ever. You build these magically metal birds that soar through the sky...  And you just call it an air bus?

The idea of the European aviation companies was to bring to market an "Airbus" capable of transporting 100 or more passengers on short or medium routes at low cost. Europe is geographically tighter than the USA was/is. "Airbus" is the term for such an aircraft being proposed in the 1960s.

And tax breaks. Washington state gave Boeing a bunch of tax breaks that Airbus labels as unfair government subsidies. I think Washington state tried to say "Those tax breaks are available to ANY manufacturer that happens to produce widebody airplanes in our state!" and it didn't work, so they had to be reduced or unwound somehow.
