Ooof, that one was rough to watch.

Owen Wilson in "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" is supposed to be from Kentucky. No Kentuckian would ever mistake him for one. We have several different accents, ranging from Midwest to Appalachian. His would be more Foghorn Leghorn to Penelope Pitstop.

I was gonna mention that was a spot on choice.  Cheadle is an amazing actor, but I guess even he can be miscast.

I'd also mention Tom Cruise's Irish accent in Far and Away, Reese Witherspoon's accent in Vanity Fair, and every American in that horrible film Holmes and Watson.

I story I read or heard was the go-to dialect coaches in Hollywood up through the early 1980s, like coach/character actor Robert Easton, were amazing but the new go-to coaches from the late 80s-on were terrible. A lot of bad Southern accents supposedly resulted from using coaches that made all their actors sound the same despite where in the South the characters were supposed to be from.

Not for nothing but it is also just...hard to do. It takes a lot of effort to really 'wear' an accent like top actors do. In most cases, your average movie watchers do not care if it is accurate or a stereotype, just as long as it is serviceable to the plot/story. That's how you get Costner in Robin Hood, Cruise in Far and Away, etc etc.

I can put up with bad accents.  But there are two that drive me nuts, because they are the same farkin' accent.

"Vikingspeak" on Vikings and "Belter Cockney" on The Expanse.

Great shows (except for Vikings after Travis Fimmel left) but damn, get a coach for the people that have to make that shiat up.

Let's be honest: There is Kevin Costner in Prince of Thieves and in JFK and then there's everyone else. I love Kevin Costner but they should just let him act without attempting an accent. Shiat, it worked for Clark Gable. He refused to attempt a Southern accent in Gone With The Wind and no one gave a shiat.

I am going to have to object to your classification of Holmes and Watson as a "horrible film". Such a label wrongly implies that it is worthy of being considered a "film".

I liked The Postman, but he needs an editor who will stand up to him. There's a lot of (nice) scenery porn that doesn't help the flow of the film.

Belter Creole is a full Conlang, but I agree it's not well used in the series.

Maybe what they missed while converting it to the screen was the context component. But it is well used to distinguish social class.

They also did well with how Belter body language is different, how condescending they all are, and their absolute obsession with environmental systems.
