Loefler ran a virulently racist campaign to keep the Senate seat her 500 million net worth got her appointed too. Thankfully, she lost, and now has lost her ownership of the Atlanta Dream.

I love that the WNBA now has a team owner who's a black woman - Renee Montgomery. Even better that she's an activist, a former player, and the woman Loefler refused to even meet.

There's a movie in there, and it would be a good one.

But this story isn't getting the media attention it should be. That's because it took place in the WNBA. Sexism is a hell of a drug, and it's a damn shame because this is a story for the ages.

Maybe because the story is now 6 days old. It was covered on CNN & MSNBC, at least.

I feel like it also might be because Loffler lost.  Cause I feel like this saga was gaining momentum and then Loffler lost and everyone decided 'Ok, we don't need to care about things related to this now'

Or, or, it could also be about sexism.

Talk to your female basketball fan friends and see what they know about the NBA.

Then talk to your male basketball fans and see what they know about the WNBA.

We don't need other reasons. Sure, they exist, but the reason of sexism definitely exists and is very significant, and downplaying that is as wrong as downplaying racism.

I'd say it's more about apathy.  The WNBA is pushed and pushed hard, but people don't really care.  I watched a top ten plays of the decade for the WNBA and few of those plays would make the high light reel for a college game, much less an NBA game.

The last year I could find data for the league lost 12 million on a revenue of about 60 million.  The league is propped up by the NBA and bullied the better (and more financially successful on its own) league out of existence a few decades ago.

The reason people don't care is because of sexism. Our society pushes the idea that women's sports are less significant, less important, less exciting. That's why people don't care, because women's sports are being judged against the default that is men's sports. Men are the default and women only exist with respect to the standards that men set.

The reason (some) people don't care is it is less exciting.  It's not that they're being judged against mens sports, it's that they're being judged against every entertainment option out there.  Tennis is a perfect example that disproves your theory.  Women's tennis is often more exciting than men's.  Is it "better"?  Debateable, but not really.  The best female tennis player would not be a top 100 men's player, but the product is still exciting.

I'm not so sure. Rehash the same 5 arguments endlessly without ever convincing anyone to change their opinion seems like it would be a big part of the Sports tab too, there has to be a reason politics is compared to team sports so frequently.

This. It's kind of hilarious to see someone pick "the wnba is just as good a product as the nba and it's sexist that basketball fans prefer the nba" as a hill to die on. Any sport where "be freakishly tall" is a prerequisite is not going to lend itself particularly well to female athletes because women are not as tall as men. No amount of handwringing is going to undo the millions of years of evolution that gave the y chromosome positive effects on long bone growth and muscle development.

Basketball is especially brutal when it comes to levels between the sexes.  With tennis, hockey, soccer you would have to be a fairly decent rec league player to measure up.  In basketball anybody who saw serious playing time on a high school varsity level would be able to compete in the WNBA.

Yep. I believe the wnt (soccer) scrims against high level high school clubs for example. On that note I watch the us wnt more than the mnt because they are more fun to watch.

Hockey and soccer are good examples imo because the women's sport actually ends up looking a little different, in hockey the women's sport doesn't have checking but there's still excellent technical skating and stick handling on display, I wish the nhl had a women's affiliate that was marketed as well as the wnba. Soccer has less emphasis on raw speed to my eye in the women's sport and it's way more physical imo, less flopping.

Women's hockey:  exciting.  Women's tennis:  exciting.  Softball:  enjoyable.  Women's soccer:  exciting.  Women's basketball:  boring.  There's a reason why tennis and soccer can exist without being propped up:  they generate enough interest to actually be financially viable.  It's not that people don't want to see women compete in athletic competitions, it's that they want to see them compete in athletic competitions that are more exciting than watching paint dry.

There are several women that play in my hockey league.  It isn't a coed league, it is an "anybody of a skill level can play."  On average there are way fewer women, but (also on average) the women that do play are better than the average guy.

Hockey is also a sport where being small can be a big advantage.  I've gotten checked into the boards in front of the ref, had the checker fall to the ice and had a penalty called on me.  What can you do?  Most of them played some college hockey and they're farking quick and their stick skills are amazing...especially to someone who started playing in their mid 30s.

There's a lot of truth to this. It's not sexism. It's entertainment. As mentioned lowering the nets? I have no idea if that's viable.May not be a bad idea. We call it poutine (I know it's not the same. FFS).
I seriously like curling. Once you know the rules...and have a general idea of the strategy? It's maybe not "exciting" like hockey, or basketball....more intriguing. It's a lot more like chess than checkers.
As I said...I've been on the ice many times just farting around with co-workers(not a curler were any of us).
I'll do a quick tutorial.
For those that don't know. The ice is "pebbled". It's not flat....in between matches the iceman uses a gravity drawn ....um garden sprayer? Facing up, so they spray comes down in droplets and freeze to the existing ice. It's why every sheet is different. It's often a game of millimetres. Sweeping amounts to melting the "pebbles" (IE: water is a better lube than ice).  Good sweepers can drag a stone a good 10-20ft from where it would landed. Same with the curl. Depending on the spin. If the rock is spinning slowly? One can probably adjust the trajectory by 2 ft or more. Can never get it to curl in the other direction, but good sweepers can keep it pretty straight if the shooter F's up. Can also speed it's travel up..can't lower it. Momentum is momentum.
There's a quick primer...for the nobody cares dept.

Not only do they wish it, as every sports lover should. They would be brutal. Women's hockey is already pretty stellar, add checking? I'd watch it more. People should watch women's hockey. Due to sheer size, etc, they could never compete in the NHL, or even men's world's.
Although, I'll venture this. The fact of no checking almost makes them superior. It's almost skill against skill. Not whose the biggest....each play follows through to end. Noone gets taken into the boards. (Although I like that to, and the fighting.)

Pharmdawg: She still has money, and the Eye of Vecna, so she's got that going for her.

Does she have the Hand of Vecna as well? If so, how the hell did she lose her seat? Both of those items, used together, should have ensured her victory!!!

There was one all women team in our league about 10 years ago.  All of the players were the wives/gf's of NHL players (or so we were told).  They were probably the best skill team I'd ever seen at that level, but just didn't have the raw speed or the power.  Fun to play against and they were brutal cheaters.
