I found it. I saw this post ages ago and have tried to find it a few times since to share here. It's a bit of a read but worth it. If you've ever wanted to know how the Daily Mail and other tabloids get people to humiliate themselves in the press, the short answer is by being completely dishonest and the long answer is right here.

Scary, although the owners of the Daily Mail might take a hands-off approach and use the scientific magazine as a sort of hedge against the ups and downs of more conservative and tabloidish publications.

This has sometimes happened in the past. Mind you, the Daily Mail trash-talks science all the time so why should they change their politics?

It's going to be the exact opposite. They're going to use the scientific magazine to validate their crazy-ass tabloid articles. Add some editorial controls, tweak articles to allow for "The Wedge," then cite those articles when driving that wedge home in their tabloid bullshiat.

Basically, New Scientist is going to get worse than it already is, TBH.
