Pfffft. Like anyone listens to that hippy who some think was the son of an all powerful deity....

/ definitely not those who seem to use said son's teachings as a bludgeon to disenfranchise the least among us. Which is definitely in keeping with the teachings of what's his face....

FARK RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Somehow I doubt the bill prevents churches from only hiring pastors who are members of said church. They're not gonna have to hire atheists to run services. That a bona fide occupational qualification and I don't see this bill changing that. Otherwise, I see no reason why it harms anyone's freedom of worship.

He mainly wants protections for business that use the religious liberties defense to deny employment and services to gay and black people.

That's it exactly, wtf are they running? Joe Secular comes in willing to work for 1/2 what anyone else wants. But no, a cashier has to believe in God.
It's not like you have to hire him to be a minister.

And they can do just that if they are hiring a pastor or a (shudder) youth minister, or even a secretary. That is, churches can do that. If you run a for-profit business selling a product or service, then it is illegal to discriminate.

As a teacher, I can't imagine telling my right-wing students "fark you, I'm not grading your paper." Education is a human right even if I don't personally approve of someone's values. One would think the same would apply to a religious ministry, since Jesus hung out with people who were like tax collectors and Linux proselytizers (or something like that).

Mambo Bananapatch: FARK RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Sorry for shouting.

Religious freedom is a cornerstone of liberal democracy. However, it shouldn't mean telling other people how to do things. That's why secularism and church-state separation are equally or even more important.

Freedom of thought is a cornerstone of liberal democracy. Freedom of religion is bad because it promotes special protections for some thoughts over others.

When my religion dictates your behavior, there's a serious problem.

Me: My religion says you can't be gay married
Them: I don't want to get gay married
Me: But my religion is telling you what you can and can't do
Them: I'm fine with that
Me: My religion is Islam, and you also can't eat bacon
Them: SINCERELY HELD RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

It's an attempt to instill a theocracy, where you have to behave as if you were a Christian, without the effort of having to convert people one by one.

It's pronounced pacKAGE:

Religious freedom is a cornerstone of liberal democracy.

Religious freedom works in direct opposition to liberal democracy, because religion constantly fights for the right to undermine democracy in the name of asserting their personal fantasy over the lives and well being of others.

See: Abortion, homosexuality, transgenders, opposition to vaccines, opposition to science and history, so on and so forth.

This, you don't NEED religion for a liberal democracy.

In fact some of the most liberal democracies with the highest rate of happiness and well being for their people are the least religious while the most religious countries have the lowest ratings and way higher crime.

I honestly dgaf if people are religious if it makes them happy as long as it ends there, no pushing it on other people or dictating others lives,, but we don't need it for any sort of liberal democracy.

Gyrfalcon: Why are gay people trying to get hired at Baptist-owned establishments, though? Hell, I wouldn't, and I'm not even gay.

This. It's like the bakeries that wouldn't do cakes for gay weddings because of Jebus. Seems like a huge market for gay bakers or non-homophobe straight bakers to capitalize on. I'm all for equal rights but if you want to punish these people don't spend your money with them - put them out of business the old fashion way - through bankruptcy. I believe in equal rights so I don't shop at Hobby Lobby (and also this local bakery that is homophobic). I believe in small business so I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I don't believe in God so I don't go to church or donate to any religious charities. This is capitalism - the best weapon against inequality is the dollar, not a law.

It's not just gay people out there and it's not just a business, it could be a trans person and a shelter run by a  baptist ministry or something.
