Is that measured by the number of COVID deaths it causes?

No one can match the What the Farks for lunacy - at least in the ownership department.

If one wants to throw in MLS to the mix, then some of the newer teams (Orlando, Cincy) have a lower "lifetime" winning %.

But, certainly, a team that's been around for 30+ years can have the crown over some very new teams in a league that hasn't been around as long as the team in question.  I'd say in any league, need to have at least 10 seasons to get into the "worst lifetime franchise" discussion.

On another note... who is the parent of Golf Digest that this article just gets dumped onto their website for no apparent reason?

/guessing that they share a common DB with some other properties, and one can get to any article in the parents DB from any of the websites, no matter how weird that seems

I would have guessed the Chargers.  They have never won anything significant.  They have a cash poor owner who has to mooch off another owner so his team has a place to play.  They are the least relevant franchise in a city with over a dozen other franchises.  They lost 90% of their fan base to move north.

They do have a talented GM and Kroenke's stadium looks pretty dang amazing though.

40 major league franchises have never won a single championship. We can forgive the Golden Knights and maybethe Pelicans for being less than 20 years old. I'd say that's a bigger deal than regular season franchise records of teams that probably sucked more in the 70s, 80s, or other decades past.

It's worse than the Arizona Coyotes, the NHL's worst at .480.

Wait, that's barely below .500. Or does this have to do with the goofy way the NHL records wins, ties, and overtime?

Joke all you want, we've got the Lombardi trophy right now.

And the Stanley Cup

The Lions say GFY to everyone, including pre-Brady Tampa Bay.

Maybe the Toronto Blue Jays of Dunedin will win a trophy, too

You mean the 57 cases linked to the Super Bowl?  I mean, it could be the worst, but I'd like to actually see the data.

At the current death rate, the 57 cases will result in 0-1 deaths.  Seems unlikely.  Surely someone has beaten that.

The Chargers have won a lot- they've just never punched through when it mattered.

Fouts, Seau, Natrone Means, early Brees, Rivers, LDT, Merriman... they've had stacked rosters here and there.

Hmmm...now I think we have to consider that it's not that people stopped caring about sports because of the pandemic.

They stopped caring about sports because Tampa.

3 of those teams belong to Minnesota.  Yay.  The Twins can at least moneyball their way to the post season from time to time.  The Vikings have the best NFL record of any team to never win the big one.  But yeah, we really don't expect much of the Wolves.  The upside to the NBA is that you only need a couple of star players and a halfway decent bench to be competitive.  Towns is a legit star caliber player.  Edwards is looking good, they need a legit forward and to spend some time learning to play defense (they aren't making the playoffs, so why wait until then, eh?).

The correct answer is the Seattle Mariners.

Maybe all time.

But I have to argue that my Buffalo Sabres (sigh) are a very strong contender for the worst franchise in major pro sports in the last decade.  And not much prospect of getting better in the near-term either.

I doubt it includes the WHA, but it has to include the original NHL Jets because the Coyotes still count those teams in their history.

Oh...of ALL TIME, not of this year.

Don't confuse me like that, article.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that the Browns don't have the worst win percentage overall...  the ancient history of the Browns of old must help, I suppose.

I'm damned sure they're the worst of the 21st century.

How many Tampa residents (or even Florida citizens) even know what a Stanley Cup is?
