I am actually getting kinda pissed at the English language myself.

That and the lack of a specific ustedes/vosotros comparable.

Seriously. You'll never forget? Well, you should. Because it's meaningless petty bullshiat. You want to carry every insult and slight with you for the rest of your life as an excuse for your poor decisions? Go ahead, I guess. But you'd be happier if you didn't.

Reyes, who goes by the gender-neutral pronouns they/them

This needs to stop and they (not Rivkah they, but them they) need to come up with new pronouns.

I have no problems if you don't want to be called him or her and understand the current non-gender "it' is too impersonal but stop trying to hijack plural pronouns as a substitute...it's ridiculous.

It's 2021, we have billions English speakers so some of them should be able to put their useless English degrees to good use and come up with a new plural pronoun then create some sort of Survey Monkey poll and have everyone vote on it, as long is it's not "Non-gender McNongender Face"

And while I'm ranting I would like it known that Rivkah was rob a solo at the end of School of Rock, wtf was up with that.

Languages naturally evolve over time and we may well lose gendered pronouns eventually however if you try to force the issue you can almost certainly expect push back.  Language patterns and habits develop early and are really hard to change as we get older.  We can and should try to get things right in written communication and in schools but in real-time back and forth speech, the old established habits are likely to bubble to the surface.  It's a problem time will fix.

It's not a problem to be fixed. Language is always in flux and always will be. The standards will evolve likewise, but the direction is unpredictable.

I went to elementary school with the child actor that played the next door neighbor kid from The Partridge Family when I lived on Long Island back in the 70's. Nice kid. Although he seemed a bit stuck up. On the bus, everyone wanted to sit next to him because he was on a NYC soap opera.

One day he tells us he's going to be on the Partridge Family.

So the whole family moves to LA where it was filmed.

I think the show was canceled that season.

Look, I never had a problem with someones sexuality- its their business, but this is becoming insane.

We went through this already.  You are demonstrably, provably wrong.  Both through the rules of English grammar, as well as common use.  "They" as a singular term is accurate and correct, and has been for hundreds of years.

Die mad about it.  Like the grandmas that can't handle two girls holding hands, or the grandpa that can't handle a black boy with is precious white granddaughter.  You'll just be a relic that can't handle what the rest of the civilized world adjusted to in a short time.  Not everyone is a "he" or a "she".

2021-03-03 12:23:10 PM
One of the problems here is that there isn't a singular gender neutral pronoun for people in the English language (IE, "it" doesn't count).  So insisting to be called by they or them comes off as rather pompous and full of, um, themselves (especially the specific way, um, they, did it).

Lol this is a far cry from interracial dating, as much as you want it to be.  Interracial couples aren't demanding people change their pronoun, or label them prejudice.

Live your life however you want but stop blackmailing people into playing your pronoun game or else be labeled a bigot.  Your trans status is yours, no one else's.

But it always has seemed exceedingly clunky, especially since it's most common meaning is plural.  It's only used because there isn't a singular version of "they".

You don't have to be a child star to be teased and/or bullied in school, any minor thing about you that's different is all they need. Unfortunately a great number of people never grow out of it, that's why we have racist, misogynists, homo/trans phobes, and people who say you're a worthless idiot if you like a brand of beer or pizza topping that they don't personally care for.

When using it as a singular, should we also use singular verb tenses? I tend to see articles refer to individual people like "they are getting into movies..." But when "they" is used as a singular, shouldn't we say "they is getting into movies"? It might sound a little awkward, but at least it signals that the sentence about a single person and not a group.

I would say "they" has been used because a proper singular gender neutral pronoun doesn't exist so people use what they have available.  Like I said in a follow up post, it sounds very clunky to almost everybody.

But you are technically correct here so I'm done arguing about it.

So stupid for people to claim this.  Call men who want to be referred to as "he" by another pronoun like "she", and you'll spend your life getting your teeth kicked in.  Pronouns matter, and you already know it.  You're getting your panties in a twist because this one is vaguely inconveniencing you.  Like the people who biatch about paper forms that don't handle same sex marriages.  We have gendered pronouns, and more than two genders exists.  This is fact of existence, and as a society we're done acting like it's not the case.  Deal, or live as a relic.

Geotpf: But it always has seemed exceedingly clunky, especially since it's most common meaning is plural.  It's only used because there isn't a singular version of "they".

Yeah there is.  It's "they".  Dude, use Google.  Spend 30 seconds reading up on this.  We all did this last year when this ignorance made its first trip around the web.  "They" is both singular and plural.  Has been for centuries.  Been used as such for centuries.  You do it yourself all the time, you just don't realize it.

Well, first person singular is (was?) he, she, it. But It has negative connotations (there are already enough dehumanizing things hitting them that being called IT probably isn't great)

So, new ones get created, or older ones like "they" evolve to a new need

Reyes said they "felt unsafe existing" because of obsessive fans and feeling sexualized while barely a teen, including by one man who attempted to photograph them while they were in sixth grade and by online message boards in which adult men would write things like how they couldn't "wait 'til she's 18" or "the bassist is going to grow up to be hot."

I hope you're proud of yourselves, Farkers.

There's definitely more than two genders. I worked with a lady who was born with both sets of genitals.
