Y'all do realize this is a world wide pandemic above and beyond the sad little political minds trying to frame it as a local partisan problem, eh? Also of note is that these pandemic learning lessons go back for centuries of human existence and not just what a few politicians have dreamed up lately on the spur of the moment.

If you're driving and you come up to bridge and there are 100 structural engineers there who have examined the bridge. 98 tell you the bridge is unsafe and dangerous to cross and 2 say the bridge is fine, there is no problem with the bridge.

What do you do?*

Sure, let's have a repeat of the climate change conversation, where the views of a tiny number of contrarians are used to invalidate the overwhelming consensus of the larger scientific community.

Sure, it would have gone away on its own.  Along with a few million people.  Kind of like a forest fire burning itself out if there's not enough fuel density left to sustain the flames.

Since the Republican party is all about business and money, then it makes sense that they would be willing to sacrifice some of us, rather than upset the economy.

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel solemnly assured us, "We will not be able to return to normalcy until we find a vaccine.... We need to prepare ourselves for this to last 18 months or so and for the toll that it will take."

The good doctor didn't mention that, for a man of his means, "the toll that it will take" would be negligible even as it disrupted the education of millions of children, rendered their parents unemployed, and wreaked social and psychological havoc throughout society.

After COVID-19 is down to manageable levels and society opens up, will Republicans retain their newfound concern for the well-being of students, workers in the lower socioeconomic strata, and those at risk from domestic violence?

2021-03-03 10:06:28 AM
It was always about slowing the spread -- either while "emergency tested" vaccines were produced, or the pandemic lacked critical mass to continue (like this year's flu).

Running an open incubator to produce logarithmically expanding numbers of variants is the opposite of that.

...on the other side of the chasm, but that's not important right now.

The thing is, with the power of hindsight, we can look at actual evidence of what happened in countries that handled the same virus differently. Countries that tried to go for herd immunity got hit hard. Countries like the US that enacted piecemeal half measures got hit hard. Countries that locked down hard virtually eliminated the disease and are now mostly back to normal. What kind of epidemiologist looks at these outcomes thinks, "I think lockdowns may have been unnecessary?" Not a very good one, obviously.

I suspect the "come to Jesus" moment (the moment at which deniers would 'come around' and start self-quarantine) would have occurred around 16M deaths, or about 5% of the population. At 5% population loss, the 1% would find it difficult to find workers they could over-work and under-pay. Of course, you'd get the "We had no way of knowing!" talking points. And of course, "We will never let it happen again", until it does.

I always have problems with this type of data analysis and they are twofold.

Firstly, infection rates mean nothing to me.  The rate depends on how many people choose to get tested and the availability of the tests. For example, if tests are not available or they are hard to administer the number of people getting tested goes down regardless of need or want. This reduces the significance of these numbers.  If you want the infection rate to go down, do what the Chinese have just done - insist on anal swabs. I'll bet you the Chinese infection rate will drop to almost zero for obvious reasons. The only real number or importance is Covid mortality per 100K.

Secondly, Fauci's comments from March 2020 regarding wearing masks  was based on what was known at the time regarding infectivity and spread. Nobody had any great data at the time so that was his opinion at the time. He was not lying or trying to deceive. As more data became available he changed his opinion. THAT HOW SCIENCE WORKS.

Also, if you're not smart enough to stop reading at "American Spectator", stop reading when you hit "public health experts" in quotes (the first line of TFA). You should know by then that it's not going anywhere good.

Don't stay for the predictable and ignorant comparison of Covid death rates in Florida and NY/NJ. Republicans are running with that one while lionizing the asshole governing Florida.

Flu is way down which shows that our efforts do help, we just have too many shiatheads here to fully end the COVID pandemic.

considering the US never had true lockdowns...

it's like the never-maskers who say "if masks work, why do we still have the rona? cheesecake librettos."

2021-03-03 11:11:03 AM
Well, from a certain point of view, that is correct.

COVID would have gone away if we did nothing...  Immediately after it killed off so many people that there were no hosts left to spread the disease.

The human race has dealt with pandemics before.  Like, the 14th century, for instance.  We got out of it, without knowing a single thing about how it spread or what caused it.  It just effectively died out on its own because it ran out of hosts.*

So technically, they are correct.  But the important thing to note here is that the idea is to get out of this thing without a huge part of the population dying off.  If you're okay will that, then fine, do nothing, and let people die.  But the rest of the world might have something to say about that.

*note:  New information is showing us that the plague may not have, in fact, been bubonic plague.  Because there is no way that rats with fleas could travel the distances necessary to spread the disease as far as it spread.  The new thought is that it was Ebola.

There's no way most of the experts could be wrong about this.  We locked down for two weeks, and got it all under control.  We ordered untrained amateurs to wear imitation protective equipment at all times, and we pretty much wiped out covid.  I mean there's just no way that most of the experts could have gotten this wrong.  They use computers and stuff.

2021-03-03 11:32:10 AM
We are witness to how bad it has been with the US half-arseing it, what the hell kinda death toll would we have had with zero restrictions?

At the end of this I'd like to see a break down of the number of anti-vaxers that perish after the masses have their jabs.

Of course it won't change their mind because someone somewhere died after getting their jabs and that's all they will remember.
