Michelle Rodriguez - either neutral Human Ranger or Chaotic Good Human Sorcerer....both in tight armor.

...I would settle for Warlock as well.  Just don't do something stupid and make her a Dwarven Bard.

If Vin Diesel is not part of the cast by the time production starts then its safe to say the movie will fail

I don't give a crap about the BIG NAME STARS. Tell me about the movie's plot/storyline and I may give a damn.

/Forgotten Realms? Dragonlance? Greyhawk?
//it'd be kinda cool if they went with Ravenloft or Spelljammer

It's weird that these D&D films haven't just adapted classic modules, like White Plume Mountain or The Lost City, for the basis of a script.

I mean, they're classics for a reason; people love playing them and you'd have easy-to-sell callbacks that won't feel forced. Throw in a beholder or a reference to the magic mouth illustration from the original DMG, and call it a day.

It will only work if the writers, director, producers, etc understand D&D.

And how to get many hours of play, down to 2.
Much less actual character development, including skills...and not just handing them a magic weapon/wand/etc

Forget the damn thief, they're always comic relief and useless. And fighters are redundant and boring.

Focus on the magic users
As protagonists!!!
You've got tons of magic classes to work with.
Wiz, Sorcerer, Druid, Warlock, etc etc etc.

Make it a true dungeon crawl
No friggin landscape travel.
Got sick of this in LOTR.

Leave the villain to be some arch Lich...Hugh Grant loves makeup now.
Don't do what you always do...

Believe me, newer generation gets fantasy already. Slim the intros.

Head straight into the spell slinging.

Some of the timing reasons are why it would probably be better as a series on Netflix and not a stand alone movie

They could break it up in sessions like the Sherlock series, where each one is two hours long.  That gives them time to get into the characters & story, while still getting something accomplished each episode.

Honestly it would be better as a comedy series about people playing a D&D game where it pops between the in game and out of game

They should really add Tom Hanks to the cast. It would give him a chance to make up for participating in Mazes & Monsters.

Half the movie:

Wizard: "Okay everyone gather...buffs."
(cast)...(cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... ..........(cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)... (cast)...
Wizard: "There, now does anyo - "
Fighter #3: "You forgot to give me fire protection."
Wizard: "Do you *need* fire protection?"
Fighter #3: "Yes, I'm using my acid resist gauntlets."
Wizard: "Why? We're not going to deal with acid..."
Fighter #3: "Well, they also have prot. eight and I need that."
Wizard: "And you don't have anything else?  No potions?"
Fighter #3: "They only give me ten and don't last that long."
Wizard: "Ug...fine." (cast)...
Ranger: "Uhh...could you drop another haste, I was too far away."
Wizard: "How the?!  Don't you have boots?!  Fark!"
Fighter #1: "Are one of you clerics going to drop anything?"
Cleric #1: "We need the mana."
Cleric #2: "Yeah....unless you want to fight using potions."
Bard: "Nobody move...songs."
Fighter #2: "You could have done this ten minutes ago!"

Why would you want a D&D (pick your flavour) film at all? The appeal of playing D&D is that you use your own imagination coupled with that of your friends and the DM to interact and invest through *your* character with the story/scenario.

Watching a D&D film robs D&D of all of its meaning, and effectively becomes another bog-standard CGI-wank-fest fantasy film, where the D&D "element" is just using some TM/(C) names and places in some valueless marketing BS.

That's a terrible idea and would make the movie only interesting to some subset of people who actually play D&D

I saw an interview about a year ago with Joe Manganiello and he was asked about Vin Diesel being a big D&D geek.  Manangiello said something along the lines of, " He SAYS he's a D&D geek.  But I run the biggest D&D games in LA.  I play with EVERYBODY, all the big names and not-so-big names.  And I don't know anybody who plays with Vin Diesel."

If you watch Diesel on that YouTube D&D promo he did for the Witch Hunter, and you know how to play the game, you can tell he's utterly clueless.  Doesn't know what dice to roll for what, doesn't know to add ability modifiers--it's ridiculous.

/Yes, I'm a D&D geek

Well, Game Night was a surprisingly decent flick.  Directors / Writers / Cinematography are the same folks so I don't know, could be decent.  Some of the producers were also the same producers from the 2000 D&D flick, so I don't know, could be a huge flop.

I hope they don't cheese it up.
