Good. Conservation and recreation are one thing. But jackasses like this turd ruin things for everyone, and especially the environment.

Doesn't matter if they take his license away, the guy will still poach. Dude should have his hands crippled.

Poaching spree? Are those like skeet?

I love how farked up the database is right now.  Main page says this thread should have 4 comments, but not even anything from ignored users.  And then the main page says 4 (including a new post), and still nothing.

Ok I thought it was just me having issues.  I feel less crazy now.

For me, it says 6 posts +1 new ...... This is comment #5.

Also, there's no way to stop this guy from doing it again and he will. He may get smarter about it, though I doubt it, if he was stupid enough to take photos of his poaching in the first place.
I have zero tolerance for this crap.

There was much mirth in TFD when it happened, and according to Beerspill there are also ~500 permanently lost posts.

That was a year ago November. (On a morning bright and clear!)

I do take issue with the assertion that this guy will never hunt in forty-eight states. He'll never get a license to hunt in those states, but that doesn't seem to have stopped him so far.

But if you outlaw poaching, won't all poachers be outlaws?

The only problem I have with the sentence is there was no felony levied. If he had become a felon it would have made it much harder for him to rearm later and would have made simply getting spotted with a weapon a felony. That's the only way this dirtbag is likely to stop, if every time he manages to get his hands on a weapon he ends up with a few years in jail.

The two states that are not members are Hawaii and Massachusetts.

look out nenes and new england cottontails!

What, he was hunting illegally?!  Well then, I guess just tell him he can't hunt legally.  That'll do the trick!

Why are Mass and Hawaii not in on the ban? Does Hawaii have such a feral pig problem they will welcome him?

DON.MAC: Why are Mass and Hawaii not in on the ban? Does Hawaii have such a feral pig problem they will welcome him?

Mass passed a bill which will eventually see it join the compact but there's some red tape before it happens. In Hawaii one senator and one representative have been trying to get the state on board since at least 2018 but for some reason the bill has never made it out of committee, apparently someone or some group is extremely pro-poacher for some reason.

Why punish a bear?

His punishment should be to be hunted by hunters who didn't get busted for poaching in a bear costume.

fark this guy, and poachers in general. I get at least one free tree stand every year, but what kind of dumbass thinks that won't be noticed?

"Because Colorado is a member of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, Kapu's lifetime hunting ban extends to the other 47 states that are also members. The two states that are not members are Hawaii and Massachusetts."

Great. He can come on down to the Bay State and shoot as many lobster and codfish as he wants

I'm willing to bet he was selling the parts.  Nobody eats *THAT* much venison.

I've known a couple of poachers, decades ago.  They weren't bad people, just poor and rural, and the extra deer or two taken out of season helped them feed their families.   DEC officers knew it was going on, but didn't look too hard as long as they weren't going overboard.

But this guy isn't some guy with 5 kids living in a 3 bedroom house heated with a woodstove in the shadow of Nippletop mountain.

Plus, he didn't even have a hunting license in the first place:

https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/colorado-man-sentenced-for-poaching-deer-turkeys-bighorn-sheep-in-3-counties

The CPW investigation into Kapu's poaching started in October 2018, when someone called in a tip that there was a dead deer with spoiled meat in the back of a pickup truck that was stuck on a road in the Pike National Forest. Officers found the deer, which contained no tags, and discovered the truck had stolen plates.

They also found Kapu's fishing license inside the truck and discovered Kapu didn't have a valid hunting license.

So why would you go hunting without a valid hunting license, *AND* have stolen plates on your truck?

If you're selling the animal parts for traditional medicines.   A 28 year old with an Indian surname (Southwest Asian, not North American) isn't feeding his kids venison year round.

true but it sets the stage for massive fines, permanent weapon seizure, and jail time if he gets caught even carrying a gun or bow in the field during hunting seasons. In Michigan that's basically Sept-March.  At that point he may even loose the legal ability to purchase/possess a firearm.

Fark this guy and everyone like them.

Traditional medicine, maybe. More likely to make nic-nacs to sell to tourist.

dpcotta: Dude looks like the usual East Colorado Springs conservative trash but the name is throwing me. Iniki Kapu?  Dafuq?

Actually, "conservative trash" probably are the sort who first called this in.

"Conservative trash" are the sort who believe in things like fair chase.

https://www.boone-crockett.org/fair-chase-statement

https://pope-young.org/fairchase/

https://www.gohunt.com/read/skills/what-is-fair-chase

They're the ones who will pass up a 6 pointer because they want 8 points or better.   Or like me, they're the ones who will go the opposite way:  Instead of going for bigger trophies*, I decided to make it harder by going primitive:  Flintlock rifle for rifle season, and a wooden bow and wooden arrows for archery season.  I was *JUST* about to switch over to arrowheads I knapped myself when I threw my arm out coaching little league, and took a hiatus from hunting for a while.

This guy was out to get as many as he could as quickly as he could, and didn't appear to care if the meat rotted.  Plus, no license, and he was using stolen plates on his truck.

That says to me "illegal market hunter".

*The only "trophy" I have is a knife whose handle is made out of one of the antlers of my first deer.  My father surprised me with it on my birthday afterwards.

A Colorado Springs man who pleaded guilty to several poaching charges in Colorado will likely never hunt legally in 48 states, including Colorado, ever again.

Nah.

You can buy a bow without a background check, and you can also buy an inline muzzleloader, along with the ammo.

Even with a felony, this wouldn't prevent him from getting effective hunting weapons.

You can also hunt with crossbows in most states legally..I think even some states have other
traditional weapons hunting times..In Missouri someone took a deer legally with an atlatl/spear a few years ago.. Though that might have been a special permit thing..

The other thing you can buy without getting a background check or requiring a permit in any state that I'm aware of (including my very restrictive state of New York) are guns like this:

They're just as fast to shoot as a modern handgun, or nearly so, just as deadly, and if you get a Remington-style like this one, you can have use spare loaded cylinders for fast reloads.

But even if you don't do that, you can make very fast to reload "caseless cartridges" using Pyrodex pellets.  You can glue them to the base of the bullet, and wax the bullet, and you end up with something like this:

Then you can quickly reload each chamber like so:
