studebaker hoch: I wonder if any jurors that knew the first thing about semiconductors were allowed to stay.

Those are the people directing trucks around parking lots, right?

Never been much of a mac fanboi but if Intel doesn't answer the M1, they're farked. I bought a Mac mini M1 and it's a challenge to force the fan to turn on.

SansNeural: Saiga410: Nothing on what the patents were.

NXP (formerly Philips) and Freescale (formerly Motorola) merged in 2015.  In 2019 they sold off a bunch of IP.  My dual guess is 1) they wanted to raise some cash and 2) they rounded up a bunch of their IP of lesser value and off-loaded it to the patent trolls.

What's weird to me is who bought it.  Article says "VLSI Technology LLC", ultimately owned by SoftBank.  Weird part is the former American company "VLSI Technology" was absorbed by Philips in 1999 and I'm pretty sure they still own the trademarks, unless they let them lapse.  Mildly confusing.

VLSI Technology Inc. no longer exists because of the reasons you outlined.   VLSI Technology LLC is a patent troll company incorporated in 2016.  This isn't their first rodeo by any means - they're a classic "We produce nothing, we just sit on patents and sue others" incorporation.
