OdradekRex: And all at the lower end of the ASVAB.

I aced the ASVAB and I literally felt dumber after taking it.  I was 16 and on half a hit of purple haze.

It was like kindergarten entrance exam.

They're all former, I think. If they were active duty, they'd be bounced out yesterday.

Not to insult the Marines but when you a slang term for you is Jarhead maybe the organization doesn't generally attract the brightest of the bright. Antidotally I've also seen way more 50+ year old fat white guys driving a vehicle plastered in bumper stickers talking about how they where a Marine and support gun rights and republicans than I have for all other branches of the military combined.

It's not in our job descriptions, but it surely is a trait screened for in the recruitment process.

Sure, along with reduction to E-1, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and a 10- or 20-year PCS to the Leavenworth gravel factory.

Or just hang them. They were knowingly and willingly fighting alongside Nazis for the express purpose of overthrowing the US government (and some are Nazis themselves), and at least 5 people died as a direct result.

The air force has a pretty sizable number of end of days cult crazies.  Setting the Air Force academy up in Colorado Springs was a terrible idea.

My favorite inter-branch burn against marines I've heard was on Well There's Your Problem.  "I'm convinced we keep marines around in case we need to engage in an insurgency on US soil.  Like "MARINE!  We need somebody to hop in this tank that we've strapped with C4 and drive it into that checkpoint.  Gonna make a big boom."  "Oorah!  Let's do this!" The conversation plays the same in my head every time."

If they're still in IRR (Individual ready reserve) they probably can be.

As a Marine Infantryman... this saddens me.

Wish I had something witty or snarky to say.

The amount of stereotyping in this thread is expected.  Marines, just like the other services, are a slice of the general population.  Guaranteed
idiots in every bunch.

I would like to clarify that I understand what we actually DO with Marines and that it's farking nightmarish insanity that I can't even begin to imagine, and that if any Marines read this I personally thank you for your service, regardless of what you might think or do now.

The critique is towards the *very* top.  Organizationally, that training and those roles feel like they could be rolled into the other three branches, which are already integrating operations.  There's a weird political cult surrounding the Marines that serves to keep them in the shiattiest of the shiat with bad plans and bad support because the cult is so strong.

I think of my "do we really *need* Marines?" discussion like the "defund the police" discussion.  We need *the people in the Marine Corp*, but I'm not sure it's efficient or good for those people to be "The Marines".

Reader's Digest had their Humor in Uniform section. A lady wrote of being at a wedding for a Marine, and a other lady asked what the banner Semper Fidelis meant. When told it meant Always Faithful, the lady said, "Aaawww... how romantic!"

I read that when I was 12, and I still remember that every time I see Semper Fi.

Not particularly. Funny enough, 03 Marines tend to be above the 50% on the ASVAB score.
I have met some of the smartest people I know while in the USMC Infantry and had the single dumbest person I have ever met in my squad.

Yep. When I was leaving MEPS after doing rather well on the ASVAB I was running down the stairs and when I rounded the corner about a dozen marines were marching up the stairs by 2's, shoulder to shoulder each carrying a rifle. I jokingly raised my arms and said, "Woah guys, I'm on your side!" Of the bunch the lead guy just looked at me and grunted. That was my first impression and nothing I saw in 5 years of service dissuaded me from original impression of Marine mentality.

I remember saying how much the line animals in the military supported Trump and was called all kinds of interesting names because of it.

Also, if you think 1/6 was the end of it, you are missing quite a bit.  This won't be over for a long time and it will get worse.
