I work with three Christians and they all all state that it is clear that Trump is not a good person and they would never support him.   Maybe they are exceptions, I dunno.   They seem like really nice people.

For my part, I'm just incredibly angry at the injustice I see in the world. I want to PUNISH those who knowingly sin against others. Maybe that makes me slightly demonic, I dunno.

Some christians manage to somehow be good people despite their hideous beliefs.

That doesnt make the beliefs any more truthful (or less awful) than they are.

A gay man who loves Jesus lost his father, who was a very kind and progressive preacher.

The people I'm arguing with think they're both bad people for being Christian.

"Both he and my mom were Pentecostal preachers most of their lives (my mom is still with us)."

It's good that he accepted his gay son, but Pentecostals are quite nuts. I'd argue that their type of crazy is a bit more biblical than the Fark caricature of Christianity seems to think it is, but when you believe that you should live your life doing miracles and with God beaming messages into your head, but God isn't actually beaming messages into your head or doing miracles, you're going to tie your brain in knots trying to rationalize the disconnect.

Still, good on them for evolving, and I'm glad they made peace.

One would argue that those who have actually embraced the ideals of Christianity aren't the ones hating on gay people and using their religion as some moral high ground from which to look down on others and condemn their lifestyles.
I would say that true Christians are the ones who are accepting, caring, and supportive. Those who would prefer to live by Christ's example and not what is written solely in a book that has been edited so many times by POLITICAL groups that its true meaning has been lost over time.
I'm sure quite a few people would be surprised at what's actually written in the Bible if you look at verbatim translations of the old scriptures.
That said I find it hilarious to see people screeching about Christianity when its been proven almost 100% that Christ was a Gnostic which is pretty damned far from what Christians seem to believe he was teaching.

Normally, suggesting that posters on a thread 'get a room' might be an option at this point, but I suspect the room would have to accommodate 10 or more, and have a plunge pool and sauna as part of the deal...

Netrngr: I would say that true Christians are the ones who are accepting, caring, and supportive.

All Christians think they're being accepting and supportive. Some of them think it isn't caring or accepting to not call out sin that they feel is harmful. If your son beat his kids or embezzled money from seniors, would you have something to say about it? That's how homophobes feel about gay people.

My point is that you smuggle in a lot of sectarian assumptions when you define "true Christians" that way.

Netrngr: Those who would prefer to live by Christ's example and not what is written solely in a book that has been edited so many times

...And how exactly do you read about "Christ's example" outside of a book that has been "edited so many times?" That (plus the apocrypha) is literally the only documentation, unless you happen to have a Q manuscript in your back pocket. (My recollection is that the Q hypothesis has fallen out of favor anyway.)

Netrngr: That said I find it hilarious to see people screeching about Christianity when its been proven almost 100% that Christ was a Gnostic

...when did this happen? The Gospel of John is proto-gnostic at best, but I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to.

not sure if 'good' is the adjective I would use for a Pentecostal. definitely not 'smart'. they are not mormon dumb but pretty close.
if you think you found a tolerant Pentecostal you did not find a Pentecostal. these idiots handle snakes and 'speak in tongues' (read: mutter gibberish).

I'm the one on the moral high ground here.

At no point have i ever claimed that believers deserve eternal torture. Until atheists start making claims on that sort of level... we will always retain the moral high ground.

It is a central tenet of christian belief (and quite a few other faiths as well) that non-believers are tortured for all eternity in the afterlife... not only that but the belief is that they DESERVE this... eternal torture is somehow justified by their non-belief.

The atheistic view has no counter-point to that belief, its not even really possible to invent one as a thought experiment or strawman. So, while you have tried to paint atheism as just another side of the same horrible coin, that really isnt the case.

I don't have an FB account but can read it. Here it is:

Brian Stansberry
12hrs ·

My father passed this weekend. Both he and my mom were Pentecostal preachers most of their lives (my mom is still with us).He passed in peace and grace, holding his wife's hand.In these dark pandemic days that alone is so much more than many get.To their everlasting credit despite being steeped in that Pentecostal culture they welcomed my husband Phil with open arms, some 33 years ago.I will always be grateful for that.

My father was fired from his preacher job in the 1960s because he insisted that each of his congregations be racially integrated. He personally walked door to door in minority neighborhoods, seeking to connect with those that white Christianity often somehow doesn't see.

I will always admire the courage that took. He had young kids at home to feed and clothe, so this was a moral stance that cost him and his family personally.

Several times our family fell on hard times. This highly educated man took menial labor jobs - once even picking up trash by the side of the road for the county - so his eight kids would have food on the table. As an unashamed gay man I've seen a lot of the bad side of modern American Christianity. Literally my entire adult life. I saw Christians throw their gay sons out of the home when they came home to die in the 80s. I saw them refuse to claim the bodies of illness-ravaged sons, because of what the neighbors may say. I saw them tell tear-stained men waiting bedside in hospitals that they had to leave, because even though they had been lifelong partners of their sons and had cared for them through the ravages of an obscene illness they weren't 'family' legally. I still see Christians insist it's their right to fire us, to evict us, to deny us our family structures. My parents provided me an example of the good side of Christianity. I hope some day their example will be the norm.

O Death, where is thy sting?

My favorite photo of the two of them is on their wedding day. That's my father, in the passenger seat. My mom is there in the middle, movie-star-plus beautiful.

"You shall know them by their fruits"

No matter what anyone thinks of Christianity or any religion, these people (and their son) are good people doing what Jesus taught and living their best life. Not necessarily full of money and material goods but one of purpose and life that does not intentionally harm anyone else.

It was a nice elegy, but the son spent a wee bit too much time talking about himself. The dad sounds like a man well ahead of his time though. Hats off to him for the willingness to stand up in the face of adversity.
