OdradekRex: Time to make Election Day a federal holiday.

I keep saying we need to make Election Week a holiday. All states should have at least one week of early voting & employers should be required to provide all employees a day off of the employee's choosing during that week that they would not normally have off.

Otherwise all essential workers wouldn't get the day off, & as 2020 showed us, a large portion of the country is essential workers.

Sounds like congress really needs to hurry up with that voting rights act.

Too many people would still be stuck working. And even if you have the day off, some people can't physically take waiting in line for 8 hours.

Making early voting available for 1-2 weeks out from election day would fix a lot of access issues. No-excuse mail-in voting would be the best option, though.

The Republican Party wants to remain in power.

That's the argument.

The easier it is to vote, the better the Democratic Party tend to do-and vice versa.

It is not so much lower turn out but targeted voter restrictions in Democratic locations, making it even harder to vote.

It is very likely that a fairly large number of anti-Trump Republicans are what pushed Biden over the edge on the first vote, and that Trump's complaining and lawsuiting and whatnot hurt the the two Republican Senators in the second vote.  More people voted for Republicans than Democrats in both Senate races on the first vote.

Someone needs to give out food and water and test this law. If said person has no political affiliation clothing on then there is a chance to have it tossed. Bonus is have a few go to the opposing predominant precincts and see who takes them up on the offer. I bet everyone would.

I mean the other stuff is sorta too but it's the same old sh*t and TECHNICALLY they aren't denying people the vote. Just making it a PITA.

Correct. It's some of the GOP's most blatant voter suppression and they've already done it in numerous states prior to this year. There's really no way to pretend it's about protecting the legitimacy of the vote somehow like they do with their voter ID laws. It's just really farking obvious voter suppression. Yet GOP voters are fine with that as evidenced by their continued support for politicians doing their best to crush democracy.

What if the person you sold it to didn't have a penny, and you just gave them a line of credit and told them to venmo you the penny. Would that also be illegal since you didn't give it away?

This is absurd. I don't know how anyone can claim to live in a democracy and support this garbage.

It's simple. You can't wear campaign gear near the voting locations.  As such there no way for potential voters to know which party is being generous.  Republicans have no interest in being generous with no direct payoff. It then follows that the only people who would be giving out food and drinks at the polls would be Democrats. Therefore it must be outlawed.

Fair Fight and all the voter rights orgs active here have got to just assume this will pass and pursue remedies in court while trying to educate voters and drive turnout in spite of it. It sucks but that's the hand we're dealt and we've got to keep pushing regardless.

someonelse: I mean, banning food & drink is a dick move, but limiting hours and locations of drop boxes is a lot more harmful.

Exactly. We don't need food and water if we can easily vote early in-person and absentee. Making people send in copies of ID with the application and submission of absentee ballots is particularly heinous. Lots of elderly and disabled use absentee ballots and do not have printers at home. Even if you can afford a printer and paper, ink and toner are very expensive. If you want to help said people, traveling house-to-house with your scanner, computer and printer is very impractical.

OdradekRex: Time to make Election Day a federal holiday.

Can't Biden do that with a simple EO until they can work on the legislation. If I remember correctly Dotard made Christmas Eve a federal holiday by EO last year.

National holiday

Federal holiday
And therein lies the problem

Everybody who fought in WWI is gone, simply make Veteran's Day fall on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Honor veterans and make voting day a National Holiday in one fell swoop.

And give everybody bottled water.

What better way to honor our veterans than to make Veterans day our election day.  Honor our veterans by celebrating the democracy they served to protect and defend.

OdradekRex: Time to make Election Day a federal holiday.

One thing that was made pretty apparent this past election is something that we should have known all along.  Is that "Election Day", is simply the last day.  The deadline.  In many states we can vote some 30 days in advance of that.

Considering that to be the case, it should be really easy for anyone to find time to vote.  Just don't wait until the last day.

And here's the thing.  Many people, including myself, were not aware of how easy it is to vote in advance.  I mean, it's way easier than anyone thought.

Gee, I wonder why they've been so quiet about that for all this time.  Maybe if they made it a point to REALLY let people know all of their options for voting, they wouldn't all wait until the deadline.

I wish I'd thought of that...

I've been a veteran for a while now, Veteran's Day has never meant a damned thing, if it made it so more people could vote, that's a win. I understand why it was pegged for 11/11 but times change, that was 110 years ago.

They're trying to restrict that as well... They're reducing the number of days and hours you can vote early, moving early voting locations, limiting drop-off ballot locations for those who will be able to qualify for it going forward, everything. They're going nuts trying to make it as grueling of a process as possible.

I can see now the right nuts screaming how liberals want to break the law and all for illegal vote tampering if someone did get arrested for handing out water. No integrity from that side at all.

Pass the stimulus, then put everything else on hold an ram the Jon Lewis act through congress by any means necessary.

Nothing else is as important, not the minimum wage, not student loans, not healthcare.

None of that will EVER get done if the right is able to successfully steal the right to vote.

At this point they should ban lawn chairs too.  Anything to make voting as inconvenient and uncomfortable as possible.

andrewagill: OdradekRex: Time to make Election Day a federal holiday.

Also, federal workers would probably get time and a half working on a holiday. That would be great. No sarcasm. Should have been the same with census workers.

Ambivalence: Sounds like congress really needs to hurry up with that voting rights act.

But it isn't a budget issue, so we need Republicans or Manchin and Sinema to nuke the filibuster. But once legislation is only subject to 50 votes, then it can be repealed just as easily as it passed. I don't have a solution, just naming problems.

saturn badger: Original: Original Tweet:

DianneG: Georgia's GOP-controlled House just passed #HB531 by a 97-72 vote. Among other voting restrictions, HB531 would limit location & hours of drop boxes, reduce early weekend voting, prohibits giving food/drink to voters waiting in line. Bill goes to State Senate now.

Someone needs to give out food and water and test this law. If said person has no political affiliation clothing on then there is a chance to have it tossed. Bonus is have a few go to the opposing predominant precincts and see who takes them up on the offer. I bet everyone would.

Problem, in the Republican dominated district there won't be a line because they have a surplus of voting machines. The lines are in Democratic leaning districts.

phoenix352: Not that they have tried to come up with one, but how the hell are they trying to justify the prohibition of giving food and drinks to those in lines?

JFC these people are a holes

Simple enough. Those people waiting in line to vote are only there for the pizza. It's bribery, and it must not stand.
Transparently ridiculous, but who cares? Reasons.

The Democrats only won Georgia last time because they literally said "Vote for us and we will give you $2000".  If they break this promise, which is looking increasingly likely, the Republicans won't even need this legislation to take Georgia back.
