This is one of my favorite scenes, not just from Excalibur- of any film, period.

The opening credits, absolutely.

The rest, not so much.

At least half the cast was really good - Rorschach and The Comedien were perfect IMHO.

It's kind of a weird suggestion to stick close to the original source material since their isn't an original source.  Arthurian stories were written over centuries and in several languages, and they differ quite a bit from each other.  Even weirder is the criticism that the 2004 film wasn't close to "actual historical events."  We don't even know if King Arthur was a real person, let alone what he actually historically did.

Incorrigible Astronaut: Zack Snyder has made two movies that I really liked: Dawn of the Dead and 300.

Word. Dawn of the Dead was before he lost his mind with the over-stylized bullshiat. And there was Sarah Polly.

As for Hollywood messing up characters, I would add Lex Luthor and Two Face.

Exactly. Phil Dunphy as an over-sexed douchebag is great, too.

300 works well largely because Gerard Butler leans hard into his performance- I don't think it would've worked nearly as well without him, as evidenced by the awful sequel.

Well 300 was sort of supposed to be a music video/VFX student demo reel. That doesn't mean all his films had to be like that.

Um, including headline reference?

Monty Python is an exception to every rule. Including that one.

Added bonus. It would piss off the incels.

*tilts head*  Is it because all the female characters are stronger than the male ones?

Even in the original stories, it was Guinevere. Igraine, and Morgan who brought down the strongest kings and knights, so yeah.

Easiest role of his career. He just sat back and let the real Merlin do the scenes.

That man could chew scenery like he hadn't eaten in months but sweet Jesus he did it well! Just found out last week that he did an audiobook version of the Mary Stewart "Merlin" trilogy.

Or the fact that he and Helen Mirren despised each other. It really helped their performances.

King Arthur is a post roman character.  Getting the garb correct  is like 90% of the nerds' concern.  Everything else is gravy.

Personally, my favorite adaptation was a book by Robert Asprin where Arthur is a time traveling police detective quantum leaping into a man in the past to catch a modern day terrorist doing the same.

I think that was due more to the writer (James Gunn for the first, Kurt Johnstad for the second) and actors in both cases.
