This is a pretty well known sledding area. Accidents happen. Live life at your own risk.

Plenty more paralyzed or killed at the local ski resorts.

She used to wait on the front porch for him to arrive home from work to greet him with the biggest hug before he could even get in the house. Such a tragic end to their lives.

Dad sure was merciless. Always won at Mario Kart, even died first. I'm sure the dad's gonna say something like "Even in death, I win!" as he greets his kid in the afterlife.

That's  really sad. I'm shocked nothing like this happened to me or any of my friends on our unsupervised, semi-feral 80's childhoods. The worst was the wind being knocked out of us, lots of crotch injuries and borderline hypothermia. It makes me glad my 9 year old is risk averse.

When i was much younger, there was a former toboggan run, now fenced off, where anything went. I was there one fine winters day when a super long toboggan wth six souls aboard. It was icy and fast that morning. The toboggan flew down the hill, over the (icy) flats where things usually slow down, and launched off the six foot berm at the bottom. Toboggan flew probably ten or twelve feet in the air and crashed. Four broken legs, one broken arm, two broken backs, and a fractured skull. Sherriffs broke up the sledding party, rescue squad took a while triaging the injured parties, and i never sledded there again...

Second was a great hill that ended at the lake. Midwinter there was ice that went out 30 to 100 feet depending on conditions. I bailed off of my sled at 20 feet and my sled went off the ice and into the lake about 50 feet out. Found my sled 2 years later in spring when the lake was down a few feet... Rebuilt it and still have it 45 years later..

Good lord the 80s were a meat grinder for kids. Shot, run over. One winter school outing a kid was run over by a 50s style runner sled. Right over his neck.

The kid that got run over was an asshole, though, so no one really cared. The kid that ran him over is dead now. Some weird shiat he developed in the navy.

One time my younger brother and I were playing GoldenEye multiplayer and I started feeling really bad. So I gave him a +10 handicap, so he did 10 times the damage I did, and gave myself a -10 handicap so I did ten times less damage. And I still had to stand there while he shot me. And then he kept bragging about beating me. So I decided I wasn't going to play GoldenEye with him anymore.

So maybe use some judgement, or "personal responsibility", and don't go sledding into the trees.

It's not the entire world's responsibility to prevent you from getting yourself killed through pure stupidity.  If it was then we'd need a permanent naval blockade of the poles and an air force blockade of space.  Grow the fark up!

Usually more like rum, sodomy, and near-immunity to workplace safety law unless they want to comply.  Obvious safety stuff?  Sure, you'll see it in spades, so ships don't blow the fark up.  Nuke exposure?  Yeah they worry about that too.  Quieter, longer term killers in gear, spaces, and vehicles?  Fark it shiat's expensive to replace.

There are things you let kids win at and things you don't, also after they turn about 19 to 12 you stop giving them keep them in the game wins.

CSB: I witnessed a sledding accident in my early teenage years. Dad and his 2 small kids on a toboggan fly down whats basically an ice chute/bobsled run and can't stop. They are going fast enough to force their way underneath a chain link fence that was the only thing separating a children's playground from a 3 story vertical drop into a concrete storm water ravine.
They were badly hurt.
I ran to call the police. Knocked on the first door closest to the park. A mean old lady answered and I asked to use her phone to call 911. She said no.... I said really? And hesitated for a second while she replied "I don't know who you are or what you're trying to do". I ran off to the very next house and knocked and of farking course they let the panicked 13 year old boy use their phone to call 911.
Emergency response showed up and they are rescuing the family and a local news van shows up.
They interview me right in the mean old lady's front yard.
I'm recanting the chain of events and that old biatch is standing behind her glass storm door perfectly visible holding a cordless phone and rubbernecking.
Of course one detail in my series of events was described as I turned around and point directly at the lady " annnnd THAT LADY told me I I couldn't use her phone to call 911 so I went next door and..."
