Yeah.  What is the deal with that?  I doubt they've actually stripped the cameras.  Something with the transmission or reception gear?

Anyone find more details regarding the previous landing failure?  Something more detailed than 'heat issues'?

I did the day it opened.

No broadband options on my street.  (Broadband just skipped my two mile section of road.  Everything else in a 20 mile radius can get broadband, just not us.  Two different cable companies in 1.5 miles of my house and neither will come to me.  Well, the one that is .4 miles away will if I pay them 21,000 to pull the cable.  Fark that noise)

Yup. For a couple of reasons.
1) My parents who live in the boonies and exist on dial-up want nothing to do with it. Of course they said the same thing about PCs back in the mid 80s. I had to drag them kicking and screaming into the computer age.  Now they own 3 and love them. Figure I'm going to have to do the same here.
2) I hate cox internet.

FormlessOne: bud jones: anyone else pony up $99 for starlink pre-order?

Can't. It's not yet available in my area.

It's available in rural eastern Arizona. I just don't want to drop $500 on a receiver and modem. Not to mention $100 a month. Yikes. And no guarantee of good service. I'll let somebody else do the beta testing. I'm never an early adopter. I tend to save a lot of money that way.

__________

I take it from that statement that you have other internet options that are bearable?

Duopolies suck.  Monopolies suck worse.  Give me Tri-opolies or give me ^^Carrier Lost^^  (Oh, they do that all the time anyway.)

_________

Human presence disrupts astronomy in many ways.  Thus, we should get rid of all human presence?

We try to mitigate our human tools in such was as to keep them bearable for the rest of life, but requiring a few human individuals to go back to unneeded caves while the rest die in place is a bit of a stretch to make sure astronomy is unhindered in any way.

This type of internet (including competitors in the low-orbit field) may help hinder authoritarian regimes, indeed.  One of the first things that a competent fascist does when crushing a population is to cut off communications.  This opens up a new option that may be able to get around authoritarian cut-offs.

I doubt it.

What will happen is that places like Russia and China will embrace their own version of Starlink, and forbid the use of Starlink in their territory.   Either that, or will obviate the need for such a thing by running fiber to every single hovel in the territory.

Then, because they control the network, whether it be satellite or ground based, they'll simply continue monitoring and censoring like they always have.

Remember back when people thought that opening up China economically meant that they would eventually throw off the oppressive yoke of the Chinese Communist Party and fight for more human rights?   How did that work out?

A competent totalitarian government wouldn't allow unfettered access to the Internet, and because the thing radiates an RF signal, and a pretty strong one at that (6600 watts EIRP), it is something that could be easily located by even a modestly capable SIGINT aircraft.   So tracking down users would be a cake walk for the Sixth Directorate of the GRU and Spetzvyaz as well as the Third Department of the Joint Staff Department of the People's Liberation Army.
