The FAA has no sense of humor when it comes to plane crashes.  They get upset if you even keep, like, an arm that no one is using any more.  None.

Accidentally dropping something on the ground immediately terminates any legal claim you have to that item.

I learned this from my dog.

If a car runs off the road onto my property, do I get to keep the car?

Do you really need to contact a lawyer to figure this one out?

FTA ; A general precept of the law of lost property is that a finder of property acquires no rights in mislaid property, is entitled to possession of lost property against everyone except the true owner, and is entitled to keep abandoned property.

Well, it would seem that if you have rights against everyone but the true owner, and the true owner doesn't exist anymore - free arm!

Somewhat weirdly I can say with entire seriousness the law already covers that.  The arm's legal owner is the estate of the deceased.  Even the amendments have to bow to basic inheritance law.

/what I'm saying is you don't always have the right to spare arms

When I was a little kid, we were stationed at Offutt.  One of my friends had a B-47 drag chute land in his yard once.  He thought he had scored a great summer tent, but the APs came and made him give it back.

I think someone on Fark made a suggestion that the front cowling would be useful as a "cock ring", or whatever you kids call it nowadays.

Kinda small for a cock ring.

Ain't nobody got a chicken that big.

It does apply except to the actual owner. So your neighbor can't take it but United Air can. Even the precedent of calling dibs loses to the owner as does calling shotgun or licking it.
