It was the opposite for me when I went to Venice in 2016. I was at Piazza San Marco one evening and it was flooded from a high tide.

I always thought they were deeper than that.

I haven't seen a canal dry up that fast since Stormy Daniels saw Trump naked

I thought they had some huge flood gate built to prevent the high tides from coming in. Can't they do the same to keep a low tide from entirely going out?

I remember that took me forever to get lined up (did you have to build up speed coming around a corner or something?), so satisfying when everything clicked.

Venice is definitely in contention for my favorite city I've visited.  Rented an apartment there for 3-4 days (with AC!).  Shopped at the fish and the produce market.  It was fun to pretend to live there.

Once I'd seen the sights, I chose a direction away from the tourists and walked in it.  Found a nice quiet park, and an empty part of Venice that was very quaint.  I also took a ferry to one of the nearby islands for a coffee and another quiet walk.

The Doge's Palace has a nice armory (I'm a fan of the Venetian military hammer), and I think the mosaics of St. Marks make it the most beautiful church I've seen.

Motel Owner: Room 203. Very nice room, very nice. It's got air conditioning and you can smell the ocean.
Gloria: There's a view?
Motel Owner: No. There's a smell. At low tide.

Who the hell is BlackBerry the Guy? Is that a new rapper?

Also, I expected this article to be about maintenance being performed at the casino in Vegas. Not the actual city.

There was a really good BBC documentary, Italy's Invisible Cities, a few years back. Based on 3D scans of Naples, Florence and Venice, showing all kinds of neat stuff like the hidden passages in the Doge's palace.

Don't know if it was a co-production, but googling suggests it may have been on PBS at some point. Definitely worth a watch if you can find it.

Yeah, Venice has mostly been having increasingly bad flooding problems for decades, so this is pretty freaky.  Bet the high tide was bad.

The Venetian canals are like any urban road system; some are avenues, some are alleys.

/Cool place to wander around and get lost
//One day in Venice is usually enough
///It's a lot of walking. No cars, no bikes.

There is a tourist drinking wine(?) in that scene who does a double take or a spit take when he sees the gondola driving across the square. That same guy did the same bit in three consecutive Bond movies, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, and For Your Eyes Only.
