Yeah what we really need now is the beta version of an autonomous kill-bot in our police forces. What could possibly go wrong?

Add Alexa software and a couple of 20mpx pinhole cams and you can get a "bot on the street" view of any altercation you send the thing into.

Probable deployments would be bomb squads (which would be a big upgrade) and certain specialized SWAT groups. Boston Dynamic is only going to improve on the design over time.

How is that substantially different / more extensive than current surveillance capabilities? How does that infringe on an area where you have a legal expectation of privacy?

If they're going to put in the headline, why can't they explain or support the reported claim? The best they do is quote AOC dropping the "robotic surveillance ground drone" scare-term, then immediately pivoting to "we should be buying other stuff instead."

This is bordering on clickbaiting bullshiat.

I really do think this is a dumb hill for AOC to die on, and one of those things that bothers me about her when she just figures out how she can tie a news item to an issue.

1. Look, it keeps cops or others out of situations where they may escalate it or get hurt. Its just so happens people caught it on camera this time. That keeps people from getting hurt, saves the city money, etc. One of the biggest reasons i bought a farking drone is so i don't have to drag the ladder out as much.

This thing has been used successfully in the past with positive results.

2. NYC is already wired up the wazzoo with cameras, sensors, you name it. Not quite london levels on the public front, but EVERY farking building in the city has a camera outside, all over the inside, etc. The city has plenty of its own shiat as well.

3. Call me when they strap a gun to it, give it autonomous control, or just have them roving the streets in packs. Then maybe we can talk. For now, its a bomb robot that can do stairs a bit better.

That's the problem.

The city paid public services money for it instead of something not from a dystopian wank fantasy.

The actual cost is irrelevant.  A penny is infinitely too expensive morally, till the rest of society is fixed.

We could always try helping people who need help instead of buying new toys for cops.

2021-02-28 4:19:34 PM
I mean the hysterical part about this whole thing is how it played out:

NYPD: Hey, we are listening, look at how we used this new tool so we didn't have to send officers in and potentially escalate the situation. Its not very expensive, gives us some abilities that don't put officers in harms way, allows us to open up lines of communication so we can de-escalate stuff, and its kind of neat and cute

People that asked the NYPD to solve those issues: YOU ARE SENDING KILLER ROBOTS AFTER THE POOR

NYPD: This is why we beat you

Yes, actually.  That would be ideal because defunding the police is also on the docket. $50M, $50k, $0.50  doesn't matter. That robot money could be better spent elsewhere and other groups could use a robot better if it were even free.

We have a barricaded suspect. Send in a social worker, representatives of all major faiths, translators for all spoken languages just in case the rabbi doesn't speak Swahili, and that is what we are up against, and also we have backup teams of varying degrees of personal identity standing by.

Lot of people to fit in a pre-war hallway.

Or we send in the farking robot dog and figure it out with the right folks over zoom.

NYC has been a part of my life my entire life. I worked in it for 10+ years, and most of the work i do today still involves it and me being in it on a regular basis. I spend my free time there every chance i get (I was there yesterday). I lived in it for a good while, and honestly don't think i have lived anywhere where it wasn't out of my eyesight. I know its not the same thing as living in the bronx or some shiat for 40 years, but its dear to my heart.

I also remember the city in the late 80s and 90s personally.

2021-02-28 6:40:09 PM
Ans to be extra clear, while i don't always agree with AOC, i think its important to have someone pushing boundaries, even if i don't agree with them, because it makes the rest of us think. And even after thinking if i still don't agree, its a good thing, and i appreciate that.

But this is something she needs to come back on and say, "After looking at it further, i was wrong in my initial reaction. Use of technology of this type is something we should be wary of, but this is a good use and really what we are asking for"

There is nothing wrong with that. It elevates her in my mind if she does that. We can all learn, grow, admit when we are wrong, all make mistakes, and that is what she is asking us to do.

The Bronx is not Manhattan. It's not really like the other boroughs. I saw somebody fall and hit their head, and when I said I'd run the short distance to the firehouse to get someone to look at her some cops offered to help instead (you can't really go sprinting past some cops when they ask what's wrong), and she drove off bleeding into her face when she saw who was coming rather than talk to them. People already do not trust the cops here, and that's leaving aside how much other places need funding here.

I think what the NYPD needs to do is team up with someone with a good voice for the thing.....

Think about it.....this thing rolls in and, in Morgan Freeman's Voice....

"Hello.....I know things are tense right now, but i'm here to help you out of it. We don't want to see anyone get hurt. I want to have your trust....but i know i need to earn it.....so let me tell you a story...."

And then, i don't know, you play a summary of shawshank or something. Whatever. I think it would make everyone cool off a bit if a robot dog voiced by morgan freeman rolled up on your crazy ass situation.

Or, as everyone else called him, "the ex military sniper who had already killed 5 cops among 16 total victims, who had holed up in a secure elevated position, was continuing to kill, and taunted cops during the 2+ hour standoff and negotiation."

"Officers opened negotiations for surrender but Johnson said he would speak to black police officers only. Johnson stated that he had acted alone and was not part of any group. According to Chief Brown, Johnson appeared delusional during his standoff; 'We had negotiated with him for about two hours, and he just basically lied to us, playing games, laughing at us, singing, asking how many did he get and that he wanted to kill some more.'"

But you go ahead and just see him as a skin color. That's what MLK Jr. would have wanted.

You're talking about that particular use, and I'm talking about future uses. No one trusts them anymore in the Bronx especially.

The alternative was a dude in serious body armor with a big gun kicking in a door.

No matter what side i'm on, i'll take the robot packing a camera as the alternative.

You seem to trust them to keep it to only that scenario. I honestly hope you're right.

I get sending in robots in hostage situations, but nobody trusts the NYPD not to abuse whatever power they're given, especially here.

I agree. The NYPD has miles upon miles to go to build trust.

WHICH IS WHY THEY SENT IN A farkING ROBOT.

You're talking about that particular use, and I'm talking about future uses. No one trusts them anymore in the Bronx especially.

Also we are debating current use. I don't want a bunch of Ed-209s patrolling NYC. But i do support anything we can do to de-escalate situations between the police and others.

Like i said, if this thing kicked in the door with a gun on its back, yeah, lets have a conversation. It basically pulled a stick its head in, "everything cool in here? Ok...cool" move.

More importantly its been used before, less publicized to positive effect. Its the NYPD. You don't think there is someone on staff that decides when they back something? They saw good results with it, someone assumed here is how we can "unveil" it in a positive manner and have data to back it up, and the very people calling for stuff like this they were trying to make good with threw it under the bus.

And if they move out of that, i'd be right there with you.

You want to build trust, both sides have to stick a had out, and well, TRUST, the other side. Even if you believe you are right and had the previous high ground.

What exactly do you think they're going to do with a robot dog that they aren't already doing with a dozen other different things?  Do you think they're going to have a robot dog patrol or something?  Weaponize the robot dog and have bees shoot out of its mouth?  If this was some kind of flying drone, I'd be a little more concerned.  I just cant think of anything more they would do with this robot dog that they aren't already doing.

Jeebus Saves: Cops have cameras on every street corner, GPS trackers, stingers to steal your cell info, automatic license plate readers to keep track of every car they see... but this robot dog raises privacy concerns.  Horse is out of the barn, people.

The Deep State is using vaccines to track you so the RoboDog can find you!1!!

Lets see. Off the top of my head I can think of one standoff where they equipped a robot with a shotgun-like explosive charge and told the guy it was delivering a phone so he could chat with the cops, rigged to blow the guy away when he tried to take the phone, and one where they rigged the robot to to place a bomb on the other side of a wall from a holed up suspect and blew him to bits through the wall while the cops talked to him.

Military has rules against arming robots.
Cops don't, so predictably they did it immediately, in some departments literally the first time they deployed them.

So what you're saying is that they already have robots and haven't provided an example of doing something new and different with this robot that they aren't already doing.
