My biggest concern is that it gets all the Pookas.

Robodog will need a police escort at all times or Jimmy Hoffa will adopt it.

That's not a robot dog, that's a robot pig.

Is the best response to "the police get too much funding" really to buy a robot dog?

Yeah what we really need now is the beta version of an autonomous kill-bot in our police forces. What could possibly go wrong?

We've always had those. Now we just have one with two extra legs.

So, TFA handwaves and fearmongers about how this robot is somehow a threat to personal privacy, but never really bothers to elaborate on how?

Sounds about right for journalism today.

Add Alexa software and a couple of 20mpx pinhole cams and you can get a "bot on the street" view of any altercation you send the thing into.

Probable deployments would be bomb squads (which would be a big upgrade) and certain specialized SWAT groups. Boston Dynamic is only going to improve on the design over time.

How is that substantially different / more extensive than current surveillance capabilities? How does that infringe on an area where you have a legal expectation of privacy?

If they're going to put in the headline, why can't they explain or support the reported claim? The best they do is quote AOC dropping the "robotic surveillance ground drone" scare-term, then immediately pivoting to "we should be buying other stuff instead."

This is bordering on clickbaiting bullshiat.

What kind of dumbshiat system would rather spend the money on policing than upfront on education and social justice. Seems kinda backwards.

Actually, based on past history I'm kind of shocked the police haven't already taken care of it for us.

Pffft. Sure, quad 'Mechs can move laterally and mule kicks, but given the frequency or arm and leg hits they are prone to loss of movement points. Plus, no torso twist!

I really do think this is a dumb hill for AOC to die on, and one of those things that bothers me about her when she just figures out how she can tie a news item to an issue.

1. Look, it keeps cops or others out of situations where they may escalate it or get hurt. Its just so happens people caught it on camera this time. That keeps people from getting hurt, saves the city money, etc. One of the biggest reasons i bought a farking drone is so i don't have to drag the ladder out as much.

This thing has been used successfully in the past with positive results.

2. NYC is already wired up the wazzoo with cameras, sensors, you name it. Not quite london levels on the public front, but EVERY farking building in the city has a camera outside, all over the inside, etc. The city has plenty of its own shiat as well.

3. Call me when they strap a gun to it, give it autonomous control, or just have them roving the streets in packs. Then maybe we can talk. For now, its a bomb robot that can do stairs a bit better.

It was 50k.

Far less than the cost of a cop salary, let alone a cop or other person being injured and suing the city.

Also it was paid for with city money.
