I heard that while charismatic the calm, gentle speech and personality was mostly an act.

I mean, the guy was in the military for 20 years, and a drill sergeant at one point.

In Bob Ross's voice: "Hello recruits, thank you so much for joining me in this war today. To the left is the mess hall, I really like that place. Oh, and look up, isn't the sky a nice shade of blue? And those puffy little clouds just sort of hang there don't they? It makes me feel really calm being here. Lets get you some some happy little rifles now... "

There's a very old stand up routine from MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour that I cannot find anywhere where the comic does Bob Ross having a Nam flashback, I remember finding it hilarious at the time but it's been 30ish years so I have no idea if it holds up. I can't remember the name of the comic either.

Starts with Bob doing his normal painting stuff, happy bush here, then a few happy trees. Now we have a nice little jungle...a jungle, I was in the jungle once . I was in Nam.  Then he starts getting aggressive adding VC snipers and stuff hiding behind the trees. Probably has some slurs for the Vietnamese that wouldn't fly by today's standards. It was late 80's or early 90's, I wish it existed somewhere.

I watch an two or three episodes when I'm doing my stretching in the evenings.

I was cynical about it when I realized his show is at its core an ad for his painting supply and teaching company.

That lasted about 2 minutes.  I've had countless people try to sell me worse shiat with worse, more obnoxious methods my whole life.  I just have to give the man credit for how he did it.

The only part that sucks is when you fall asleep to it at night AND THEN THE END THEME MUSIC PLAYS.

I don't know if this is the exact clip I was thinking of but it's definitely the right routine.  Thank you for scratching this old itch.

And, as a first sergeant in the Air Force, Ross' job was to, well, be mean. "I was the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work," he said. "The job requires you to be a mean, tough person. And I was fed up with it. I promised myself that if I ever got away from it, it wasn't going to be that way any more."

So when he retired in 1981, after 20 years in the military, he vowed never to scream again. Instead, he began teaching art for a national art-supply company. The oft-mimicked style began to form.

I remember something about white phosphorous, too, but yep!  That's the skit!

I could have sworn that I'd seen it as a Nick At Nite bumper.
